World exhibitions have been widely acknowledged as important sources for understanding the development of the modern consumer and urbanized society, yet whilst the function and purpose of architecture at these major events has been well-studied, the place of food has received very little attention. John Glenn Dead At 95: He Served His Country In War And In Space

John Glenn, an astronaut, senator and old-fashioned American hero, died Thursday at the age of 95, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Glenn was the last survivor of the Mercury 7, selected in 1959 as NASA’s first group of astronauts. He became the first American to orbit the Earth on Feb. 20, 1962. It was a solo flight, not everything went as planned in space, and Glenn personified cool under pressure.

Those nerves had earlier served him well as a much-decorated veteran of two wars and a military test pilot ― and perhaps they came in handy later in his 24 years in the U.S. Senate representing his native state of Ohio.

He was born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio, to Clara and John Herschel Glenn Sr. The family moved to nearby New Concord when he was two, where his father opened a plumbing business. Glenn later wrote, “A boy could not have had a more idyllic early childhood than I did.”

He attended Muskingum College to study engineering, but dropped out to enlist in the Navy’s aviation program after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. “I knew my responsibility,” he later said, “and I thought it was important to get going.”

In World War II, Glenn flew 59 combat missions in the South Pacific as a Marine aviator. He flew a further 90 combat missions during the Korean War. For his valor, he earned numerous awards and decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross six times.

His aircraft was hit by enemy fire on five different occasions, yet he escaped serious injury. A 1962 Life magazine spread noted that Glenn once returned from a mission in Korea with 375 holes in his plane. Crew members nicknamed the aircraft “the flying doily.”

Before missions, he shared an inside joke with his wife Annie, assuring her that he was just going to the corner store to get a pack of gum, to which she would reply, “Don’t be long.” Years later, just before his solo spaceflight, he gave her a present, a pack of gum, which she carried in a pocket next to her heart until he returned safely.

The Glenns were childhood sweethearts who had married in 1943. He would later remark that her decades-long struggle with — and ultimate triumph over — a severe stutter out-shined his own accomplishments.

“I saw Annie’s perseverance and strength through the years and it just made me admire her and love her even more,” he wrote. “I don’t know if I would have had the courage.”

After the Korean War, Glenn joined the Naval Air Test Center, where he worked as a test pilot. In 1957, he piloted an F8UI Crusader from Los Angeles to New York in just under three and a half hours. That transcontinental flight, dubbed “Project Bullet,” was the first to average supersonic speed.

His most famous accomplishment, however, came when he was launched into space in February 1962 in a tiny Mercury capsule atop an Atlas rocket.

In the span of four hours and 55 minutes, Glenn orbited the Earth three times aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft, at a maximum altitude of around 162 miles and an orbital velocity of nearly 17,500 miles per hour.

Though his heart rate monitor showed a pulse of between 60 and 80 beats per minute while awaiting liftoff — “closer to bored than apprehensive,” wrote Columbus Monthly in 1998 — Glenn was well aware of the mission’s dangers. Several of the prior unmanned test launches had ended catastrophically, and his own mission had been called off 10 times in the previous four months.

He later joked, “I felt exactly how you would feel if you were getting ready to launch and knew you were sitting on top of 2 million parts — all built by the lowest bidder on a government contract.”

The flight wasn’t without its terrifying moments. At the end of his first orbit, a jet clogged and pitched the capsule 20 degrees to the right. Glenn had to abandon the automatic control system in favor of manual “fly by wire” controls for much of the remaining mission.

During his second orbit, a warning indicated that the spacecraft’s heat shield — critical to keep it from burning up on re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere — might have come loose.

NASA instructed Glenn not to jettison a set of retro-rockets after firing them to slow his re-entry, hoping they would help hold the heat shield in place.

“There were flaming chunks of the retro-pack burning off and coming back by the window,” Glenn recalled. “I didn’t know for sure whether it was the retro-pack or the heat shield, but there wasn’t anything I could do about it either way, except just keep trying to work and keep the spacecraft on its actual best attitude coming back in.”

The shield held and he splashed down 800 miles southeast of Florida, where the USS Noa picked him up 21 minutes later.

Celebrity greeted him on his return to Earth. Not only had Glenn’s flight advanced science; it boosted the spirits of Cold War America. The Soviets had beaten the U.S. into space in both manned and unmanned spacecraft, and Glenn’s flight marked an American comeback.

“We hadn’t really thought that any nation could even touch us technically,” Glenn told ABC News in 1998, recalling the attitude at the time. “And all at once, here was this bunch of Soviets over there, for heaven’s sake, outdoing the United States of America in technical and scientific things.”

Glenn received a ticker-tape parade in New York and met President John F. Kennedy in the White House.

Then he returned to NASA and awaited another mission — one that wouldn’t come for several more decades. Unbeknownst to the astronaut, Kennedy viewed him as such a political asset and national symbol that he had prohibited NASA from sending Glenn back into space, worried he might lose his life.

In 1964, Glenn left NASA to run for the U.S. Senate. Within weeks, a fall on his head left him hospitalized for nine months, scrapping his campaign plans.

But he didn’t give up on political life. He had developed a personal friendship with the Kennedy family. In 1968, when a gunman left Bobby Kennedy mortally wounded, his wife, Ethel, turned to the Glenns to take the Kennedy children away and look after them. And it was John Glenn who had to tell those children that their father had died. It was, he said, “the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life.”

Glenn ran for Senate again in 1970, losing in the Democratic primary to Howard Metzenbaum, and then tried once more in 1974. His third bid was successful. He would serve four terms in the Senate until his retirement in 1999.

As a senator, Glenn helped author the 1978 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Act and served on the Foreign Relations Committee, the Armed Services Committee and the Special Committee on Aging. He chaired the Governmental Affairs Committee from 1978 to 1995, where he pushed to increase government accountability. He also made an unsuccessful run for the White House in the 1984 election cycle.

In 1989, Glenn found himself embroiled in a growing scandal along with four other senators who had received donations from a wealthy banker named Charles Keating Jr. Keating had defrauded investors in his Lincoln Savings and Loan Association of more than $ 250 million. U.S. taxpayers ended up on the hook for $ 3.4 billion to cover the S&L’s losses, reports The Economist. But as regulators closed in on him, Keating called upon the senators he’d donated to — later dubbed the “Keating Five” — for help stalling the investigation.

A 1991 inquiry by the Senate Ethics Committee cleared Glenn of impropriety, though it concluded he had exercised “poor judgment.” Ohio voters, apparently undeterred by the scandal, re-elected him to the Senate in 1992 for his fourth term.

Throughout the years, Glenn longed to return to space.

The opportunity finally came on Oct. 29, 1998, nearly four decades after his first launch, when Glenn strapped in aboard the space shuttle Discovery. At age 77, he was the oldest person to fly in space. Over the course of the shuttle’s nine-day mission, Glenn helped scientists peek into the aging process and the effects of spaceflight on the human body.

Unlike his solitary first mission, this time around Glenn was joined by an entire crew of other astronauts. His descent back to Earth was likely more enjoyable as well. Aboard the shuttle, the elder astronaut had to withstand a G-force of 3 on re-entry, compared to the 6 Gs he experienced on Friendship 7.

In retirement, Glenn remained a vocal supporter of space exploration in general and NASA in particular. On the 50th anniversary of his historic flight, he reflected in a 2012 interview with The Associated Press that he’d been “very fortunate to have a lot of great experiences in my life.”

His one major regret, he said, was not having personally made it to the Moon. That accomplishment went to another man from Ohio, Neil Armstrong.

Armstrong responded by calling Glenn’s original flight “the most significant of all the space anniversaries.”

“John Glenn deserves all the honors that his country can bestow,” Armstrong added. “He is an American patriot.”

What I Wish I Had Known In My Twenties

One time when I was twenty-five, I went shopping for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. We had been together for three years, and my dad kept asking when I would marry her. My friends kept asking. Her friends kept asking. Her dad kept asking her and she would tell me.

We were living together. And I liked her. Maybe I loved her.

But I started to shiver when I was looking at rings in the store. My friend who I was with took one look at me and quoted a lyric from an MC 900 Ft Jesus song: “Something’s gonna happen, and it’s probably not good.”

So I didn’t buy the ring. We didn’t get married. She moved out. We moved to different cities. I called her once a few years later, but now she’s not even on Facebook, and we haven’t talked since.

That sums up the twenties – everything you think is important and meaningful has absolutely no bearing on your future life.

I loved her. I had a job. I was writing novels. I had friends. I was a computer programmer.

Now, none of the above is true. (Oh, I have friends. Just different friends – 100% different).

And everything in my thirties – nothing is true anymore (except I have two kids still. Although now they are not babies. Now they are smarter than me).

I’m forty-eight now.

My most recent career change occurred when I was forty-seven. Before that, I started writing seriously (I wrote five very unserious books in my thirties) when I was forty-two.

In my twenties and thirties, my average weight was about 155 – 170. Now it’s 140. I write every day. I don’t obsess about money all day long. And I make bad decisions all day long – just like I did in my twenties.

The main skill I got between my twenties and now is that I bounce back from bad things faster.

I was very successful in my late twenties. And then a total failure after. Then very successful. And so on.

So that didn’t change. Only my ability to bounce back from really bad things. Horrible things. Things you wouldn’t want to wish on anyone, and yet they happen, in some form or other, to everyone.

So the only thing I can with full integrity say I wish I had known: nothing at all matters. Oh, and since nothing matters, once you realize that, you’ll start to bounce back faster.

And since nothing matters, you might as well be kind to people as much as possible. We can all laugh at the same joke at the end of this very long day.

U.S. Life Expectancy Falls As More People Die From Illnesses

Rising mortality from a variety of illnesses caused life expectancy for Americans to drop in 2015 for the first in more than two decades, according to a National Center For Health Statistics study released Thursday.

The drop of 0.1 percent was small ― life expectancy at birth was 78.8 years in 2015, compared with 78.9 years in 2014. But it reverses a long trend, and the factors that led to it are worth looking at.

Diseases caused more deaths in 2015 than they did the year before. Age-adjusted death rates increased overall by 1.2 percent, from 724.6 deaths per 100,000 standard population in 2014 to 733.1 in 2015. Death rates went up for eight of the 10 leading causes of death, including heart disease, chronic lower respiratory diseases, unintentional injuries, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, kidney disease and suicide. The rate decreased for cancer, according to the study.

The drop in life expectancy is troubling, some experts said, because there had been an expectation that the measure would steadily go up in Western societies. The last U.S. decline was in 1993, according to the World Bank. 

“That’s our idea of what it means to be in an advanced society,” Jarron Saint Onge, assistant professor at Kansas University’s Department of Sociology and Health Policy and Management, told The Huffington Post. “Especially as we have more capacity to control lifestyle diseases.”

Higher death rates are most prevalent, Saint Onge noted, in poorer communities. “It has to do with smoking, obesity, lack of quality diets and exercise, which are really responses to poverty,” he said.

Obesity, for example, is associated with diabetes, heart disease and stroke ― all of which caused more deaths last year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“There’s still clearly a lot of work that needs to be done,” Saint Onge added. “A lot are things we can control.”

The death rate increased among non-Hispanic white males, non-Hispanic white females, and non-Hispanic black males, the study found.

The study’s authors said they were baffled by the results.

“This is unusual, and we don’t know what happened,” Jiaquan Xu, an epidemiologist and lead author of the study, told The Washington Post. “So many leading causes of death increased.”

Globally, life expectancy is 71.4, an increase of five years since 2000, according to the World Health Organization. Global life expectancy dropped in the 1990s due to AIDS in parts of Africa.

A Climate Denier And Barbara Boxer Prove Americans Don’t Have To Hate

WASHINGTON ― Retiring Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and the ideologically opposite Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) have become known as an “odd couple” for their work together on Capitol Hill.

But in an emotional send-off address for Boxer on the Senate floor Wednesday, they went beyond that, offering an example that America could sorely use these days ― that of two people who are vehemently opposed to each other’s beliefs, yet still work together.

And more importantly, love each other.

“There are no two people in this body who are further apart from each other than Barbara Boxer and Jim Inhofe, and yet we have something beautiful,” Inhofe told Boxer after she wrapped up her traditional farewell address. 

Inhofe, who infamously brought a snowball to the Senate floor in an attempt to disprove climate change, is the chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee. Boxer, who has a perfect score from the League of Conservation Voters, is the top Democrat on the committee.

Yet they’ve managed to pass major legislation together for 12 years.

“I disagree with you ― with Senator Boxer ― on a lot of the regulations, and I’ve told her many times that she has every right to be wrong,” Inhofe said, switching between the formal and informal address because Senate rules say they’re not supposed to address one another directly.

“But you know, on the things that are really important, we did manage to get things together,” Inhofe added. “You know, there’s an awful lot of hate around here, around this place, and it’s so unnecessary.”

“You can disagree with someone, and love ‘em anyway,” he said, before pointedly dispensing with the formal address again. “Confession’s good for the soul, Barbara, but I want you to know, I’m truly going to miss you around here.”

According to Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers and the ten-thousand-hour rule of “deliberate practice,” which asserts that to become a world-class expert in any field, a person must practice their skill or trade for ten thousand hours. Gladwell believed that by reaching 10,000 hours (that’s about 90 minutes per day for 20 years) of practice you can become an outlier – the “Tipping-Point” of greatness.

But Gladwell’s ten-thousand-hour rule offers a greater prospect of deciphering the faux from the real deal.

Let’s be honest, for most folk winning a congressional race is near on impossible. The odds are stacked high. To succeed, Jenn would need media coverage, infrastructure and money. It takes years to build all three components, and Jenn has none. Although principled, articulate and passionate, her feelings of self-worth are now at ground zero.

Running for Congress is Jenn’s go-to story, how she defines her world. But, in truth, she has no resources or support. She has moderate experience and no plans. “If you can’t link the dots,” I told her, “Your approach will always let you down.”

She felt like she had failed. But in hindsight, she hadn’t failed at all; she was just beginning.

I had spent a good 30 minutes listening to Jenn. She must have mentioned grassroots at least seven times. There is always a clue if you listen to a person long enough. I let her know that.

My thought was to open more of a dialogue about her interest in grassroots work.

Her eyes lit up as she rambled excitingly about working as an activist. A grassroots activist. Her inspiration was back. She felt energized.

Did she want to work for an organization to help women, or apply for a grassroots internship? “Oh,” she said, “So many thoughts, so many decisions – I can’t wait to make them all.”

She smiled, and with that I knew she was well on her way towards her heart dream. And who knows, she may become a congressional winner after all.

David Petraeus’ Comeback Highlights The Sexist Double-Standard We Can’t Escape

As David Petraeus lobbies for a position in President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet, poised for a near total reputation rehabilitation, his counterpart in scandal, Paula Broadwell, remains in limbo.

The Army is still deciding whether or not to exact further punishment upon Broadwell, currently a reserve major, an official confirmed to The Huffington Post, citing a detailed article in The Hill.

The clear difference in their situations is just the latest shameful chapter in the Petraeus scandal, at every turn a case study in the ways women and men are treated differently in the media and in culture ― as well as by the incoming Trump administration.

As is now widely known, Petraeus shared highly classified information with Broadwell while he was running the CIA ― even the names of undercover agents. It was 2011, she was writing a book about him as part of her doctoral work at Harvard and the two, both married, were having an affair. Broadwell was an Army reserve major and an intelligence officer.

The Army quickly demoted Broadwell, rescinding a promotion to Lt. Colonel and taking away her security clearance, but has so far declined to accept the resignation she offered up this summer. The FBI did not charge her; Broadwell’s lawyer argued that she was protected because she viewed the secret information while working in the role of an author/journalist. (The classified bits never made it into the book.)

It was a pathetic biblical storyline in which men are innocents in the garden and devilish women are everywhere, dangling forbidden apples in their faces.

Petraeus apologized publicly, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified information, paid $ 100,000 and received two years of probation. He’s about halfway through it now.

But unlike Broadwell, Petraeus gets to keep his rank ― and the $ 220,000 annual pension that comes with it. (He was running the CIA and retired from the military when all this went down.)

Earlier this year, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said his department would not demote Petraeus. This move came after Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) both spoke up in Petraeus’ defense.

While some senators said they’d have a difficult time approving Petraeus for an administration position ― he’s just one of many contestants in Trump’s “Apprentice: Cabinet Edition” ― McCain and Graham have publicly said he’d be a great pick. So, although he’d have to let his probation officer know about any Cabinet appointment, the general is moving on.

Neither senator responded to a request for comment from The Huffington Post on Broadwell’s situation. 

The military, meanwhile, is weighing further consequences for Broadwell ― specifically for her role in mishandling classified information and for sending threatening emails to a friend of Petraeus in 2012, right before the scandal broke. 

The official would not say what kinds of actions the military is considering, but defended the differential treatment by saying that the FBI had already exacted its punishment on Petraeus, but Broadwell hasn’t been punished. (While it’s true that the FBI did not charge Broadwell, recall that she has lost her rank and security clearance and isn’t being allowed to retire.)

It’s hard to begrudge Petraeus his second act; he’s a widely respected general with a long and storied history.

But his stellar character and background has been noted throughout the scandal. Broadwell, meanwhile, has been characterized as a “mistress,” a demeaning word for which there is no male equivalent. She’s been accused of bringing a man down and destroying his career because he was forced to give in to temptation; her physical appearance was detailed and dissected.

I’d consider accepting Ambassador-at-large for Global Women’s Equality if asked.
Paula Broadwell

Broadwell has degrees from several prestigious universities and a stellar career history of her own. Yet she has had trouble getting work because of this scandal, The New York Times reported earlier this year.

As if to reinforce this cruel double standard, the Times placed its lengthy and substantive profile on Broadwell in the paper’s Style section, which often features stories on notable women that have little to do with fashion.

Imagine a profile of Petraeus there.

Undaunted, Broadwell has founded a nonprofit, Think Broader. Its mission is to highlight sexual discrimination in the media ― dropping the use of “mistress,” for example ― and to share data on how many male versus female experts reporters cite. Recently, the group teamed up with Sheryl Sandberg’s women’s nonprofit Lean In to produce a video drawing more attention to women in the military. 

Broadwell declined to publicly discuss her current situation with HuffPost, citing its ongoing nature. But with Petraeus so often in the news lately, she did tweet about it.

Since everyone is asking, I’d consider accepting Ambassador-at-large for Global Women’s Equality if asked,” she wrote, alongside an image that said “gender equality.”

In other words, if he can return to public service, so can I. 

Of course, Petraeus has had more luck in the job market; he is a partner at private equity firm KKR and advises the White House.

“Five years ago, I made a serious mistake. I acknowledged it, I apologized for it, I paid a very heavy price for it, and I’ve learned from it,” Petraeus said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” a TV appearance widely construed as his effort to convince Trump to give him the State role.

Several people have already pointed out that Trump is considering a top job for a man who knowingly shared classified information after spending months calling his opponent Hillary Clinton “crooked” for mishandling classified information

It’s unsurprising that Trump would hold a man and a woman to different standards, exhibiting more empathy for Petraeus. It may be that Trump thinks men are simply better than women.

“Donald [Trump] told me that he thought that men were better than women— especially in this field — but that a good woman was better than ten good men,” Barbara Res, who worked as an executive in the Trump organization for 12 years, told Frontline. “I think he believed that women had to prove themselves more than men, so a good woman would work harder.”

We all expect this from Trump, but he’s hardly the only one holding men and women to different standards. Broadly speaking, men get more leeway to screw up ― particularly if the screwing up involves an indiscretion with a woman.

Obviously, Trump’s OK with that. His inner circle is essentially the Third Wives Club ― Steve Bannon, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani. These guys have had less-than pristine romantic lives, to say the least. And that’s fine.

The problem is when the rules are different for women.

ISIS in their sub-human brutality have blown up and damaged many parts of the almost 5000-year-old gem of antiquity, The City of Nineveh in Iraq. “Issa and I met in a brothel-cum-caff of Mosul, northern Iraq. One of those sleazy joints of Araby, serving tepid beer, soft drinks, strong coffee and tea spiced with the lure of belly-dancers going through copulatory undulations to the deafening staccato of flute, drum and wild ululation of tumescent lechers. His features were striking, and I felt I ‘recognised’ him from friezes in the B.M. and Bagdad Museum. “Are you Assyrian?”, I ventured. “Yes”, he smiled broadly. Soon we were chatting away like old friends. I like his easy banter. Issa (which means Jesus in Arabic – most Assyrians are Christians now) was a young railway engineer, with a passionate interest in Assyriology. The legendary courage and martial temper of Assyrians have survived to this day. When Iraq was a British Protectorate, many Assyrians served in the Imperial army. And when in 1941 Nazis instigated an anti-British uprising, a detachment of 600 Assyrians held out the British airbase at Habbaniyeh against assaults of the Iraqi army until relief was sent by the British.

The following day Issa and I walked across the bridge over the Tigris and into the desert to the ruins of Nineveh, the last Assyrian capital. Hardly anything survives there for the eye to fix on and set imagination aflame. An area of mounds and ridges, occasionally punctured by remains of a brick wall. But Issa’s instinctive feel for the place and evocative powers were uncanny. He guided me with the assurance, the quiet pride of a lord taking a guest over his domain. Weaving history, anecdotes, stories of campaigns and intrigue with description of temples, palaces, broad avenues, of regal circumstance. He led the way to Kuyunjik, the highest mound in the northern part of the city, where Sennacherib had built his ‘Palace without Rival’. Raised on a solid platform, it contained large courtyards and hundreds of rooms, adorned with friezes and brilliantly painted. Cedar beams supported ceilings, monumental doorways built in cypress-wood and other odoriferous timber, brought from four quarters of the far-flung empire, led from one chamber to the next. Gateways guarded by huge stone-carved ‘Lamassu’, the winged human-headed bulls. Graceful copper pillars resting on bronze lions. Invincible they marched on incessant campaigns, against Cimmerians, Scythians, Hittites, Phrygians, Aramaeans, the Jews before the walls of Jerusalem, captured distant Thebes in Upper Egypt. And created arts of find expressiveness and sensitivity – a well-advanced culture. If only we could have thrown more men into that breach…” The wind ceased its parley with the sands, the jackals were not to be heard. And in the stillness the tumult came in flooding over me, rising the irrepressible rip of human agony, the cloying smell of sweat, blood, of fear – of human endeavour kneaded into dust. The ruckle of an Empire, but more so of one man, of one particular Man of flesh and bone, who must have lain dying close to where we stood. One Man of flesh and bone, an Empire ineffably more unique than those conglomerate empires built by men. Intensely, passionately my being went out to his, consecrating him in my living breast, yearning to eternalise him. Not as an Unknown Soldier. Oh no, I abominate what that stands for:- the enormity of robbing a Man of his uniqueness, his particularity, to turn him into a symbol, an abstraction. And whenever I see those edifices of stony bombast which nations erect, vile altars to herdish brutishness and folly, I sicken for the Dust entombed therein in usurped oblation to men’s vainglory. Ah, you warrior dying here amidst the conflagration engulfing the ‘Palace without Rival’. You Man of flesh and bone, your thoughts racing to your lived-ones’ fate, to the crash of your one known living world of Nineveh. Your rasping breath struggling to grip the air of life, to grasp your Life, your spark Divine. I shall never know where to buy your vegetables your were wont to go, and what you did for your tooth-ache. But like Jules Michelet with you I cry:- “Mon moi, ils m’arrachent mon moi!” ‘Nation'; ‘humanity’ – these otiose generics leave me cold. I love, I adulate life, the urge for immortality it enshrines, life in the singular, life in you, dying warrior of Nineveh. Not those generics empty of all but bombast, so ready to pimp as shibboleths, vehicles to men’s beastliness and folly.

On Kuyunjik we stood, Issa and I, hearts of lead, senses replete. Dimly I recalled a phrase form the bible – is it Ezekiel? -:- ‘Nineveh is laid waste; who will bemoan her’. But there silent we stood, Issa and I, and there we lamented.

The following day I visit him. Issa has internal concussion, lacerations over head and body and multiple fractures of the left arm. But grins happily from under the bandages. “My God, Issa, why dud you do it, you could’ve been killed!” “And more so you, you didn’t even notice the bastard coming at you.” Pause. “You’re my friend, so what’s the risk of a life to that?”, he shrugs his shoulders, winces with pain and grins. For a moment I look him straight in the eye. I know he meant it. No fuss, no bother, no empty mouthings. Just – ’friend’. In the absolute. Staunch, steady, abiding. “mutual”, I say to myself. Current cancer treatment is based on episodic encounters. Even during chemotherapy, patients generally see their physician for maybe eight to ten minutes every three weeks, said Peter Kuhn, ATOM-HP’s co-lead researcher and a professor of medicine, biomedical engineering, and aerospace and mechanical engineering at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

“The more than 30,000 minutes between visits are a missed opportunity,” Kuhn said. “Technology can be leveraged to fill this gap and provide a comprehensive picture. The collected data can lead to better treatment decisions, better survival rates, and better understanding between physician and patient.”

ATOM-HP is a convergent science initiative bringing together collaborators from the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Keck School of Medicine, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, USC Dornsife and the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy.

“As a university, we are making headway on multiple fronts to address the cancer crisis,” USC Provost Michael Quick said. “We have faculty, researchers and students across disciplines who are working collaboratively to fast track the detection of cancer and, ultimately, to find a cure for this disease. We strongly support this type of convergent science at USC, and we know we will have an impact on this widespread and devastating disease.”

The real-time data ATOM-HP provides likely will fast-track cancer research.

“One of the great barriers to solving the complicated cancer puzzle is a lack of timely information,” Kuhn said. “Analyses of cancer data usually become available years after the information was first collected. Having access to real-time data will be invaluable for scientists.”

The SXSL festival is a collaborative effort with the American Film Institute, National Parks Foundation, President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities, and South by Southwest.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) is determined to see the United States act on climate change.

In the last four years, he has delivered 150 speeches — amounting to 50 hours on the Senate floor — about the threat of global warming.

“I can’t let our country become an idiot country,” Whitehouse told Circa in a video interview published Monday.

“I wish that we had made more progress,” he added. “I keep hoping that one of [the speeches] will be like the Chinese water torture drop that finally makes the other side break and say, ‘Alright, I can’t take it any longer,’ but that hasn’t happened quite yet.”

Each of his 20-minute speeches considers a different angle of the climate argument, including the negative effects of climate change on human health and the role special interests play in the climate debate.

“We are sleepwalking through history, and we must wake up,” Whitehouse told senators during one of his first speeches in December 2012.

Since then, the Obama administration has made climate change and the environment a priority, but Congress has done little to address the issue.

With a Republican-majority House and Senate — and with Donald Trump, who has called climate change “bullshit” and a “hoax,” just weeks away from assuming the presidency — Whitehouse is bracing himself for another four years of tireless speeches.

“One hundred and fifty more [speeches] or a good climate bill — whichever comes first,” he said.

The Power of Choice

Have you ever met someone and felt a real connecting during the conversation? That’s how I felt when I chatted with this wife, mom, author and entrepreneur. Upon our initial introductions, I knew I needed to learn more about her and her offerings to the world.

Kate had a successful career in staffing and recruiting when she decided to branch out and start her on recruiting company. Almost immediately, it was successful. You would think that would be enough. She had a beautiful family and a thriving business. What more could she want? But the truth was, her business didn’t excite her. She found herself going through the motions of life and wasn’t really living. She knew there was a call on her life that was bigger. She wanted to be more than just a mom to her girls. She didn’t know why she had that ache, that longing for something more. She found herself on her knees in her daughter’s nursery.

She asked God to “show me something more. Show me the way.”

I knew I couldn’t walk back into the monotony of my life.

Kate knew her recruiting business didn’t feed her soul. But when she found herself coaching her candidates sharing with them the type of career they should have, she realized that wasn’t part of her business but really enjoyed it. So she launched Kate Butler Coaching.

We have Power of Choice

I gave myself permission to really dream again. Where all things were possible, how would I show up every day? From that place, books showed up and my coaching business.

During this crossroad, she realized that some of the teachings of the world were not what she wanted her children to learn. So she published her bestselling children’s book, More Than Mud. Through the process of writing her books, she found a mentor in Jack Canfield and began studying his teachings. Once she started implementing the success tools she learned from him, she gave herself 3 months to go all in and work her business. She realized she wasn’t creating happiness in the world and her happiness was tied to something else. People began to tell her she seemed different to them. So she reached to 5 of those people and offered transformational coaching to them. Her business began to organically grow from there.

So you might wonder what happened to her recruiting business since she had tapped into what she was called to do. I wondered the same thing. Kate still has that business. She understood that her recruiting business was a vertical to her next step.

One word that kept coming up for me during our conversation was authentic. In the coaching world, authenticity seems to be the buzz word of the day. But, Kate is the real deal. Her openness and willingness to share some of her struggles along with her successes was refreshing.

Kate describes how although we may live intentionally, sometimes a piece is missing. She offers a deep dive for people who are skimming the surface.

So what are some ways you can live intentionally?

What I learned from Kate in our brief discussion was to:

Set each day with an intention
. Before she gets on social media or responds to emails, she sets 3 things she wants to accomplish for the day and begin working on those things. This is not only for her business but her life. We often find ourselves responding and reacting to others before we meet our own needs.

Show your children life can be extraordinary.
One way is to live extraordinarily. Tap into those forgotten dreams.

You can choose your own joy.

Intention is more important than action.

So what are your forgotten dreams? Maybe they’re not forgotten, just delayed as mine have been. Ladies, it’s time to live extraordinarily. Dust those dreams off, set your intentions and make them happen. I know I will.

GOP Leader Makes Dubious Claim That More People Will Have Health Insurance Without Obamacare

WASHINGTON ― House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) suggested on Monday that more people would have health insurance once Republicans repeal Obamacare ― and that Congress would be able to retain popular provisions requiring companies to insure people with pre-existing conditions.

Asked how Republicans could be confident premiums wouldn’t skyrocket if they repealed the 2010 Affordable Care Act, McCarthy told reporters it came down to a “philosophical difference of belief.”

“We believe with more people into the market, you get greater choice and that the demand is higher,” he said. “You allow those that can’t afford it to enter the same market where they have more options, that the price will go down.”

Of course, there’s a similar concept animating Obamacare. The general idea is that by requiring people to get health insurance, more people ― including healthy people ― will sign up for benefits, thus lowering the overall cost for everyone.

It’s impossible to precisely gauge what effect a GOP health care reform package might have on the cost of health insurance or the number of people covered, because there currently is no plan beyond a broad, vague outline House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) unveiled earlier this year. President-elect Donald Trump’s positions on the issue have veered from vowing universal coverage to aligning himself with the more limited vision espoused by mainstream Republicans.

The national uninsured rate is currently at an all-time low, below 10 percent, directly as a result of the Affordable Care Act’s coverage expansion. The law achieved this by providing financial assistance to low- and moderate-income households, by guaranteeing that health insurers had to cover any willing customer regardless of pre-existing conditions and by instituting a mandate that most people obtain adequate health coverage or pay a tax penalty if they don’t. 

Republicans plan to repeal Obamacare next year and delay enacting any “replacement” proposal for up to three years in a dangerous gambit that could unravel the insurance market in the meantime.

Whatever final form a Republican health care proposal may take, the budgets approved by the GOP Congress in recent years and proposals ― including Ryan’s and legislation authored by Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.), who is Trump’s pick to be secretary of Health and Human Services ― offer a rough roadmap that illustrates their overarching principles.

The Obamacare “replacement” will almost certainly spend less money helping poorer people obtain coverage, weaken the promise of coverage for people with pre-existing conditions because it would lock out individuals who become uninsured at any point, and employ a less stringent approach than the individual mandate to induce healthier people into the insurance pool so their premiums offset the expenses of those with costly medical problems.

It would be unprecedented in health policy and in health care markets to somehow cover more people than the current system without providing financial assistance that’s at least as generous, an ironclad guarantee of coverage for people regardless of their medical histories and a strong mechanism to encourage healthier consumers’ enrollment.

Claims like McCarthy’s seemed based on the notion that by deregulating health insurance markets, healthy consumers would have access to skimpier coverage that would be cheaper than the plans on the Obamacare health insurance exchanges. And while this segment of the market ― which Obamacare has struggled to reach ― may benefit from lower premiums, people in it would face higher potential out-of-pocket costs for services that aren’t covered by the less-regulated plans.

Meanwhile, those who are older or sicker would face higher premiums and could be denied access to coverage if insurers were permitted to raise their rates based on age and pre-existing conditions ― something GOP proposals typically advocate.

Much of this is speculation because Republicans haven’t been clear about the details of their alternative, but it’s clear they plan to do something.

“We’ve taken the approach of Obamacare,” McCarthy said, adding that Democrats said premiums would go down and “found that that’s not true.” 

The sticker prices for health insurance for healthier and wealthier people who don’t get benefits from an employer are generally higher than they were before the Affordable Care Act became law for several key reasons. The law requires insurers to cover benefits like prescription drugs and maternity care that frequently weren’t covered before. Banning discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions also opened up the insurance market to those with the greatest medical needs and highest costs. 

But the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies for monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs can significantly reduce what low- and middle-income Obamacare enrollees pay. And Republican proposals typically offer much less generous financial assistance for health insurance costs, if they offer any at all.

As for when Republicans’ changes would take effect, McCarthy said there would probably be a delay to implement the repeal of Obamacare, creating a crisis Republicans think Democrats will help them solve. But it’s just as likely Democrats won’t do that and will instead insist that Republicans bring the law back, as recent comments from some Democratic lawmakers illustrate.

That sort of impasse could create an greater crisis in which insurance companies offer more expensive plans and healthy people therefore forego coverage. It could even convince insurers to exit the health insurance exchanges entirely to avoid the risk of participating in a struggling marketplace on track to being eliminated.

One reporter asked McCarthy how Republicans could avoid raising prices while keeping popular provisions that Trump says he wants to preserve ― like ensuring health insurance access for people with pre-existing conditions and allowing young adults to stay on their parents’ insurance until they’re 26. While McCarthy didn’t vow that Republicans would actually keep those provisions intact, he seemed to think removing the individual mandate wouldn’t devastate the law.

Asked how, without the mandate, Republicans would prevent people from only getting health insurance once they got sick, McCarthy said, “Wait to see what we draft.”

In other words, he thinks Republicans need to repeal the law before anyone can find out what they’ll replace it with.

Cecile Richards Or Tom Perez For DNC Chair

The Democrats desperately need a new national party leader, technically the chair of the Democratic National Committee. The current national committee, elected at the last Democratic convention based on the relative strengths of the Clinton and Sanders forces, is narrowly divided, and close to deadlock.

Rep Keith Ellison of Minnesota, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, an early favorite after Sanders endorsed him, now appears to be fading. Though Senator Chuck Schumer quickly jumped in and backed Ellison as part of Schumer’s repositioning as a progressive, there is pressure on Schumer and other early supporters to back off.

The biggest problem is that Ellison is a sitting Member of Congress, and national party chair ought to be a full time job. The best recent DNC chair, Howard Dean, who rebuilt a 50-state party in the mid-2000s, wanted the job back, but Sanders vetoed that because he felt Dean had been disrespectful to him. Dean has now dropped out.

Other objections have lately been raised, that Ellison is a Muslim and that he is not friendly to Israel. His religion is the wrong reason to challenge his candidacy, but the latest disclosures of remarks that alienated much of the Jewish community make sink Ellison as a party unifier.

In 2010, it recently emerged, Ellison spoke at a fund-raiser hosted by a past president of the Muslim American society. In the speech, referring to Israel. He declared, “We can’t let another country to treat us like we’re their ATM.” This is not entirely wrong as a description of Israel’s view of U.S. aid, but Ellison added:

“The United States foreign policy in the Middle East is governed by what is good or bad through a country of 7 million people [Israel]. A region of 350 million all turns on a country of 7 million. Does that make sense? Is that logic? Right? When the Americans who trace their roots back to those 350 million [Muslims] get involved, everything changes.”

So while it is appalling to have Ellison’s candidacy founder for the sin of criticizing Israel, his language was pretty raw and Ellison is now probably too radioactive to get the job. No other contenders seem to have what it takes.

Here are two outside-the-box ideas for potential people to lead the national Democratic Party. Neither has declared a candidacy. This is just a citizen nomination, from me:

Cecile Richards.
The head of national Planned Parenthood, a job she’s held for a decade, is far and away one of the best organizers, on the ground and nationally, in the progressive Democratic universe, as well a prodigious fundraiser for progressive causes, a fighter and a genuine hero.

As a young adult, Richards was a labor organizer in the south. She did a brief stint as an aide to Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, and then headed a broad get-out-the vote coalition in 2004 called America Votes.

Tom Perez. Obama’s labor secretary and former assistant attorney general in charge of civil rights, is one of the best we’ve got. He is also a superb politician, with no immediate plans after January 20.

Perez is great at connecting to the working class — black, white, Latino. He served as the elected president of the Mongtomery County Council and many of his admirers were disappointed he passed up the chance to run for governor of Maryland.

Both of these leaders are charismatic, in their 50s, widely admired, and good at details as well as at rousing grass roots enthusiasm. As full time party leaders, either could re-energize a party in an understandable funk. None has Democratic enemies.

Both bridge the Clinton/Obama wing of the party with the now ascendant Warren/Sanders wing. Both are somewhat to the left of the Clintons ideologically, though Hillary was a Richards ally as a stalwart on reproductive rights. And Perez was one of the most progressive of Obama’s appointments.

The appointment of either one would sidestep a potentially divisive factional dispute, would look forward rather than backward, and unify the party behind a progressive leader.

As that old typing-drill sentence had it: Now is the time for all good men [and women] to come to the aid of the party. Lord knows, the party needs some fresh leadership.

5 Things That Will Make You Much Happier

There’s enough advice on happiness floating around out there to make your head spin. Yet, this is understandable, as everyone is different. What makes one person happy might make another miserable.

In the face of so much contradictory, and often subjective, advice, what are you supposed to do if you want to live a happier life? Just forget about all that subjective advice and focus your energy and attention on science-proven facts.


“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” – Dalai Lama

UCLA neuroscience researcher Alex Korb has spent a great deal of time studying the effects of different happiness strategies on the brain. His findings have a lot to teach us about what actually works when it comes to boosting happiness.

Korb’s research demonstrated that your thoughts–and the emotions you feel in response to those thoughts–have a profound impact on surprising areas of your brain.

Guilt and shame, for example, activate the brain’s reward center, which explains why we have such a strong tendency to heap guilt and shame upon ourselves. Likewise, worrying increases activity in the prefrontal cortex (the rational brain), which is why worrying can make you feel more in control than doing nothing at all.

1. Gratitude creates happiness. I’m not advocating worry, guilt, and shame as the path to happiness. The illustration shows why we tend to succumb to thoughts that fuel these emotions. The real neural antidepressant is gratitude. Gratitude boosts levels of serotonin and dopamine–the brain’s happy chemicals and the same chemicals targeted by antidepressant medications. The striking thing about gratitude is that it can work even when things aren’t going well for you. That’s because you don’t actually have to feel spontaneous gratitude in order to produce chemical changes in your brain; you just have to force yourself to think about something in your life that you appreciate. This train of thought activates your brain to make you feel happier.

2. Labeling negative feelings dilutes their power. There is an amazing amount of power in simply labeling your negative emotions. In one study, participants underwent fMRI scans of their brains while they labeled negative emotions. When they named these emotions, the brain’s prefrontal cortex took over and the amygdala (where emotions are generated) calmed down. This effect doesn’t just work with your own emotions; labeling the emotions of other people calms them down too, which is why FBI hostage negotiators frequently rely on this technique.

3. Making decisions feels good. Similar to naming emotions, making decisions engages the prefrontal cortex, which calms the amygdala and the rest of the limbic system. The key is to make a “good enough” decision. Trying to make the perfect decision causes stress. We’ve always known that, but now there’s scientific research that explains why. Making a “good enough” decision activates the dorsolateral prefrontal areas of the brain, calming emotions down and helping you feel more in control. Trying to make a perfect decision, on the other hand, ramps up ventromedial frontal activity–which basically means your emotions get overly involved in the decision-making process.

4. It helps you to lend a hand.Taking the time to help your colleagues not only makes them happy but also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support to others were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you aren’t overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your happiness.

5. Our brains are wired for touch. Humans are social animals, to the point that our brains react to social exclusion in the same way that they react to physical pain, with activity in the anterior cingulate and insula. Similarly, our brains are hardwired to interpret touch as social acceptance. Touch is one of the primary stimuli for releasing oxytocin, which calms the amygdala and, in turn, calms emotions. There are even studies that show that holding hands with a loved one actually reduces the brain’s response to pain. You might think that’s bad news for people who are socially isolated, but studies show that a massage increases serotonin by as much as 30%. Touch reduces stress hormones, decreases the perception of pain, improves sleep, and reduces fatigue.

Bringing It All Together

Kolb’s research highlights just how amazing the brain is, and he summarized his findings succinctly when he said, “Everything is interconnected. Gratitude improves sleep. Sleep reduces pain. Reduced pain improves your mood. Improved mood reduces anxiety, which improves focus and planning. Focus and planning help with decision-making. Decision-making further reduces anxiety and improves enjoyment. Enjoyment gives you more to be grateful for, which keeps that loop of the upward spiral going. Enjoyment makes it more likely you’ll exercise and be social, which, in turn, makes you happier.”

How To Break A Bad Habit — For Good

Have you ever tried to break a bad habit, only to give up in frustration? The problem isn’t that you’re weak or that the bad habit is too ingrained; in all likelihood, you just gave up too soon.

Researchers at University College, London, found that it takes 66 days for a new habit to form. Likewise, as long as there is no physical addiction involved, it takes 66 days for you to shake a bad habit. But before you can develop the motivation to stick it out for that long, you need to understand how bad habits form in the first place.

Bad habits are formed and reinforced via the habit loop. First, something triggers you to initiate an undesired behavior. Maybe you’re feeling stressed, so you decide to numb out on Facebook for an hour or eat a whole bag of Flamin’ Cheetos. The trigger event is whatever puts this idea in your head. The second step is the behavior itself. Your brain says, “Sure, you deserve some Flamin’ Cheetos,” so you dig in.

The third step — and this part is crucial — is the reward. The behavior has to reward you in some way. That doesn’t mean it’s good for you or that it’s smart, just that it does something that your brain likes. Numbing out on Facebook might help you forget your problems for a while or to put off something that you don’t want to do, and we all know, all too well, the reward that comes from eating a bag of junk food. For better or worse, these rewards increase the likelihood that you’ll repeat the behavior.

Once you repeat a behavior enough times, the habit loop becomes so automated that you don’t even think about it anymore. Instead of making a conscious decision to procrastinate, you just automatically pull up Facebook as soon as you sit down at your desk or you’re digging into the Cheetos before you even realize that you’re feeling stressed.

Once a habit becomes automatic, it’s a lot harder to break–and that’s why you’re probably failing if you’re not giving yourself 66 days to wean yourself off it.

Sixty-six days might seem like a long time, but there are specific stages you have to go through that will make the process feel much shorter. Let’s take a look at these.

Days 1-10: Look Inward

It’s usually pretty obvious which bad habits are causing the most problems in your life–the ones that keep coming up in performance appraisals or sparking arguments with your spouse. Once you’ve identified a habit to change, the real challenge lies in understanding your triggers, and that can be harder than it sounds, especially if the habit has become so ingrained that you do it subconsciously. If you give it enough thought, you’ll get to the bottom of it. Maybe you keep getting tickets for speeding, and you realize that you drive too fast when you leave work in a bad mood, or maybe you snack when you’re stressed. Looking inward to explore the source of the habit you’re trying to break makes breaking that habit possible. The first 10 days of trying to break the habit will provide substantial insight into the source of the habit, should you choose to look. Building self-awareness is critical to emotional intelligence, and your act of introspection will serve you in many ways beyond breaking your bad habit.

Days 11-40: Spread the Word

Accountability is crucial in breaking bad habits. In this stage, you create a very vocal accountability network by telling everybody you can about the habit you’re trying to break, and the more vocal you are about it, the more likely people are to call you out when you slip up. Let them know that you really want them to say something. Just remember that you might have to keep reminding them–it’s just as easy for them to forget and backslide as it is for you to do so.

Days 41-66: Mind Your Relapse Triggers

As you head for the home stretch, be ready to make some mistakes — it happens to everybody. Just be on the lookout for common threads running through those mistakes. If you tend to relapse in a certain situation, you’d be smart to avoid that trigger completely until you feel that your bad habit is really extinguished. Keeping your triggers from surprising you when it feels like you’ve kicked the habit is typically the difference between success and failure this late in the process.

Day 67: Reward Yourself

Sure, you could say that breaking the habit is its own reward, but why pass up an opportunity to celebrate? Just don’t celebrate by indulging in the habit you worked so hard to break! You should also use this opportunity to reflect and select the next habit you’re going to break.

Bringing It All Together

You’re not weak, stupid, or lazy if you have a hard time breaking bad habits. There are psychological factors that make this process challenging for everyone, but the very science behind what makes habits hard to break also provides a research-supported method for doing it. Focus on one habit at a time and follow these steps and the timetable that goes with them, and your chances of success will go through the roof.

Donald Trump Will Be President In Just Over A Month And The Constitution Is Already Under Attack

With a little over a month until Donald Trump takes office, the president-elect and his allies have already begun to attack the guarantees of the First Amendment, signaling how imperiled the fundamental freedoms of the Constitution could be under a Trump presidency.

Trump has long shown contempt for the media and, as he prepares to take power, he and his allies haven’t held back.

On Thursday, Corey Lewandowski, who is Trump’s former campaign manager and expected to have a role in a Trump White House, said that New York Times editor Dean Baquet should be in jail because the paper published parts of Trump’s tax return during the campaign.

“We had one of the top people at The New York Times come to Harvard University and say, ‘I’m willing to go to jail to get a copy of Donald Trump’s taxes so I can publish them,’” Lewandowski said, according to Politico. “Dean Baquet came here and offered to go to jail — you’re telling me, he’s willing to commit a felony on a private citizen to post his taxes, and there isn’t enough scrutiny on the Trump campaign and his business dealings and his taxes?”

“It’s egregious,” Lewandowski added. “He should be in jail.”

Even after winning the presidency, Trump has had an almost myopic focus on the Times, criticizing the paper’s coverage of him. He has pledged to sue the newspaper, though, when he met with its staff, he called it “a great, great American jewel. A world jewel.”

But Trump has undermined the press by limiting its access to him, while surrogates have made the absurd claim that facts simply don’t exist anymore. The incoming commander in chief has also suggested that Americans who burn flags should lose their citizenship and do jail time. That would be a clear violation of the constitution, as the Supreme Court ruled in 1989 that flag burning was constitutionally protected speech.

The New York Observer, which is owned by Trump’s son in law and close adviser, Jared Kushner, also published an op-ed this week calling on the FBI to investigate nationwide protests ― a form of constitutionally protected free speech ― following Trump’s victory. 

Trump’s statement that Muslims should be banned from entering the United States is also an attack on the First Amendment, along with several other constitutional protections.

But perhaps more disturbingly, there’s been logic emerging from the Trump team that anything Trump does is protected by the office of the presidency.

When he explained the potential conflict of interest with his business, for example, Trump said “the law’s totally on my side, the president can’t have a conflict of interest.”

Kellyanne Conway, another of Trump’s campaign managers, said that his spreading misinformation on Twitter constituted presidential behavior simply because he specifically engaged in it.

“He’s the president-elect, so that’s presidential behavior,” she said.

The Power of Eloquence

Beautiful Words Have Power

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging symbol,” St. Paul wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians two thousand years ago. “If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have faith that I can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor, and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.” Paul bequeathed us faith, hope and love -these three — “but the greatest of these,” he said, “is love.”
Paul passed away, as we all must in our time, but he continues to enrich the human experience with his beautiful words that are timeless. It should be noted that when Paul spoke of love, he was not talking about romance between a man and a woman, but rather love for our fellow human beings. Interestingly, the scholars working for King James translated that key phrase as “faith, hope and charity” which I believe came closer to Paul’s meaning.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident,” wrote Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence two centuries ago, “that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Jefferson and his editors among the Founding Fathers toyed with that last one. Some wanted to say “life, liberty and property.” But they hesitated to assert that everyone was entitled by God to property. I am glad they chose “pursuit of happiness” instead of “pursuit of property,” for the words are beautiful in their vague simplicity. Like the words of St. Paul, they have stood the test of time and still inspire people.
Some are troubled by Jefferson’s eloquence about liberty because of his hypocrisy as a slave owner, and he was certainly aware of that even within the context of his own time. Jefferson knew slavery was evil and acknowledged as much, saying it alarmed him “like a fire bell in the night” as if he had foreseen the consequences that would ensue for that failure to deal with the worst blot on our nation’s history. That was left for another great wordsmith to deal with.
“Fourscore and seven years ago, our forefathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” opined Abraham Lincoln at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1863. “We are now engaged in a great Civil War testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.” He concluded his short address with the hope that “government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
St. Paul, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln shared a gift for beautiful words – constructing sentences that soar beyond mere communication to touch the heart and inspire humanity to rise above its mean estate. It is difficult to imagine President-elect Trump joining this company – tweets do not often sustain eloquence – but you never know. If he can summon President Reagan’s speechwriter Peggy Noonan back to Washington, anything is possible.

We’ll Remember Cuba’s Ebola Compassion Long After Castro’s Death

While the Cuban government’s accomplishments and failures are still being tallied in the days following Fidel Castro’s death on Nov. 25, the island nation’s health care system is one achievement expected to stand the test of history. 

One striking example of the country’s unique health footprint: For a nation with only 11 million people, Cuba sent an unparalleled number of medical personnel to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2014.

When Ebola spread through West Africa in 2014, Cuba announced that it would send more than 460 doctors and nurses to West Africa. The epidemic ultimately killed 11,310 people, more than any previous outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

Ultimately Cuba deployed approximately 265 medical personnel to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, according to the World Health Organization.

For comparison’s sake, in November 2014, President Obama promised just 65 health professionals, supported by 4,000 U.S. troops. (WHO said it’s difficult to track actual personnel deployed from the U.S. because they weren’t a unified group like the Cubans were. Americans may have volunteered with nongovernmental organizations, for example.)

“[Cuba] has become something like the world’s first responder to international crises in recent years,” Jon Lee Anderson wrote in The New Yorker in 2014. Indeed, Cuba’s 50,000 roving medical professionals stationed in more than 60 countries are often the first foreign health workers at catastrophes around the world. Cuban doctors, for example cared for almost 40 percent of victims during Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake, according to The Guardian. The deployments are the result of a longtime Cuban program to send health care workers abroad as a way to boost its image and to trade services for goods for the embargoed island.

The Cuban medical response is built on a larger culture of population health. Cuban doctors practice prevention-oriented primary care and are responsible for improving the overall health of their patient populations. Cuba also has one of the best doctor-to-population ratios in the world, meaning the country spends far less money per person on health care costs than does the United States, but it boasts a better child mortality rate and similar life expectancy

According to the World Bank, in 2010 Cuba had 6.7 doctors per 1,000 people, compared with the United States’ 2.5 doctors per 1,000 people.

“Unlike students trained in the U.S. or Western Europe, Cuban students are trained to improve population health status,” Dr. C. William Keck, professor emeritus at Northeast Ohio Medical University, previously told The Huffington Post. 

“We certainly aren’t here. When I went to medical school, I was taught to do battle with disease one patient at a time. You dealt with what came in the door. You didn’t focus much on the community. It’s a much different approach,” said Keck, who is a member of the Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba, a nonprofit that promotes U.S.-Cuba health collaborations.

That dedication to community health extends beyond Cuba’s borders. 

“We know what can happen. We know we’re going to a hostile environment,” Cuban doctor Leonardo Fernandez told Reuters before he left to fight Ebola in West Africa in 2014.

“But it is our duty. That’s how we’ve been educated. This little bit that we have, when people need it, we are capable of sharing. It’s a basic concept.”

Massive Cedar Sculpture Sent A Dozen FBI Workers To The Hospital

More than a million taxpayer dollars went toward installing ― and then removing ― a 15,000-pound cedar sculpture at the FBI’s field office in Miami after at least a dozen workers became seriously ill.

Last year, the General Services Administration, which leases office space to federal agencies, commissioned artist Ursula von Rydingsvard to create Cedrus, a 17-foot western red cedar sculpture. The structure, made of 30 individual pieces imported from Vancouver, resembled a massive tornado. 

It certainly did some damage.

Cedrus looked impressive, but it soon began to make workers sick. According to documents obtained by Politico, the installation’s cedar dust triggered allergic reactions ― with the office’s only nurse suffering one of the worst.

“Upon the installation of the art sculpture, the nurse developed rhinitis, difficulty swallowing, sinus pressure, sneezing, has difficulty breathing and began to itch all over,” read a June 2015 internal FBI letter that Politico obtained. 

A different employee’s “face became very swollen,” and another was hospitalized for 11 days.

The sculpture was removed months later and now sits in a storage facility in Maryland. The GSA “deep cleaned” the office spaces after wrapping Cedrus in plastic, the agency told Gizmodo.

GSA officials initially believed the sculpture was “worth more” than the $ 750,000 it paid, according to the internal documents. But it cost an estimated $ 412,000 to remove the sculpture, and ultimately cost taxpayers $ 1.2 million.

WATCH: Embracing the Mystery (Not Having All the Answers)

Trader Joe’s Recalls 2 Kinds Of Hummus In 30 States

Trader Joe’s is recalling two flavors of hummus that may be contaminated with listeria.

The recall includes packages of white bean and basil hummus and/or Mediterranean hummus with “use by” dates up to and including Dec. 15 and a printed plant identification code “C,” according to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recalled products come in 16-ounce tubs and were sold in as many as 30 states. 

So far, no illnesses tied to the hummus have been reported. Bakkavor Foods USA, Inc., the company that produces the hummus, found bacteria in a product made using the same equipment as the hummus and has addressed the issue, the FDA reports. 

Listeria bacterium can cause serious infections in anyone, though pregnant women, newborns, older adults and those with weakened immune systems are especially at risk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

Trader Joe’s says it has removed all potentially harmful hummus from store shelves. Customers who purchased the hummus are encouraged to throw it away or return it to Trader Joe’s for a full refund. 

The recall comes on the heels of last month’s Sabra hummus recall, which was also issued due to listeria concerns.

Democrats To Trump Nominees: Show Us Your Taxes

WASHINGTON ― Democratic senators on Thursday proposed requiring all the senior-level appointees of President-elect Donald Trump to release their taxes ― something Trump himself, in a startling departure from the norm for presidential nominees, never got around to doing.

Arguing that Trump has done little to guard against conflicts of interest in his own dealings, Sens. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said that the billionaires and millionaires Trump is selecting for his cabinet need to be vetted especially carefully.

“Donald Trump campaigned on a promise that he would drain the swamp,” Stabenow told reporters.

“But it seems [he] thinks the way to do that is by filling it with even bigger swamp creatures,” Murray said.

Among the super-rich would-be government officials are hedge fund billionaire Steven Mnuchin, billionaire investor Wilbur Ross and Amway billionaire Betsy DeVos, whom Trump has put forward as his picks for treasury secretary, commerce secretary and education secretary, respectively.

Mnuchin’s nomination would go through the Financial Services Committee, and under existing committee standards he would already be required to submit three years of tax returns.

But most other committees have not typically required tax forms. When committees meet at the start of the year to pass their internal rules and budgets, the Democrats say they will offer measures to require the new disclosure in all the panels.

“Our proposal is a roadmap for each committee chair to increase the openness and transparency among senior government officials,” Wyden said. “Government officials don’t get a free pass to flout our tax laws, abuse loopholes or hide money in shelters. The president-elect’s top officials are required to resolve conflicts of interest, and I believe they ought to be able to prove they follow the nation’s tax laws just like everybody else.”

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 

It’s possible, or perhaps likely, that Republicans will resist the idea, since increased disclosure could offer Democrats more information to use against Trump administration nominees.

But such records have proved important in the past. Wyden pointed out that in 2009, after Barack Obama had nominated then-Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) as secretary of health and human services, information in Daschle’s taxes led him to withdraw from consideration for the post.

The Democrats did not say how far they are willing to push to win the increased disclosure. When it was pointed out to them that Democrats could filibuster when the Senate formally votes to organize the committees at the start of the next session, they did not commit to such a blockade.

“At this point we’re talking to Republican colleagues, because this is basically in the interests of good government and transparency and accountability,” Stabenow said. “We’ll see what happens, and then we’ll make a decision from there.”

What is a hard thing to do in life? Understanding that your life is not a television show.

One of the hardest things to understand about my life has been the fact that it is not episodic. That is to say, most of the time life is not full of “important stuff.” My life isn’t a television show. It is mostly the stuff that happens between each episode.

Most of the time, important stuff happens when you least expect it, and when you’re barely ready for it. The majority of your time will be spent between the important stuff. This includes:

  • Doing laundry.
  • Folding laundry.
  • Grocery shopping.
  • Paying bills.
  • Picking small crumbs up from your floor so as to delay vacuuming.

This is difficult to swallow as you get older and cease to be ushered from event to event and hand-delivered meaningful experiences. Most of the time, we’re doing what has to be done in order to better position ourselves for what we wish to do.

If this sounds like drudgery, that’s because it is. There are some pretty salient myths about the joy of daily life, and I think we are lead to believe that a happy life is one filled each day with intrigue and adventure. We are not the Great Gatsby. Most of my day is a grind – and I actually enjoy my job.

If you can’t be happy with the things in front of you, no great plot line is going to save you from that.

And if you figure out how to do that, tell me how.

Do Therapists Think About Their Clients Between Sessions?

Before a session, I may have to finish notes, take a phone call, or handle an emergency and may not have much time to prepare to see the next client. Because of the realities of working in a busy practice, I have learned to do an abbreviated version of what I do when I have more time. Time to think about who I am and what I am trying to accomplish, what I do and do not have control over, and what I do and do not have as a responsibility.

I remind myself that I am a human being, well-trained and experienced, yet always capable of learning. I need to go into each session with a balanced combination of confidence and humility. I try to go into each session with as little active memory of the previous one, open to what is possible in the new one, and not thinking about anything else that’s going to happen later in the day. Very easy to set as a goal, very hard to do.

I often try to ground myself by looking outside a window at the trees and the sky to get some perspective, take deep breaths, and even “shake off” the last session. You might laugh at me if you saw me in between sessions doing what looks like a bizarre interpretive dance, but there is nothing like moving and shaking things up to begin fresh. I know therapists who climb up and down a flight of stairs or walk around the building between clients when it’s feasible. Sometimes the requirement to remain calm and thoughtful regarding responses during sessions means that in between sessions, it can feel superb to be the opposite. I guess that if you saw ER physicians or EMTs between crises, they’d not always look composed. Antics are useful for stress management. Being silly on a regular basis is good for the professional soul.

I’ll nuke my coffee or tea, or get more water and offer to get the same for my client before we head back to my office. I’ll take a moment to look at the note I made in the last session about my client’s therapy homework assignment or what the focus of this current session was going to be, if that was decided. After finding out how things have been going since the last meeting, we get down to work.

I think about clients in between sessions the same way that thoughts about the office, school, or work probably filter into the minds of others as they are driving or commuting home or they are having downtime. Even with healthy boundaries and not being in the habit of work following me home, my mind will naturally replay a comment or an incident that happened in therapy sometimes. Rather than spend a lot of time outside of sessions trying to figure out what that’s about, I will “note” it and ask myself to give it some serious consideration when I am back in work/therapist mode.

I liken it to walking up to your house and noticing some weeds growing out of the gutters. You aren’t going to drop everything and throw a ladder up and start scooping out the stuff right then and there, but you’ll make a mental note that “I need to get up there when I have time this weekend and get that done.” I know it’s probably important if something about a client is coming to mind, but it’s a “not now” prioritizing that must be done to protect my time away from the office. I can’t keep doing work away from work, or I would burn out.

If something about a session keeps “breaking through” and I can’t push it away until I’m back at work, I will take the time to sort it all out so I can put it away again, so to speak. It takes time and energy to do that, which is why it is “work” and I try not to let “work” impose upon my non-work time. But as other therapists know, we are human, and our clients and their stories and their experiences can have an impact on us. We have to process that impact emotionally, intellectually, professionally, and as fellow human beings, or the work we do will begin to cause us harm.

I may need to let myself feel something like anger, sadness, or confusion either because that’s appropriate for me to be feeling after having listened to or helping with an individual problem and I couldn’t feel it/process it in the session. Or I may find that I am feeling something powerful partly because my client wasn’t feeling what would have been congruent given what they were bringing up and discussing. That will give me relevant information about what I need to focus on next time, if I’m feeling my client’s feelings instead of my client being able to feel his/her emotions, that’s important to know and address.

Sometimes I just find myself thinking about a client whose work or progress in therapy I am jubilant about, and that’s a good thing. Sometimes I reflect on a patient and just hope they are doing okay and just send that thought out to the Universe. Those ways of thinking about clients not only don’t cause any harm, but they are also beneficial. Just like you might think about a goal you achieved at work that makes you feel good or a co-worker who is going through a rough time and hoping they are having a better evening, it doesn’t take anything away from you. It makes you feel happy, connected and reminds you of one of the reasons why you are where you are and why you’re doing what you’re doing.

Mother Livid That Daughter’s Teacher Asked If She’s ‘Illegal’

A Virginia high school English teacher is in hot water after writing a comment on a Latina student’s essay that asked about her immigration status.

Kelly Valera told WUSA-TV that one day after the election, her daughter’s sophomore English teacher at Centreville High School asked students to write their feelings about the results.

Valera’s daughter wrote that she was disgusted that Donald Trump was elected because he “judges people by their race and gender.”

She added: “I am thankful for the life I have and my family (which Trump is trying to deport because we are Hispanic, but whatever).”

When the teacher returned the paper, the girl noticed a comment next to the line about deportation:

“If I may ask, Are you legal or illegal? It depends on that factor for deportation. I hope you get to stay!”

Immigrants living in the United States without documentation are more appropriately referred to as “undocumented.” As journalist Maria Hinojosa explained on MSNBC’s “AM Joy” in October, human beings cannot be “illegal.” Rather, they are “living without papers or without documents in this country.”

At first, Valera’s daughter thought her teacher’s “illegal” question was a joke and posted a picture of the essay to Snapchat. Parents of other students saw it and complained to the school, according to Fusion.net.

Valera, who asked that her daughter not be named in media reports, then requested a meeting with Centreville High administrators. They agreed the teacher’s comment was out of bounds.

Valera’s daughter was transferred to another English class. Her mother said the teacher, whose name wasn’t released by school officials, should be suspended.

“Now [my daughter] is the one feeling like she did something wrong because she was pulled out of her class with all her friends,” Valera told WUSA-TV. “These kids are scared, and she’s scared because of the way the teacher made her feel.”

Fairfax County Public Schools released a statement confirming that the district considers the teacher’s comment “inappropriate.” The district said its policy is “to provide equitable treatment and opportunities for all.”

School officials aren’t legally permitted to request a student’s proof of citizenship and don’t enforce immigration laws.

School administrators declined to discuss possible disciplinary action against the teacher, according to The Associated Press.

How do you know if you’ve discovered your passion? You talk as if there is one passion in your life, one that you have to uncover to lead to fulfillment. I think that approach is fundamentally flawed. I believe that the great life is full of many passions.

You use the word “discover.” Right! Keep on learning. Don’t expect to settle down when you find one passion; keep looking for more. Passion after passion after passion.

As you get older, you will become exposed to many new things, things you never realized existed. Even when you are 50 years old, you have touched only a tiny fraction of the world. Don’t focus too early on one.

I’ve said this before, but it is an example worth repeating: My daughter Elizabeth majored in math. When she was filling out the forms for graduation, she discovered that she had inadvertently fulfilled all the requirements for a major in literature; that wasn’t her intention, she had just been exploring. She took a job in Europe working for the OECD, something that was neither math or literature. Later she became involved in a start-up company in the UK, and finally, she returned to the US where we set up the non-profit Berkeley Earth to study environmental problems. Was she following her passion? No. How could such a career have been conceived of by a youngster? She was exploring. She loves her work.

Exploring is an adventure. It is full of uncertainty. It is much more challenging to explore than it is to follow your passion; there is much more uncertainty. If you feel that you must avoid all anxiety, then it is a very uncomfortable way to go. You live with doubt. It is not easy; in fact, it is full of wrong directions, and when you find yourself on a path that is not going where you want, you have to be ready to get off. (As my wife did when she quit IBM to go back to school to study architecture.) But exploration is the only good way to learn enough about the world that you can discover many passions that you never knew you had.

Stephen Hawking’s PSA About Obesity Should Be Required Viewing

Stephen Hawking, distinguished English scientist, recently filmed a public service announcement to address one of the largest public health problems facing humanity today: Obesity. 

“Millions of lives are in danger,” Hawking says in the video produced by Gen-Pep, a Swedish non-profit organization which promotes health for young people and children. “As a cosmologist, I see the world as a whole and I am here to address one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century.”

The obesity rate in the United States alone is staggering. More than one third of the adult American population ― 38 percent ― is obese, according to the most current Robert Wood Johnson State of Obesity report. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projects that one in three adults could have type 2 diabetes, one of the most common complications of obesity, by the year 2050. 

The simple ad features Hawking alone in a room. Toward the end, Hawking ― who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, which causes paralysis ― remarks about mankind’s tendency to sit too much, move too little. 

“For what it’s worth, how being sedentary has become a major problem,” Hawking says and then pauses, “is beyond my understanding.”

The U.S. Should Meet Global Standards On Breastfeeding And Paid Leave

The disturbing consequences of inadequate paid leave are all too familiar to families in countries where affordable leave is insufficient, and especially in the United States, which lacks a government policy altogether. A factory worker back at work just three weeks after giving birth had to pump milk in the parking lot on breaks. A hotel worker lost her job because no positions were available to accommodate two to three unpaid 15-minute breaks to pump milk over the course of an eight-hour shift.

We can do better as a nation.

When taking time off after giving birth means risking a paycheck, everything becomes arduous — healing, bonding with the baby, breastfeeding. Clearly breastfeeding should not be a luxury afforded only to those fortunate enough to have jobs with generous paid leave policies or wealthy enough not to miss one parent’s income. Governments need to invest in guaranteed paid family and medical leave and other policies so that families don’t have to win the job lottery to give their children the healthiest start to life.

The benefits of exclusive and continued breastfeeding for at least six months and up to two years have been clearly demonstrated: a lower risk of infant mortality–to the tune of 800,000 lives saved worldwide–and of diabetes, malnutrition, stunting, and other chronic diseases. There are also benefits for the mother, including lower risk of adult diabetes, breast and ovarian cancer, and obesity.

Ensuring paid family leave and other supports to breastfeeding parents is not at odds with the interests of employers; it’s actually good for business. Breastfeeding contributes to a smarter, more productive workforce through better brain development, greater educational achievement, and stronger immune systems. And when women have access to paid leave, private areas to breastfeed or express milk, and other workplace accommodations such as child care, they are more likely to stay with a company, advance in their careers, and have fewer absences, benefitting companies’ bottom lines and their family finances.

It’s been almost 20 years since the International Labour Organization issued a mandate that guarantees women 14 weeks of paid maternity leave and breaks to accommodate breastfeeding on the job, and prohibits job loss or a reduction in pay for reasons relating to maternity. Other countries have risen to this standard or exceeded it, going even further to provide parental leave to both mothers and fathers – whose involvement boosts infant well-being and successful breastfeeding. So why is the United States so quick to deny families these proven benefits? Why do we insist women move mountains to breastfeed their babies, overcoming all the barriers thrown in their way?

It doesn’t have to be like this. While the United States leaves working mothers to fend for themselves, other high income countries like Canada and Sweden and middle-income countries like Vietnam, Kenya and the Philippines have all expanded paid leave and taken steps to help facilitate breastfeeding at work. This in turn leads to lower healthcare costs and parents who actually report higher levels of happiness compared with parents in the United States. The United States is only one of two industrialized nations in the world that doesn’t offer paid leave and ranks last among countries in the industrialized world with supportive policies for women who want to breastfeed.

There has been progress in promoting paid family and medical leave in the United States, through strong public interest, paid leave programs in a handful of states and a federal proposal, the FAMILY Act. Numerous private companies–including Deloitte, Virgin Airlines, Spotify, Netflix, Google, and Facebook, all successful global leaders–have announced generous policies in an effort to attract and retain talented workers, steps that should be motivational to government leaders.

We need governments in every country to demonstrate leadership in this area. We can’t just tout the benefits of breastfeeding – we need to make it possible by investing in concrete policies: lactation counseling in health centers; paid leave; private spaces to breastfeed or express milk in offices, retailers and airports; and flexible schedules at work.

It’s time to meet the standards set by the ILO and the progress of other nations as we improve the United States’ workplace policies and societal norms when it comes to breastfeeding. It’s time to make sure no mother has to pump milk in a factory parking lot three weeks after giving birth. It’s time to do better.

The Uneasy feeling

It seems like something that is difficult to shake. At every life stage we go through, we continuously have an uneasy feeling, and it’s sort of there constantly in the background. Nagging us continuously creating doubt, fear and making us question our abilities. It is an invisible dialogue we have no matter how successful or confident things seem on the outside there is that ever pervading doubt.

I think this may be a survival mechanism, an animal instinct to always be on the lookout. Nobody likes to acknowledge this side of themselves, it puts you in a vulnerable spot. It’s the social media world now, where what is posted is perfection, happy faces, continuous highs and good moments. We are bombarded with images and thoughts which make us feel like that is the true reality, when it is really just a small subset of positive emotions. What is shared is not the whole spectrum of sentiments or authenticity, not only is it a limited view, it is a filtered reality of that small window.

The human experience is very difficult to capture, we try in our own ways. Pictures, videos, writing, art yet nothing can ever describe emotions completely. There is always that part of our experience that only we know that only we live and that only we actually feel. That is our inner truth, our unfiltered reality.

That uneasy feeling is actually our reality that we ignore, that we consistently refuse to engage in discourse with. The participation of understanding yourself, your true inner self is the first step of spirituality. It is the step that seems the most difficult because we are so used to living externally, our image our reputation, our looks, everything creating noise from the true reality of who we really are, and what our real purpose in life is or should be.

Facing anything takes courage, but facing yourself is the most daunting task of all. It is why most refuse to do so and continuously live in a state of superficial reality. We create a numbing environment full of things around us, and put value on temporary objects. Our self-worth becomes less of the inner truth, rather more about what we can project to society.

Our worth is not in our things, it is not in our relationships, it is not in our accomplishments. Our worth is something we have within, that we are born with, it is just given to us for free and that is probably why we take it for granted. It is too simple so we make it complicated that is a gift we have as human beings, to complicate simple things.

The only way to cure the uneasy feeling is to embrace it, own it, and understand it. Applying the coating of acceptance will begin to bring some peace and contentment. In an otherwise noisy world silence is the key, it is the only truth.

Scared to Date Again?

Many relationship-seekers today feel like the walking wounded. Though they’ve had more options than ever to meet potential partners, most of those relationships didn’t work out. Though still willing to try again, these still-undefeated warriors have become understandably wary. Many feel the weight of pre-defeat with its accompanying self-protection, yet have worked hard to keep their cynicism at bay. There can only be so many lost dreams before people lose their positive attitudes, even though they realize that pessimism is neither intriguing nor sexy.

Every relationship seeker I have met has a unique set of reasons for why they are still single. That individual add-up sets the scene for how much dating energy is left to risk. No one can tell another person when to try again, when to retreat, what to change, or how to approach next opportunity. There are just too many variables to create a stereotype.

What if, for instance, you are a reasonably attractive dating package who’s just been ghosted by someone you thought was in it for the long haul? You’d certainly feel a plethora of emotions. If that were you, you could feel a range of emotions from confusion, conflict, devastation, grief, insecurity, hurt, or anger. You might even feel like stalking that abandoning partner to try to find enough information to keep yourself from going crazy in an unbelievable situation. Or, perhaps you’d rush too quickly into another relationship just to find temporary solace. You might even be so off balance that you resort to self-destructive escape behaviors.

Or, what if you truly believed that you were the chosen one, only to find out that a prior flame has re-emerged and that you’re now back in a competitive race that doesn’t look good? You put a lot of energy and thought into selecting that special person and you’re weary of looking and ready to settle down. Now you feel almost powerless to stop what is going on and horrified that you may have to start all over. You are understandably reluctant to take another chance like this, yet have grown use to the joy of a committed relationship. Do you go back to being single and forever forego another commitment, or do you plunge back into that romantic abyss? Maybe you’re so disillusioned that you can’t even think about taking another chance while your heart is still occupied with the one you lost.

Were you one of those relationship partners who weren’t ready to commit just yet, but your partner was? You didn’t want to prematurely promise something you might not be able to deliver, but didn’t want to lose the chance it could eventually work out. As your partner persevered, did you abandon him or her, fearful of premature entrapment and now regret the loss of a relationship that might have eventually mattered?

Many people repeatedly pick the same kind of partners even though none of those relationships have worked out in the past. Or they haven’t really looked at what they are offering, and whether what they want is even available. Perhaps they continue to create fantasy scenarios that aren’t likely to succeed. Then, daunted by too many disappointing losses, they might settle too quickly for someone who can’t meet their standards over time. Loneliness can mask logical and effective reasoning for anyone.
Balancing all the data is not easy. Ask yourself these important questions: what are your currently available potential options? Have you recovered from past losses? Are you willing to realistically look at your marketability? Are you truly open to the actual possibilities you do have? And, are you feeling good enough about yourself to go back on the “auction block?” You need to be at your best and not repeat past errors before you open again to a committed search, and resilient if the next relationship doesn’t compensate for what you’ve lost.

No one is ready to successfully date again unless they have sufficiently healed from their prior heartbreak. Lost relationships must be grieved appropriately but should never doom the hope of a new love. Those who are still in the throes of sorrow need to wait until they can be honestly optimistic again so they can approach the next relationship ready to give it their best.

If you still feel pessimistic, cynical, insecure, defeated, anxious, angry, martyred, or exploited, you’ll be more likely to approach the next relationship warily at best. Even more worrisome, is that you will want that next relationship to make up for all the pain you’ve experienced from the last abandonment. Hyper-vigilant, you might find yourself ready to catch any hint that abandonment may be on the horizon, seeking constant reassurance from a new partner who isn’t responsible for what happened in your past.

My Holiday Wish Is For Hillary To Put Country First

Recent reports of a pending vote recount in several states leave me with great concern about a holiday season and ensuing presidential term marred by needless controversy and a badly compromised position in the world. Nothing positive can come from this recount effort and it would behoove Secretary Clinton and her apparent surrogate, Green Party candidate Jill Stein, to drop it immediately, before it does irreparable damage to the country.

In that Ms. Stein cannot win the election (and accordingly lacks what lawyers would call ‘standing’ to pursue the issue – i.e. a real stake in the outcome), it appears that this is either a fundraising ploy for the Green Party or its use by Secretary Clinton to voice her displeasure at the outcome and seek the presidency through the back door. To do so and reach 270 electoral votes, Secretary Clinton would have to overturn the result in all three states at issue – WI, PA and MI with 46 electoral votes – despite Mr. Trump’s margin being as high as 60,000 votes in PA, and holding 306 electoral votes.

Note that no one, including Secretary Clinton, has identified any actual instances of errors in vote counting. All that we have heard is that so-called experts have expressed concerns that results may not be consistent with a proper count. This is not much of a basis to subject the country and the world to the uncertainty and instability associated with a recount at this time.

“There is no smoking gun,” said George Martin, a former co-chair of the Wisconsin Green Party who’s involved in Stein’s recount effort…. “There’s not something we’re pointing to say that this is wrong in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania”. … The campaign stresses that the recounts are not to change the outcome of the results but are rather a check and balance on the process of counting votes.

At best, this effort will be a waste of the time of election officials and not interfere with transition planning efforts which are needed to ensure that the new administration is properly equipped to govern. At worst, it will cause confusion on the part of all concerned within and without the US as to who the next president will be, lead to the election unnecessarily being decided in the courts, and therefore destroy the credibility of both major candidates. It may impede a smooth transition and make the incoming administration – and the country – vulnerable to foreign threats for which it needs to prepare.

Even if the Secretary were somehow able to become president through court fiat, it is highly unlikely that she could govern effectively. The anger of those who voted for Mr. Trump, coupled with reinforcement of her ongoing reputation for sleazy practices which was extensively addressed during the campaign, would destroy her legitimacy and ability to have Americans follow her lead, and result in investigations, acrimony and chaos beyond what we have recently seen, and antithetical to any efforts to improve the lot of Americans. The same result may obtain if the recount effort gains traction and derails the transition efforts, but ultimately fails. It would be a pyrrhic victory indeed to cast doubt on the legitimacy of a Trump Administration.

The ‘principled’ arguments which I have heard in support of a recount do not hold much water. Many have pointed to the Secretary’s victory in the popular vote. Excellent argument for a constitutional amendment to do away with the Electoral College, but one which should be pursued once this election is resolved. This election was conducted for better or worse, under the constitution as it stands and its results should not be disturbed.

It has also been suggested by Ms. Stein’s camp (above) and others that the recount process should be used to test the accuracy of our election process. Fair enough, but not a cost of undermining the incoming Administration. This can be accomplished at any time prior to the next election. If the country is going to be put through the trauma associated with a recount at this time, there needs to be a smoking gun. This is NOT the time to address general concerns about the election process

Hopefully, the populace will make clear to the Secretary that even if she ‘wins’ a recount, she will lose in many ways, and cause the country great pain in the process. The best gift for our country this holiday season is an end to the most painful election in recent memory.
