After donating their daughters’ swing set, President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama got to see just how much happiness the gift brought its new owners.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Obamas visited the Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Family Shelter, the shelter that received the swing set, in Washington, D.C. The president pushed kids on the swings, while the first lady showed them how to use the rope swing.

The Obamas offered the swing set, called “Malia and Sasha’s Castle” and put up on the South Lawn of the White House in March 2009, to the Trump family, who declined. It will now be a fun spot for families at the Jobs Have Priority Shelter, which aims to “move homeless individuals from dependency to self-sufficiency by removing the barriers that prevent them from being successful.”

On its Facebook page, the team at the shelter wrote that it was “honored” the Obamas chose it as the owner of their beloved play set. The post also included the hashtag #ForeverThankful.

What happens when you’ve slowed down on social media to truly reflect where you’re heading with your business?

What happens when you feel stuck?

You haven’t spoken up in over 2 months and we all know that is forever in the online world. You’ve not posted on all your social media platforms, You haven’t recorded a video, You’ve not showed up in your own FB group! What happens to your self-esteem and your confidence when these actions take place. Well, I should really ask what happens to your self-esteem and confidence when nothing has taken place or when you are sucked into this idea that you have to be online 24-7 in order to make a dollar? Well, it can be pretty depressing to know or should I rather say “think” that you have to start all over.

“Truth is being on social media all the time does not equate to running a business or conducting business activity”

You didn’t always feel this way…You actually had some rhyme or reason to what you were doing months before but somehow you’ve experienced something called burnout. That’s what it is. I hate this term burnout. It feels so cliche, it feels like I crashed and burned and there’s no return. There’s no getting back up. But really with all these emotions and thoughts there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lesson to be learned and taught to others.

So…let me revisit those questions and share with you my answer.

What can happen when you’ve slowed down on social media?

For starters you get to reflect where you were/are heading with your business… So in my book, amazing things can happen! You begin to have a new sense of confidence and clarity. You can find a new sense of commitment to your goals and what you stand for in your business. You can begin to find your own voice again. You know what when you are constantly online being bombarded by everyone else’s messages you can begin to sound like or imitate someone you really admire. But guess what? You aren’t that person so this time away can bring about a uniqueness in you, and difference in you where you begin to stand out more in your own niche in this sea of online businesses.

What can happen when you lose your flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

Realistically you haven’t lost your flow…you had it scheduled once before. If you scheduled it before I’m sure you can refer back to your old schedule but this time with a breath of fresh ideas and opinions. You can find it on a piece of paper a word document, one of your planners. Start looking back and re-evaluating what you were doing before the burnout. You may just be in a bit of a funk…YOU personally and internally may not be in a flow but that’s ok. Begin to reconnect with your creator first, with the God who created you and listen in to your spirit and where He would have you begin. He’s given you a message for others and you know you gotta get it out to the masses. Start small. Start with an inspirational photo, feel free to reintroduce yourself. Do whatever feels right to you but whatever you do never give up because you lost your flow or feel like you don’t know where to start. I can help with that…I hope this blog post is helping with that now.

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter?

Well honey, this is more of an internal thing. If you are feeling like your voice won’t matter then guess what…it won’t. It’s not for you to determine how your story will connect with others. It’s not for you to give a consensus on the wonderful message imparted within you. Nope you don’t get to judge your message before sharing with others.

When I stepped outside of my own comfort zone and began to share my story and share what I stood for, guess what. I got an astounding…”That was powerful”. This was a mindset shift that I was sharing with other women in my group.

Did you know that I re-edited and re-edited and stressed over this message for days before I put it out. Your voice is your message and when you share it just know if you’ve touched one person you’ve done your job!!!

Conclusion

Whether you are recovering from “Burn Out” or currently experiencing it as you read this post, it’s important to remember that business is a journey and there is no race to the finish line. Brands continually evolve and grow just like we do as people. Sometimes that growth may feel stunted and other times you may experience a growth spurt. But most importantly, building a business is a journey through personal development.

A New Urine Test Could Measure How Healthy Your Diet Is

How healthy is your diet? The most specific answer you could probably muster might be something like “pretty healthy” or “not really that healthy.”

But now, a new urine test provides a more specific and reliable answer to that question, according to a small new study.

The test detects and measures the levels of certain biological markers that are created when foods such as meat, fruit and vegetables are broken down by the body after a person eats them, the researchers found. [7 Foods You Can Overdose On]

These markers can more objectively indicate whether a person eats a healthy diet — for example, one that is rich in fruits and vegetables, said lead study author Isabel Garcia-Perez, a research associate in the Imperial College London Department of Medicine. The test can be run in 5 minutes, according to the study.

In the study, the researchers asked 19 people to follow four different diets that ranged from very healthy (high in fruits and vegetables) to quite unhealthy (with lots of high-fat foods and low in fruits and vegetables). Each person in the study followed each of these four diets: They stayed at a lab, on four separate occasions, for three days at a time, and during each stay, the researchers collected the people’s urine samples in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Then, the researchers analyzed the urine samples for the various chemical compounds that are produced when the body breaks down food. Some of these compounds indicate that a person has recently eaten a certain type of food, such as red meat, chicken, fish, or fruits or vegetables. Other compounds provide an even more detailed look at a person’s diet by indicating that he or she has recently consumed specific foods, such as grapes, citrus fruits or leafy green vegetables, according to the study, published today (Jan. 12) in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.

Based on the results of their tests, the researchers created a model profile of urine compounds that indicates that a person is eating a healthy diet that’s rich in fruits and vegetables. [Pee a Rainbow: Scientist Snaps Shot of Colorful Urine]

This model urine profile can be compared with any person’s urine profile, to provide an instant indicator of how healthy the person’s diet is, the researchers said.

In their study, the researchers also tested the accuracy of the new test by looking at urine samples and dietary information from 225 people in the U.K. and 66 people in Denmark from a previous study. The researchers were able to accurately predict these people’s diets based on just their urine samples, according to the findings.

The new test could be used in research that looks at people’s dietary habits, the researchers said. Typically, the information on people’s diets that is used in studies is self-reported. In contrast, the new test provides information that is more objective and accurate, the researchers said.

However, the work on the test is still in its initial stages, and it is not commercially available yet, Garcia-Perez said. The researchers are working on developing the test further, she told Live Science. Once the test is developed further, it could also be used one day in weight-loss programs to monitor whether people are following their diets, Garcia-Perez said.

Each year, as we celebrate MLK Day and reflect on his iconic legacy, let us be reminded of his relentless fight and profound dream to have all men and women be treated equal. Perhaps no other speech sums up Dr. King’s hopes for America more perfectly than the “I Have A Dream” speech he delivered in 1963 in Washington, D.C.

Full text to the “I Have A Dream” speech:

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

In a sense we have come to our nation’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.” But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro’s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. They have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.

As we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, “When will you be satisfied?” We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied, as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro’s basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating “For Whites Only”. We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.

Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.

I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with a new meaning, “My country, ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.”

And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!

But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

MLB Player Mansplained Birth Control To Jessica Chastain, Twitter Had None Of It

Matt Garza, a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, recently took it upon himself to weigh in on women’s health care.

On Jan. 12, actress Jessica Chastain tweeted her disappointment in the Senate’s recent vote to gut the Affordable Care Act, which could force millions of women to pay for birth control out of pocket.

#BirthControl is no longer covered by health insurance,” Chastain tweeted. “Congrats USA, you’re doing your part to keep women out of the work force.”

A little over an hour later, Garza, who from what we can tell does not know Chastain personally, responded to Chastain’s tweet.

“It’s called abstinence, a word that has been forgotten amongst this generation,” the 33-year-old tweeted. “It’s the best contraceptive… #juatsaying [sic].” 

Although abstinence is indeed a contraceptive method, it is one of the least popular, with the most popular method being the birth control pill, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Research has shown that when funding is cut for women’s health services, sex education and contraceptives, people don’t abstain from having sex ― they simply have less safe sex. 

As many pointed out on Twitter, Garza, a man, is perhaps not the best spokesperson for what women should do with their bodies. Twitter users quickly joined in the conversation in Garza’s mentions:

The next day, Chastain tweeted that she will be attending the Women’s March on Washington on Saturday, Jan. 21.

“I am marching to protect the disenfranchised,” the actress tweeted. “I stand with you for reproductive choice, wage equality, and freedom from sexual violence.”

Trump’s EPA Pick Went Easy On Industry That Backed Him: Report

With his nomination hearing just a matter of days away, Environmental Protection Agency administrator nominee Scott Pruitt is facing allegations that he gave a regulatory pass to polluters who in 2010 helped elect him Oklahoma’s attorney general.

A new investigation by the Environmental Working Group advocacy organization revealed that Pruitt received more than $ 40,000 in campaign donations from executives and lawyers who represented poultry companies named in a lawsuit brought by Pruitt’s predecessor, Drew Edmondson.

That lawsuit, filed in 2005, accused the companies — including Tyson Foods — of polluting the Illinois River basin with runoff from chicken manure they were spreading over land in northeastern Oklahoma. While the lawsuit was concluded about a year before Pruitt took office, the judge never issued a ruling in the case and Pruitt never issued an appeal for the matter to be resolved.

In a comment to The Oklahoman newspaper last year, Pruitt explained his inaction on the case by saying that “regulation through litigation is wrong in my view. That was not a decision my office made. It was a case we inherited.”

In total, the EWG report noted that more than half — about $ 21,700 — of the poultry industry cash received by Pruitt’s campaign in 2010 came from Tyson executives or lawyers representing Tyson. All told, the poultry donations totaled about 4 percent of the approximately $ 1 million raised by the campaign.

That number includes $ 7,500 from Tyson’s former general counsel James Blair and his wife Nancy, $ 5,000 from former Tyson CEO and current chairman John Tyson and another $ 5,000 from former Tyson CEO and current board member Don Tyson.

In a statement issued to The Huffington Post, Tyson spokesman Worth Sparkman noted that Tyson did not, as a company, contribute to Pruitt’s campaign, but added that “our employees are encouraged to participate in the election process of public officials at all levels, and are at liberty to make personal contributions to any campaign as they see fit.”

As the EWG report notes, the contributions also preceded Pruitt’s dismantling of the Oklahoma environmental protection unit that cut the unit’s funding from $ 463,000 the year he took office to zero two years later.

While a Pruitt spokesman told the New York Times that environmental cases are still being handled by the state solicitor general’s unit, Edmondson noted to the paper that prosecution of environmental crimes in the state are still down due to the unit’s erasure. 

Ken Cook, president of the EWG, described Pruitt’s acceptance of those contributions and his action on Oklahoma’s environmental protection unit as a “disturbing” indication of his broader stance on environmental protections.

“Very clearly, this is someone coming in [to lead the EPA] with an ideology to deregulate at whatever government level he finds himself,” Cook said. “There’s no saying that ‘we just have a different philosophy’ about who should enforce environmental law. The philosophy, if it exists, is that environmental policy shouldn’t be enforced at a state or federal level. It is industry unrestrained.”

The Illinois River watershed is cleaner today than it once was. The level of phosphorous in the water decreased about 40 percent between the years 2009 and 2014, part of what an Oklahoma state official described as a “team effort” involving both Oklahoma and Arkansas officials, citizens and firms. 

Some of Pruitt’s defenders believe he deserves credit for the role he’s played in cleaning up that watershed.

One of them is former Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission administrator Ed Fite. In an op-ed published in the East Bay Times on Friday, Fite praised Pruitt for helping broker a “practical and economical” agreement on water pollution between the two states involved. 

Lincoln Ferguson, a Pruitt spokesman, pointed to that agreement in a statement provided to HuffPost as an example indicating that Pruitt “has taken extraordinary steps to protect our state’s scenic rivers” by moving the matter “past decades of unfruitful litigation.”

Still, Pruitt’s connections to agribusiness interests aren’t the only ones raising environmentalist eyebrows.

Previous reports have also detailed a close but secretive relationship between Pruitt and the oil and gas industry.

As the New York Times reported in 2014, fossil fuel companies contributed more than $ 215,000 to Pruitt’s two most recent campaigns. In addition, industry lobbyists actually drafted letters Pruitt sent to the EPA and other federal departments objecting to environmental regulations.

As Oklahoma attorney general, Pruitt has sued the EPA more than a dozen times, alleging federal overreach on matters such as the Clean Power Plan and the “waters of the U.S.” Clean Water Rule. 

The nonprofit through which Pruitt helped coordinate those lawsuits, the Rule of Law Defense Fund, also has industry ties.

The Charles and David Koch-backed Freedom Partners organization donated at least $ 175,000 to the organization, prompting six Democrats on the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works to push for details on Pruitt’s ties to the nonprofit. 

Pruitt’s nomination hearing before that committee begins Wednesday morning.

What Successful People (Who Are Actually Happy) Do Differently

Achievement rarely produces the sense of lasting happiness that you think it will. Once you finally accomplish the goal you’ve been chasing, two new goals tend to pop up unexpectedly.

We long for new achievements because we quickly habituate to what we’ve already accomplished. This habituation to success is as inevitable as it is frustrating, and it’s more powerful than you realize.

The key to beating habituation is to pursue, what researchers call, enduring accomplishments. Unlike run-of-the-mill accomplishments that produce fleeting happiness, the pleasure from enduring accomplishments lasts long after that initial buzz. Enduring accomplishments are so critical that they separate those who are successful and happy from those who are always left wanting more.

Researchers from the Harvard Business School studied this phenomenon by interviewing and assessing professionals who had attained great success. The aim was to break down what these exceptional professionals did differently to achieve both long-lasting and fulfilling success.

The researchers found that people who were both successful and happy over the long term intentionally structured their activities around four major needs:

Happiness: They pursued activities that produced pleasure and satisfaction.

Achievement: They pursued activities that got tangible results.

Significance:
They pursued activities that made a positive impact on the people who matter most.

Legacy: They pursued activities through which they could pass their values and knowledge on to others.

Lasting fulfillment comes when you pursue activities that address all four of these needs. When any one of them is missing, you get a nagging sense that you should be doing more (or something different).

The behaviors that follow are the hallmarks of people who are successful and happy because they address these four needs. Try them out and see what they do for you.

1. They are passionate.
Jane Goodall left her home in England and moved to Tanzania at age 26 to begin studying chimpanzees. It became her life’s work, and Goodall has devoted herself fully to her cause while inspiring many others to do the same. Successful, happy people don’t just have interests; they have passions, and they devote themselves completely to them.

2. They swim against the current. There’s a reason that successful and happy people tend to be a little, well, different. To be truly successful and happy, you have to follow your passions and values no matter the costs. Just think what the world would have missed out on if Bill Gates or Richard Branson had played it safe and stayed in school or if Stephen King hadn’t spent every free second he had as teacher writing novels. To swim against the current, you have to be willing to take risks.

3. They finish what they start. Coming up with a great idea means absolutely nothing if you don’t execute that idea. The most successful and happy people bring their ideas to fruition, deriving just as much satisfaction from working through the complications and daily grind as they do from coming up with the initial idea. They know that a vision remains a meaningless thought until it is acted upon. Only then does it begin to grow.

4. They are resilient. To be successful and happy in the long term, you have to learn to make mistakes, look like an idiot, and try again, all without flinching. In a recent study at the College of William and Mary, researchers interviewed over 800 entrepreneurs and found that the most successful among them tended to have two critical things in common: they were terrible at imagining failure, and they tended not to care what other people thought of them. In other words, the most successful entrepreneurs put no time or energy into stressing about their failures as they see failure as a small and necessary step in the process of reaching their goals.

5. They make their health a priority. There are an absurd number of links between your health, happiness, and success. I’ve beaten them to death over the years, but the absolute essential health habits that successful and happy people practice consistently are good sleep hygiene (fights stress, improves focus, and is great for your mood), eating healthy food (helps you to focus), and exercise (great for energy levels and confidence).

6. They don’t dwell on problems. Where you focus your attention determines your emotional state. By fixating on your problems, you create and prolong negative emotions and stress, which hinder performance. However, by focusing on actions to better yourself and your circumstances, you can create a sense of personal efficacy that produces positive emotions and improves performance. Successful, happy people don’t dwell on problems because they know that they’re most effective when they focus on solutions.

7. They celebrate other people’s successes.
Insecure people constantly doubt their relevance, and because of this, they try to steal the spotlight and criticize others in order to prove their worth. Confident people, on the other hand, aren’t worried about their relevance because they draw their self-worth from within. Instead of insecurely focusing inward, confident people focus outward, which allows them to see all the wonderful things that other people bring to the table. Praising people for their contributions is a natural result of this.

8. They live outside the box.
Successful and happy people haven’t arrived at where they are by thinking in the same way as everyone else. While others stay in their comfort-zone prisons and invest all their energy in reinforcing their existing beliefs, successful people are out challenging the status quo and exposing themselves to new ideas.

9. They keep an open mind. Exposing yourself to a variety of people is useless if you spend that time disagreeing with them and comforting yourself with your own opinions. Successful, happy people recognize that every perspective provides an opportunity for growth. You need to practice empathy by putting yourself in the other person’s shoes so that you can understand how their perspective makes sense (at least, to them). A great way to keep an open mind is to try to glean at least one interesting or useful thing from every conversation you have.

10. They don’t let anyone limit their joy.
When your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from comparing yourself to others, you are no longer the master of your own happiness. When successful, happy people feel good about something that they’ve done, they don’t let anyone’s opinions or accomplishments take that away from them. While it’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you don’t have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within. Regardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain–you’re never as good or bad as they say you are.

My commitment to ensuring a strong, coordinated, and global response to health emergencies

We live in a world at constant risk of public health emergencies. In our increasingly interconnected world, public health emergencies can affect anyone, anywhere. The recent outbreaks of Zika, Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and Yellow Fever have reminded us that disease threats are not limited to one country, one issue, or one pathogen. We saw the catastrophic impact of Ebola not only on the numbers of lives affected or lost and overwhelmed health systems but also on the economic development reversals of the affected countries. Yet Nigeria and Senegal were able to contain the outbreak rapidly due to better coordination, incident management systems, robust surveillance platforms and community engagement. One key takeaway is to ensure that each country builds the core capacities of the International Health Regulations (IHR) and ensures the safety of the public. Otherwise, the gains we have made over the past several decades can easily be undone. We must make sure that countries are encouraged, not punished, to report outbreaks and have the necessary support.

The post-Ebola landscape showed that Member States increasingly want WHO to go beyond its traditional normative role to engage and lead health aspects of emergency responses. Through the current reform of the WHO Emergency Programme, WHO is developing new operational capacities and capabilities for outbreaks and humanitarian emergencies.

Strong leadership is essential in the face of health crises. Complex public health emergencies demand a collective response with high-level political and diplomatic engagement at both the national and global levels. Local and international authorities must work together to put health at the centre of their security, economic and development agendas.

In 2009, when I was Health Minister, we re-engineered our business processes to examine the weaknesses and opportunities in our health system. Following that exercise, we established a public health emergency management system from national to district level to prevent and provide rapid response to outbreaks. We introduced basic and advanced field epidemiology training program to build capacity of surveillance officers. We also set up an emergency operation centre and its team investigated hundreds of localised outbreaks. Ethiopia is now better positioned in incident management, coordination, surveillance and diagnostic capacity.

As Foreign Minister, I had the opportunity to shape the region’s response to the Ebola epidemic, facilitating greater country ownership and promptly mobilising 200 Ethiopian health workers to join the African Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA).

In my vision statement for WHO, I emphasise the need for national preparedness to deal with health threats and build capacity. As Director-General, I will ensure strong, coordinated and rapid global responses to health emergencies by strengthening WHO’s capacity to lead by implementing and independently monitoring the newly-established WHO programme for outbreaks and health emergencies based on the ‘six ones': one programme, one line of authority, one set of emergency management processes and performance metrics, one workforce, one budget and one set of emergency business rules and processes. I will regularly monitor and engage with emerging efforts, such as the recently-established Global Health Crisis Task Force.

We must harmonise emergency responses to ensure synergy and alignment between pandemic preparedness and response efforts at the global and local levels, as well as between existing and emerging health emergency financial instruments. The number of actors in global health governance and service delivery has grown exponentially over the past two decades. This proliferation of other global health institutions is actually an opportunity, creating a multiplier effect for great impact in improving health worldwide. If elected, I will lead from the front and place WHO at the centre of global health action.

Two weeks remain before the Member States of the WHO Executive Board convene to short-list the top three candidates for Director-General. I am running because WHO has the power to make tangible and positive impact on the lives of billions of people. I believe in WHO’s mandate, I know what it takes to serve those who need the most care yet receive the least and I believe I can lead WHO to fulfil its potential.

First, I am passionate about improving the health of people around the world – and I am a firm believer that healthy populations are the cornerstone of sustainable development.

Second, I have proven experience addressing the greatest health challenges of our time at their roots at both the national and international levels. These experiences have given me the technical skills needed to be successful as Director-General.

Third, having served as Ethiopia’s Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs – as well as in several board leadership positions – I have the political leadership and diplomatic skills that WHO needs. For example, I brought together all UN Member States to agree to the Addis Ababa Action Agenda at the Third International Conference on Financing for Development in July 2015 to finance the sustainable development goals.

I truly believe that together we can create a healthier world.

Nicole Kidman is clarifying her controversial comments encouraging all Americans to accept President-elect Donald Trump in a new interview. 

The “Lion” actress came under fire this week for declaring that it’s time to support the reality-TV-host-turned-politician now that he’s been elected because “that’s what the country’s based on.”

Many considered Kidman’s statements to be dismissive of the potential problems of a Trump presidency, especially in light of her “Hours” co-star Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes appeal to “safeguard the truth” during this political moment.

“I was trying to stress that I believe in democracy and the American Constitution, and it was that simple,” she told Access Hollywood on Saturday. 

When asked to comment further on the backlash, the Oscar-actress refused to elaborate on her stance. “I’m out of it now,” she added. “That’s what I said and it’s that simple.”

Speaking with the BBC in her initial interview, Kidman explained that she was “reticent to start commenting politically” and prefers to keep her opinions about U.S. and Australian politics to herself. Kidman, who was born in Hawaii, is a dual citizen of both countries. 

However, the actress maintained that her passion for advocating for women’s rights like the fight against ovarian and breast cancer remains resolute. 

“I’m issue-based,” she said. “I’m very, very committed to women’s issues.”

Kidman is currently starring in “Lion,” which is in theaters now.

12 Things Every ‘Type A’ Person Wants You To Know

Robert Frost once said, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” He certainly wasn’t thinking about Type A people when he said that. They barrel into the office like they’re racing for a pot of gold, and they never seem to lose momentum. It’s as if they’re driven by a motor that never shuts off.

We each have our own understanding of what it means to have a Type A personality, but what does this term really mean and where did it come from? It actually started in a waiting room shared by a pair of cardiologists. The doctors noticed that their chairs didn’t have wear on the backs as expected–the wear was only visible on the front edge of the seats and the armrests, suggesting that patients were literally waiting on the edge of their seats, ready to jump up the second their names were called.

So, the cardiologists–Doctors Friedman and Rosenman–wanted to find out if the strange wear pattern on their chairs was because impatient people are more prone to heart disease. They discovered that their hunch was correct. They also found that people’s personalities tend to lean in one of two directions, which they labeled Type A and Type B.

Most think of Type A people as driven and highly strung and Type B people as carefree and even-keeled, but there’s so much more to it. Type As, in particular, are often misunderstood, as we just don’t understand the motivation behind their behavior.

To fully grasp what it means to be Type A, you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t take my word for it–let’s see what they have to say:

1. We believe that winning is the only option.
We’re really hard on ourselves. Our desire to do our best often morphs into a desire to be the best. After all, if someone else does something better than us, then we mustn’t have been trying hard enough, right? This ensures that even the most mundane activities become a competition.

2. We live and die by our goals.
We don’t do anything “just because.” There’s an end aim for everything. That morning cup of coffee? The goal is to wake up. Half an hour of Pokemon Go at lunch? It’s about squeezing in some exercise and capturing more Pokemon than our friend down the hall. Heaven help anyone who slows us down or gets in our way. We’re nothing if we don’t reach our goals.

3. We’re always stressed.
Achieving our goals is so important to us that we often get stressed out about our progress. It’s that specter of wasted time or missed opportunities hanging over our heads that gets us all riled up, which can be really hard on our emotional intelligence (EQ).

4. We squeeze something into every possible moment. It may seem hypocritical that we’re sometimes late even though the rest of the time we’re impatiently drumming our fingers, waiting for meetings to start on time. The problem is that we try to squeeze a task into every possible minute, and sometimes we overdo it. In our determination to avoid downtime, we sometimes inadvertently create downtime for other people.

5. We want you to get to the point.
Skip the long preamble; if we have questions, we’ll ask. There’s no need to waste time on the setup when you have something important to tell us–just tell us. The theme here is efficiency; we’re interested in hearing the main points so we can begin taking action.

6. We hate to wait. We don’t hate being stuck at a red light or cooling our heels in a doctor’s waiting room because we think we’re too good to wait. We just like to be efficient with our time and don’t like things getting in our way. Every minute spent waiting is a minute we could have spent doing something productive. It’s a minute that we’ll never get back.

7. We’re conscientious.
Like “later,” “good enough” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Things are either right or they’re wrong. And they always, always have to be right. No matter what we’re doing, we care too much to settle for mediocrity.

8. We multitask. We’re not being rude, and we’re not bored. We just have a sense that the value of our day is measured by how much we get done, and we accomplish more when we do two (or more!) things at once.

9. We have a tough time relaxing. Relaxation isn’t a measurable goal, and it feels like a waste of time when nothing is getting done. It’s very difficult for us to sit around and “just be”; instead, we prefer to be actively “becoming” whatever lies at the end of our current ambition. Anything else amounts to lost time.

10. We have an unrealistic sense of urgency. From our perspective, “now” is the only time that exists. There’s no sense in putting something off till another time. While that’s often a good thing, we tend to give trivial issues a greater sense of urgency than they deserve.

11. We follow a schedule. Our time is carefully orchestrated so that each day we accomplish what we intended. Again like “later,” “whenever” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Everything gets scheduled and added to lists, and we take great satisfaction in ticking all the boxes.

12. We’re restless. Our motors are always running, so when we have to idle, that excess energy manifests in various nervous habits, such as fidgeting or biting our nails. Don’t worry, we’re not freaking out. This is normal behavior for us.

Bringing It All Together

We know that we can be awfully hard on everybody, but we’re even harder on ourselves. This may be difficult to see because no one else is privy to the perfectionist that’s goading or berating our every move inside our heads. Just know this: We care–we care a lot–and we really are sorry if our personality makes us hard to get along with sometimes.

GOP Governors Privately Urging Congress To Reconsider Full Obamacare Repeal

As congressional Republicans move forward on plans to quickly repeal and ― less-quickly ― replace President Barack Obama’s health care law, a wide variety of industry and political influencers are trying to slow their progress. Among the most persuasive may be a set of Republican governors who are fearful about losing the substantial health and monetary benefits from the law that their states currently enjoy.

On Friday morning, Politico reported on five such GOP governors who have been publicly calling on lawmakers to consider keeping the portion of the Affordable Care Act that supports the expansion of Medicaid in states that choose to.

Behind the scenes, these same governors are also working to persuade lawmakers from their states and those who have purview over the repeal and replace strategy that it would be wise to keep some portion of the federal matching funds for states that have pursued Medicaid expansion.

Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio), for one, is set to meet with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) as well as other committee members next week to discuss his concerns about full repeal, a source close to Kasich confirmed. Gov. Rick Snyder (R-Mich.), meanwhile, has been in talks with members of Michigan’s delegation as well as President-elect Donald Trump’s transition staff about maintaining his state’s Medicaid expansion program.

“He also has been open to discussing with them other ideas they may have regarding changes to the ACA,” Snyder spokesman Ari Adler said. “Too often, it seems that the ACA gets reported on as an all-or-nothing package, but there are many separate components that exist. In Michigan’s case, we took the idea of Medicaid expansion, made it our own, improved it and made it work better. But, as you know, everything is up for discussion and the Governor is happy to have those discussions.”

Kasich and Snyder aren’t the only Republican governors who run states that have expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Nor are they the only ones who have warned about the potential losses in coverage or budgetary holes that might come if the law is repealed. Gov. Charlie Baker (R-Mass.), Asa Hutchinson (R-Ark.) and Brian Sandoval (R-Nev.) have offered similar concerns. And Democratic governors from Medicaid-expansion states have also been in touch with their congressional delegations in hopes of convincing them to pump the brakes on ACA repeal.

Gov. Tom Wolf (D-Penn.) told The Huffington Post that he’s sent individualized letters to each member of the delegation detailing the consequences for their districts and state of taking Obamacare off the books: chief among them being 700,000 Pennsylvanians potentially losing their coverage, community hospitals facing a massive financial crunch and a drop in services for those dealing with substance abuse. For the past few weeks, Wolf has also barnstormed the state, meeting with health care officials and constituents dependent on the law, to discuss what a post-Obamacare landscape would look like. It is those conversations ― and the subsequent ability to convey the real-world impact of repeal ― he said, that made him and other governors effective advocates for trying to keep parts (if not all) of Obamacare in place.

“I think all they [Kasich and Snyder] are doing is what a good lobbyist is supposed to do which is explain the facts,” Wolf said. “We are telling our delegations, ‘Here are the facts. This is what is going to happen. Are you willing to face those consequences if you do this?’”

So far, Republican lawmakers appear to be willing to face those consequences. As HuffPost’s Matt Fuller reported, the House appears poised to have a majority of lawmakers supporting wiping Obamacare off the books. The dynamics in the Senate are less certain, since all Democrats need to do (assuming they vote uniformly) is convince three Republicans to cross the aisle. But with Trump now fully embracing repeal, lawmakers on the Hill feel additional pressure to place their focus on the replacement instead.

Should it get to that point, there is a possibility that some of the Medicaid expansion may be restored, albeit in a reduced size and scope (think: coverage for those up to 80 or 100 percent of the poverty line, rather than 133.). But while that might attract Democratic votes, it wouldn’t be a simple legislative gambit. Lawmakers would need to find a way to pay for it. And keeping items like the reductions in Medicare spending and some of the Affordable Care Act’s tax hikes would prove to be far less politically popular.

Winter

Winter is a three-month period of time that represents a pause in the activity of life. Great lakes, ponds, and streams freeze over; the earth grows hard and unreceptive. Tree sap stops flowing. Even the air becomes dense, slow to move, and heat stealing. Yet, not everything is as it appears to be!

The pervasive stillness and deep silence of winter are powers every bit as great as are the explosive forces of spring and summer, only different. After all, what is a glacier but a vast frozen river crawling its way through time? Both are forms of water whose unstoppable might can carve their way through solid rock! So, how can we channel this power of winter and use it to let go of whatever stands between us and the higher life we desire?

Winter is the time of the year when the forces of nature assume their most passive form. But we are discovering here that passive does not mean powerless! Consider the micro-pause between each beat of the heart. Is the heart less alive, made less potent for the brief rest it takes in its own beating? Of course not! In each such moment of its repose we could just as easily say that it is gathering itself for its next pulsation. In other words, its temporary passive state is actually a measured act of preparation. So it is with the “heart” of winter.

The better we understand this unique power of being passive–and how it serves as the secret consort of all things active–the more we grow in the faith we need to be wisely passive toward whatever fears remain in us about letting go of our false self. This is why, during the dark days of winter, we should take time each day–as often as possible–to quietly return to the living Light that dwells in the center of ourselves.

By gathering our attention in this way, and bringing the whole of ourselves into the heart of this interior stillness, we not only collect our own forces, as nature herself is doing, but much more: in this deliberate act of gathering ourselves–and for the conscious sense of quiet contentment we find within it–we are also being released from the false idea that the source of our strength and security can be found somewhere outside us.

The great French author, philosopher, and Nobel Prize winner, Albert Camus, knew the power of this truth now revealed. He also realized its liberating potential. In the following carefully chosen words, see how beautifully he tells us not to fear any season of life wherein we find ourselves feeling empty, alone, or without any Light in our life. He writes: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer.”

Once we start to see, to know in our innermost heart, that life itself is already complete, we can let go of whatever–or whoever–would have us believe otherwise.

Old attachments and their long-standing aches are now seen for being what they have always been: appendages of days gone by, worthless to the Higher Self we have agreed to become and by whose stillness we realize this need for a wholly new valuation of our own soul.

Now is the season to die to discontent, to withdraw our consent to live with any thoughts or feelings that would convince us it’s necessary to live in conflict or confusion.

The winter season can be the most challenging in terms of learning to channel its powers to help us let go. But, we may also have this timeless assurance: we are really created to enter into the perfect stillness from which we came. And for our return home–by entering into the bare infinity that is the center of our True Self–we arrive where we have always longed to be … without ever having had to set out. Here we make this last, glad discovery: the task of letting go, of separating ourselves from who and what we need no longer be, has already been done for us.

If We’re Going To Change The World, Living Off The Grid Isn’t Enough

When author Mark Sundeen set out to write his latest book, he thought he would be telling a story of Americans living off the grid, eschewing conveniences like electricity and cellphones for “the simple life.”

But it wasn’t long before Sundeen began to question his premise. Decamping to the countryside and living off the land, he suspected, was neither as straightforward nor as revolutionary as Americans daydreaming of tiny houses, solar panels and vegetable gardens might think. Rather than looking for people avoiding the institutions they abhorred, he decided to seek people actively working to create new norms.

That pivot led Sundeen to the three families at the heart of The Unsettlers: In Search of the Good Life in Today’s America, published this week. The families, living in Victor, Montana; La Plata, Missouri; and Detroit, share visions of an American dream stripped of most luxuries. And instead of just talking about it, they’re actually doing it.

The author shows the triumph and struggle in the families’ quests. But above all, their stories display tenacity and perseverance that is, at times, hard to imagine in the face of great challenges and sacrifices. 

The Huffington Post recently spoke with Sundeen about his work, and why — in today’s world — its message of grit is perhaps more timely than ever.

What inspired you to go about writing this book — to find these people who have turned to living off the land and off the grid?

Basically, the book is about families with children who are living in ethical dissent to the economy and the government, and doing so in a way that they don’t lose their mind or soul. In fact, they find joy in what they do. I guess the joy part of it is important because if you look at the problems we face as a society — from war to racism to species extinction — you tend to feel so helpless. Part of the reason you feel so helpless is because we feel entirely dependent on the industries that are destroying us.

We hate the banks, we hate Wall Street, but we’re the bank’s customers. We have mortgages, credit cards and bank accounts that enrich the banks.  We hate Big Ag and GMOs and soil depletion, but unless we’re growing our own food, it’s pretty hard to extract yourself from that system. And we might hate the oil companies and global warming, but everything we touch in our society is either made of or delivered by oil. So how do we go from there without being completely depressed? The people I was after were not those who just dropped out, but those who were trying to invent innovative systems to replace those.

How did you find these people who are innovating?

Once I met all three of the families, I knew they were the ones who told the stories I wanted to tell, and in most cases were telling a story I hadn’t even heard of yet. Ironically, I found the couple in Missouri that didn’t use the internet or any electricity or cellphones after posting a note on Facebook looking for people living off the grid with children. Through a series of contacts and connections, I was given their landline phone number and I called them up. The Montana family was easiest to find because they were friends of friends and I was living in Missoula at the time.

I found the Detroit family as I started to meet and interview people you might call “preppers” living in rural America. They were largely white and privileged, and they were sort of preparing for the collapse. But I started to think the collapse has already arrived in places like New Orleans and Detroit, and the people who suffer are not white, middle-class, educated preppers. They are largely poor people of color.

How is what these families are doing different from off-grid living?

When I got started, I thought the book would be about people living off the grid, which turned out to be the least interesting thing about them. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, off the grid meant living in dissent with the global economy. Today, you can be off the grid in a solar-powered house and, like, trading stocks on the internet. I realized that being off the grid was not a big deal in terms of transforming society.

America has this ethos that you can have whatever you want and live the dream, but these people say, “No, you can’t have it all.” And by deliberately choosing not to have it, they might be more rich in a non-material way.

So much of the book centers around food. You spent a lot of time with these families and shared a number of meals. Did you have a favorite one?

The first meal that pops to mind is one I had with the Possibility Alliance [in Missouri]. Every Friday, Ethan [Hughes] would have a big feast and he cooks this amazing spread with roasted peppers and fresh greens. What was memorable about it was that they had fresh beef from their neighbor, and since they don’t have refrigeration, the only way they could get beef is if their neighbor kills a cow and walks over across the street and asks if they want some beef.

It was a truly local meal in every sense because these people don’t have chocolate and coffee and condiments. There were just some Concord grapes off the vine and some berries and then dessert with fresh cream that had just been pulled from the cows and sweetened with honey.

I think the sort of food movement has become mixed up as a luxury item, as something that fancy people do because they have snooty taste. But of course, it’s actually the opposite. It’s not about consumption, it’s about production. And that was evidenced by this meal, where everything had come from either their land or their neighbors’ land.

Speaking of the food movement, the families you interviewed all had a complex relationship with it. Why do you think that is?

The local food movement began as a sort of changing of the means of production, of using appropriate technology. Now, it’s transformed into this elitist sort of consumption. It’s like you want to eat whatever fresh garlic scapes, organic kohlrabi or whatever exotic vegetables you can find. In some ways, it’s become its own enemy.

As Luci [Brieger] mentioned [in the book], if you’re buying organic grapes flown in from Peru in the middle of winter, you’ve missed the entire point. It’s true you’re not eating any pesticides, but you’re causing this plane to fly grapes from South America. It’s insane.

I was also fascinated that Greg and Olivia [Willerer] refused to deal with Whole Foods, which so many people saw coming to Detroit as a huge victory because fresh, organic, healthy food had arrived in a food desert. But to them, it was just a corporation sucking money out of Detroit and putting it into shareholder pockets.

The current political climate seems to provide a particularly interesting backdrop to this idea of creating alternative ways of living. Obviously, you couldn’t quite anticipate that.

I definitely had no idea when I was writing this that Donald Trump would be president and, sadly, this book has become much more relevant now. Writing this during the Obama age, I thought a fair criticism of these people would be that they’re like Chicken Little, thinking the world is so terrible that we have to create a new one. But I think millions more of people are suddenly saying we live in a corrupt petrostate in which our government is taking an active role in destroying our world, so how can we fight it, resist it and stop it? It seemed very prophetic to me.

What do you hope people will take away from reading this book?

I hope the book is totally inspiring to people, though I don’t think many people who read this will follow the path these people did. They didn’t just one day decide to do this, they spent 10, 15, 30 years gradually getting to where they are now. To farm on vacant lots in Detroit, these people have to love it. 

This is their dream, and they have the courage, the willpower and the strength to do it. I’m not totally sure that what they’re doing is replicable on a large scale, but in these times where we feel so powerless and we can’t even make basic, free-will decisions to live ethical and meaningful lives, I’m inspired by the people who have the courage to pursue these dreams that seem nuts to everyone else. Watching them might inspire other people to at least say, hey, I might not be able to live without electricity, but I might get out of debt or stop using so much oil and gas.

Religious Leaders Bless Planned Parenthood Health Center And Its Mission

Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and secular leaders gathered inside Planned Parenthood Metro Washington’s new Carol Whitehill Moses health center on Tuesday to perform a blessing of the space. 

The event, co-hosted by the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, included interfaith blessings, prayers, and testimonies about why it was important ― politically and spiritually ― for women to have autonomy over their own bodies.

Dr. Laura Meyers, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, told The Huffington Post that it’s crucial for Americans to hear these progressive voices of faith speak up for women.

“Having a group of interfaith clergy perform a ceremony focused on unity and wholeness therefore takes on special meaning to empower and celebrate rather than to stigmatize, control and dehumanize,” Meyers said in a statement released to HuffPost. “Having such a ceremony take place at this moment in history is especially powerful for us as we seek to mobilize our communities of different faiths to come together to affirm and support the reproductive freedoms we cherish and have fought so hard to achieve.” 

The ceremony comes at a time when many progressive women feel that their access to safe and affordable reproductive care is under attack. Emboldened by president-elect Donald Trump’s victory, Republicans in Congress are pushing forward with plans to strip Planned Parenthood of its federal funding. House Speaker Paul Ryan announced last week that this provision will be included in a special bill Republicans are preparing that seeks to repeal Obamacare.

Planned Parenthood health centers provide a range of health care services for both men and women ― including testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and screening for cervical and other cancers. The Carol Whitehill Moses Center in DC opened in September and is expected to provide care for more than 12,000 people within its first year.

Conservative Christian opponents of Planned Parenthood have long sought to defund it because its centers perform abortions.

Meyers said that the conversation about religion and reproductive health has been dominated by the “religious right” ― despite the fact that clergy played a role in the abortion rights movement.

Faith-based movements defending a woman’s right to choose have existed since before the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalized abortion in the United States.

“Regardless of the long history of connection between clergy and Planned Parenthood as well as the clergy’s role in the abortion rights movement more generally, those on the right seek to separate those of us in the reproductive rights movement from a sense of deep spirituality and religious connection,” Meyer said. “Their binary moral framework leaves no space for individual questions of conscience nor the moral ambiguity that is an inevitable fact of life.”

The interfaith leaders at Tuesday’s event believe it’s time to change that narrative.

Rev. Dr. Christine Y. Wiley, co-pastor of Washington, D.C.’s Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ, helped to plan and coordinate the interfaith blessing ceremony. She told The Huffington Post that her faith inspired her to support a woman’s right to choose.

“Many people do not understand that there are many kinds of Christians. Conservative Christians dominate the television and Radio media and influence people to think that this brand of Christianity ‘is’ Christianity. Although they have great influence, this stance is far from representing the true tenets of the person of Jesus Christ,” Wiley said. “As a progressive Womanist Christian who is concerned about wholeness in the community, especially for those who are marginalized and disenfranchised, my task is to do what Jesus did, to meet people where they are with love and understanding, and bring healing and freedom to them.”

Four Uncommon Ways to Clear Your Mind and Make Big Decisions

Decision-fatigue refers to the phenomenon that, like willpower, our ability to make decisions throughout the day diminishes without proper recharging. When mid-Pivot and asking life’s biggest questions, we are often overwhelmed by smaller decisions and things that might not have registered on our radar in the past. Or conversely, we’re so bogged down by small day-to-day decisions that we don’t have the space to ask bigger Pivot questions about what we really want and what next steps would resonate most.

To refresh your mind, I recommend the following:

  • Don’t ask the same giant questions every day (ie: Should I quit my job?). Give yourself a period of time where you don’t have to decide at all, perhaps while you’re researching options. Revisit the decision at specific intervals of your choosing, but not on a daily monkey-mind basis.
  • Create routines for as much as you can in your life – morning routines, scheduling exercise for the same recurring days/times, evening wind down rituals. What recharges you? The more you can create routines around these things, the less you will find yourself debating what to do when throughout the day (gobbling up precious mental bandwidth).
  • Write your questions down.
  • Go with your gut! We actually do know the answer to more than we think – on decisions large and small. If you find yourself debating unproductively, ask: what does my gut say?

Your Drunken Urge For Pizza And Wings, Explained By Science

Anyone who’s ever had a lot to drink probably knows the feeling: You want to chow down on pizza, fast food or other grub — and probably a lot of it. Now, a new study in mice may offer a possible explanation for this desire to overeat: Alcohol may activate some of the brain cells that normally make people feel hungry.

Although the study was conducted in mice, the findings likely apply to people as well because humans have the same types of neurons in their brains as the neurons the researchers focused on in the study, said Jessica R. Barson, an assistant professor of neurobiology at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, who was not involved in the study.

Previous research has shown that people tend to overeat after drinking alcohol — a phenomenon dubbed “the apéritif effect” — but it was not clear what the potential biological reasons for this link might be. The effect was particularly puzzling considering that alcohol has a high number of calories per gram, “and calorie intake usually suppresses brain appetite signals,” the authors wrote in the study, published Jan. 4 in the journal Nature Communications. In the new study, the researchers examined the effect of alcohol consumption on food intake in a group of mice, in what the scientists called an “alcoholic weekend” experiment. The researchers injected the mice with alcohol over three days. To serve as a comparison, they injected the mice with saline over the three days before and the three days after the alcohol injections. The researchers gave the mice access to the same amounts of food and water throughout the study.

The researchers found that the rodents ate significantly more food on the days when they were injected with alcohol.

This finding is in line with the results of a study in humans published in 2015 in the journal Obesity, which also found a link between alcohol consumption and eating more food.

The researchers also looked at the mice’s brains throughout their experiments, and found that certain brain cells, called Agrp neurons, that normally promote hunger were activated after the mice were injected with alcohol but not after they were injected with saline. Moreover, when the researchers artificially inhibited the activity of those neurons in the mice, the mice stopped overeating, the researchers found.

The researchers concluded that alcohol may help to sustain what the researchers call “false starvation alarms” in the brain. In other words, it may make the mice feel that they are hungry even though they are getting calories from the alcohol itself, according to the findings.

However, the study had certain limitations, Barson noted. For example, the researchers injected the mice with alcohol, and did not arrange for them to drink the alcohol voluntarily, which is the usual mode of alcohol consumption in humans, she said.

“Nobody injects themselves with alcohol,” Barson told Live Science. “We drink alcohol.” Though the researchers likely used the injection method to ensure that the mice received equal doses of alcohol, the injection procedure might have exerted stress on the mice, which could have affected the results, she said. That’s because “stress can change the brain and behavior in powerful ways,” Barson said. For example, it can affect how much we eat, and it can even activate Agrp neurons, she said.

Rex Tillerson Says Exxon Mobil Didn’t Lobby Against Sanctions. Public Records Suggest Otherwise

WASHINGTON ― Former Exxon Mobil chief executive Rex Tillerson testified under oath during his secretary of state confirmation hearing Wednesday that he had no knowledge of his company lobbying lawmakers against sanctions.

Public records show that between 2006 and 2014, while Tillerson was leading oil giant, firms representing Exxon Mobil repeatedly lobbied members of Congress on sanctions legislation targeting Iran and Russia that could hurt the company’s business.

Confronted by Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) an architect of several Congressional sanctions bills targeting Iran, Tillerson denied that the lobbying took place.

“I never lobbied against sanctions,” said Tillerson. “To my knowledge, Exxon Mobil never directly lobbied against sanctions.”

Between January and June of 2010, as lawmakers debated imposing sanctions against foreign banks that did business with Iran, two firms representing Exxon Mobil filed paperwork disclosing lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill. The firms were focused on HR 2194, a sanctions bill that became law on July 1, 2010.

Sanctions proponents credit that legislation with contributing to strain on Tehran’s economy and helping to force the country to negotiate significant concessions to its nuclear program.

In 2014, Exxon Mobil again dispatched a lobbyist to Capitol Hill, this time to discuss with lawmakers proposed measures towards Russia in retaliation for its military incursion into Ukraine.

“I think you called me at the time!” Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said during the confirmation hearing.

Despite submitting lobbying disclosure paperwork, Exxon Mobil disputes that its activity qualified as “lobbying” against sanctions. In a statement to The Huffington Post, the oil company said it “provided information about impact of sanctions, but did not lobby against sanctions.”

Exxon tweeted a similar statement Wednesday afternoon

Not all committee members were convinced. “In your mind, calling a United States senator to express your belief that sanctions are not effective is not lobbying,” Murphy said. “In my view, that is a distinction without a difference.”

While heading the company, Tillerson was upfront about his skepticism of economic sanctions against foreign adversaries. “We do not support sanctions, generally, because we don’t find them to be effective unless they are very well implemented comprehensibly, and that’s a very hard thing to do,” he said at the company’s 2014 annual meeting.

On Wednesday, Tillerson would not commit to supporting sanctions against Russia in response to the Kremlin’s alleged role in election-related hacking. “Giving the executive the tool is one thing; requiring the executive to use it, without any other considerations, I would have concerns about,” he said.

Relationships That Have Roots are the Anchors in Our Lives

The view in my backyard is a conservation area full of various types of trees. As the seasons pass, the trees lose their leaves and even some of their branches, but the trees remain in large part due to their sturdy roots.

To the side of my house is a concrete light pole. It doesn’t have any leaves and branches, obviously, but it is more susceptible to being blown down during a violent storm because it lacks the strong roots that mature trees have to anchor them through a storm.

When I compare and contrast the tree and the pole, I know I would much rather be a tree.

Both trees and light poles stand above the blanket of shrubs and bushes below. However, this is where the similarities end.

Many light poles are inorganic entities of concrete or metal, created through some form of human intervention. The shape and size in which these poles are created will forever be their shape and size as inorganic entities will not change during their existence unless there is additional intervention.

Trees, on the other hand, are organic. They are living organisms that continually change. They will lose and gain leaves and branches but they will also grow and mature throughout their existence. Continual growth and development is what I want for my own life. This is why I would rather be a tree than a light pole.

Unfortunately, positive growth sometimes must come from negative changes. Each year trees weather the change of seasons. With those changes in season, leaves come and they go and sometimes there may be seasons when the trees may not have any leaves at all on their branches.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that become attached to you as much as leaves are attached to branches. However, as the seasons change in our lives those people may disappear. Sometimes it seems several disappear at once and you are left bare much like trees in winter. For whatever reasons, those individuals were only meant to be in your life for a season. Yes, it hurts when those who you thought were going to stay forever leave your life before you are ready, but it is the nature of our organic lives.

Unfortunately, you never know how strong any branch will be until it is tested in the most violent of storms. Some branches appear thick and sturdy while they may actually be hollow or rotten to the core. If you step out on the branch for support because of its sturdy appearance, you might be disappointed and shocked when that branch does not support you but breaks and hurts you instead.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that we have relied upon and with whom we have built a long-term relationship. We have truly let them into our lives. However, as the weight of whatever burden you need bared by them increases, that friend gives under the load and breaks away from you in a permanent and irrevocable manner. Yes, it hurts but just as leaves come for a reason during a season, branches are there for those life-long lessons that we will take with us long after the branches have broken and been swept away. That is the nature of our organic lives.

So based on this, you might now be wondering why I would choose to be a tree instead of a pole. One word: roots!

Because trees are organic living creatures their roots continue to grow and strengthen as the tree grows and matures. When a storm comes, the roots anchor trees and allow trees to bend but not break in the storm.

Poles do not have that same anchor support. That is why we see more poles than trees down after severe hurricanes.

The same can be said for our own lives. Think about those individuals in your life that have been your anchor and support through the good and the bad. Often, much like a tree’s roots, those individuals do all of their work out of the view of others with no need of public acknowledgement. They are the blessings that we cannot overlook in our lives.

After comparing and contrasting the two, if I had to choose I would rather be a tree if it means that I will continue to have the blessings of roots just waiting to support me and feed me as I work to develop and mature throughout my existence.

The inexplicable agony of stepping on a Lego is a familiar sensation to parents. In fact, it’s so widespread (and so painful) that people have developed special Lego-resistant slippers.

But why is it so painful? Simon Whistler of YouTube’s “Today I Found Out” channel sought to discover the answer

“As anyone who’s done it knows, stepping on a Lego block is something akin to being shot in the foot by a knife soaked in bullet ant venom,” Whistler explains in his video. “In truth, this is an inherent danger of allowing a child to exist in your home.”

According to the video, there are several factors at play: the sensitivity of human feet due to large numbers of nerves, the sturdiness of Lego products, their somewhat jagged structure, etc.

Democrats Ramp Up Ethics Attack On Trump’s Top Health Pick

WASHINGTON ― Congressional Democrats are signaling they won’t let Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) sail to confirmation as secretary of Health and Human Services for the incoming Trump administration.

Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), who co-authored a five-year-old law governing investments by members of Congress and requiring public disclosure of their transactions, on Tuesday asked the Securities and Exchange Commission to look into whether Price used inside information he obtained as a member of Congress to enrich himself.

“Congressman Price made hundreds of stock trades since those disclosures first became mandatory in 2012,” Slaughter wrote in a letter to the SEC. “The fact that these trades were were made and in many cases timed to achieve significant earnings or avoid losses would lead a reasonable person to question whether the transactions were triggered by insider knowledge.”

Slaughter’s move follows a call last week by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) for the House Office of Congressional Ethics to conduct a similar investigation before Price’s confirmation can proceed. The consumer advocacy group Public Citizen formally filed a request with that office on Thursday.

Democrats haven’t provided any evidence that Price, the physician and six-term congressman tapped by President-elect Donald Trump for the Cabinet position, has violated the STOCK Act or any other laws. The STOCK Act permits members of Congress to make investments in the stock market so long as they report them, which Price did.

“With yet another politically motivated attack on Dr. Price, Democrats are showing just out of touch they are with the American people. The election is over. These charges are laughable. It is time for both parties to come together and address our nation’s serious problems, including enacting genuine patient-centered health reforms,” Phil Blando, a spokesman for the Trump transition, wrote in an email to The Huffington Post.

According to a December report in The Wall Street Journal, Price made more than $ 300,000 in trades of health care companies affected by legislation he worked on or voted on over the past four years.

The Department of Health and Human Services touches nearly every part of the health care system through payments from programs like Medicare and Medicaid and regulations on health care companies.

What are some things you realize as you get older? Doing one thing great is better than doing ten things well. They teach you the opposite in high school (unless you are a star basketball player). In high school, the most important academic statistic is your GPA (Grade Point Average). Of course, averages are almost always terrible statistics because they weigh everything the same.

Just because you got a C in history, doesn’t mean your life is over. And just because you get As in everything doesn’t mean you are set-up to be great. In fact, if you get As on everything you might end up being a very high-functioning cog instead of focusing your talents.

Adolescence is a wonderful time to explore new things. It’s a good time to try lots of things and see what speaks to you. At some point in one’s life you need to eliminate options and focus on a grander strategy at becoming great.

Understand the Venn Diagram overlap of (1) things you like to do; (2) things you are excellent at; and (3) things that will be treasured in the future. Of course, predicting #3 is very hard to do for some things (but, actually, for many things it is surprisingly easy).

My other piece of advice is to under-optimize on prestige and brand. Optimizing for being great at something means you likely are going to an important area that has less competition. If everyone you know is trying to get a job at the same place or get the same fellowship, that might mean it is overvalued and you should be zigging when those around you are zagging.

Doctors are taught that it is important to finish out a course of antibiotics, and they dutifully relay this information to their patients. But the determination of therapy duration is usually based on almost no evidence at all. This is especially true for our understanding of the risk of the development of resistance, which is rarely a measured outcome in the clinical testing of antibiotics. As one review of the subject puts it “Therapy duration is one of the major understudied areas of infectious diseases therapeutics.” [1]. The truth is that in almost no cases do we have a firm evidentiary basis for optimizing therapy duration of antibiotics.

How can this be so? How can something that every conscientious practitioner of medicine “knows” be based on no evidence? There are several drivers responsible for these gaps in our knowledge:

  • Antibiotics are too effective. The gold standard in clinical trial design is the placebo-controlled randomized trial. But soon after antibiotics were introduced, it became obvious that withholding antibiotic treatment from a control group was unethical, as it exposed them to a high risk of disease and death. Few placebo-controlled trials of antibiotics have been performed since 1950. Instead, a new antibiotic agent is compared to an existing one, and if it appears no worse than the existing agent, it is deemed “non-inferior” and is approved on that basis.
  • Antibiotics are too safe. Most antibiotics, particularly the ß-lactams like penicillin and cephalexin, are very well tolerated. Adverse events are rare, and are fairly minor – diarrhea and allergies are the principal side effects. Thus there is little incentive to minimize either the dose or the duration of antibiotic treatment, and few trials are designed to do so.
  • Suppressing resistance is not a priority. The typical end-points for trials of antibiotics are patient cure/improvement and microbiological eradication. Monitoring the fraction of resistant bacteria in an infection during or after a course of treatment is rarely done.
  • The development of resistance is usually quantal, not incremental. The “finish your course” treatment paradigm is based an implicit assumption: that resistance develops in a series of steps that cumulatively ramp up resistance levels from zero to weakly to moderately to fully resistant. This certainly happens in the lab, but it is not the dominant mode of resistance acquisition in the clinic. Instead, there is a tiny fraction – maybe one in a million or less – of fully resistant bacteria already present in the infection. The continued use of antibiotics gives this subpopulation the advantage that they need in order to outcompete the susceptible population:

Recognizing that overlong courses of antibiotics are likely to promote the development of resistance, some doctors are working to develop algorithms that reduce antibiotic exposure. Jean Chastre’s group in Paris has shown that procalcitonin levels can be used to discontinue antibiotic therapy in pneumonia patients without impacting patient outcomes [2]. Others have shown that short-course therapy is just as effective as standard courses for intra-abdominal infections [3] and Strep throat [4].

Antibiotics should always be taken as prescribed. Although we rarely know that a given treatment duration is optimal, we do at least have some evidence that it is safe and effective. Some evidence is always better than none. As the drawbacks to antibiotic use become more evident – increased risk of resistance, obesity, diabetes, and inflammatory diseases – there is more interest in limiting antibiotic exposure in clinical practice. We can expect to see more studies which indicate that less is often more in antibiotic use.

Khizr Khan Urges Senators To Reject Jeff Sessions For Attorney General

WASHINGTON ― Gold Star father Khizr Khan urged the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday to vote against the nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) to be attorney general.

The father of Capt. Humayun S.M. Khan, an American soldier and Muslim who was killed in the Iraq War while saving the lives of several members of his unit, rose to national prominence last year at the Democratic National Convention. Appearing on stage alongside his wife, Khizr Khan held up a small copy of the U.S. Constitution and called on Trump to respect the values enshrined within it.

Khan, a lawyer, laid out his case against Sessions in a letter he sent to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday. Sessions’ nomination for a federal judgeship failed in the same Senate committee in 1986 over allegations that he made racist statements.

“Thirty years ago, a bipartisan group of senators rejected Mr. Sessions’ nomination to be a federal judge. His record since then does not give us any reason to believe that those senators were in error,” Khan wrote.

The “most minimal standard for leading the Department of Justice must be a demonstrated commitment to pursuing justice for all Americans,” Khan argued. “Mr. Sessions fails to meet that standard.”

He went on to list several objections to Sessions, including the senator’s opposition to the full Voting Rights Act, his comments in support of President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed Muslim ban and his criticisms of groups like the NAACP and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Khan, who is Pakistani-American, was particularly alarmed that the Justice Department could be “led by someone who has cultivated close relationships with organizations that promote racial and religious divisiveness and hostility toward immigrants” ― a possible reference to Sessions’ ties to Breitbart.com, a news site that traffics in white nationalist sentiment.

“My son, US Army Captain Humayun Khan, was a living rebuke to such bigotry,” Khan wrote. “He gave his life in service to this country, earning a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his heroism. He, like the people of every gender, ethnicity, and religion whose bodies rest in Arlington National Cemetery, which include FIVE Muslim Soldiers, swore an oath to protect the Constitution.”

Sessions could face a tough confirmation hearing. Democrats are gearing up to grill the Alabama senator over his controversial immigration stance and views on racial issues during that hearing, which begins Tuesday. According to Politico, Democratic senators are pushing to have Congressional Black Caucus members testify, including Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a civil rights icon.

Sen. Pat Leahy (D-Vt.), a former chairman of the Judiciary Committee, also voiced his opposition to Sessions’ nomination in a Boston Globe op-ed published Monday. His public disapproval is especially notable given that he still serves on that committee, alongside Sessions.

“Sessions has repeatedly stood in the way of efforts to promote and protect Americans’ civil rights,” Leahy wrote.

The trick to finding balance

Balance is the Holy Grail of 21st century living.

Nobody sought balance back in the 1800s or even the 1950s. Back in the Old Days people sought to cultivate traits like virtue (huh?), patience, forgiveness, altruism, objectivity and a kind temperament.

Men worked in the world. Women worked at home. Balance was an unspoken fact of life. Only accountants and tightrope walkers in the circus actually worried about it consciously.

Nowadays balance is a big deal. Why? Because we’re so freakin’ out of balance.

Whole fields of scientific study have arisen from our imbalance. Food scientists weigh in on the proper balance of fruits, dairy, vegetables and proteins to consume on a daily basis. And a fat lot of good that’s done us. We’re more gi-normous than ever.

Sixty years ago kids walked to school, ran everywhere and played outdoors until dark. Adults did a lot of physical work. In 1950 only 10 percent of Americans were obese. Not anymore.

Seventy years ago we ate nourishing whole foods, unprocessed grains and cereals, butter, whole eggs, meats, fish and poultry and there were no organic sections in the stores because everything already was organic.

Not anymore.

Now 80 percent of all calories consumed by Americans come from refined, processed, GMO-laden foods filled with sugar, salt, trans-fats and artificial ingredients.

To balance this out we go to the gym, which–considering that 70 percent of us over 20 are now officially overweight and/or obese–apparently doesn’t balance the scales at all.

We worry about balancing work and home life–although I just looked up the average number of hours Americans work per week and, having done so, now have no idea what the hell everybody’s complaining about. Apparently Americans work an average of 34.4 hours per week. Okay – add five hours a week commuting (including stops for a latte and scone) and we’re almost at a 40-hour-work week. But who are these people? Where are they? I don’t know anyone who works that little!

Fortunately, I’m self-employed and only work about 60 hours a week. And I do so from home. Which means I automatically have the Balance Work and Home Life thing solved no matter what.

Gender balance–now there’s a biggie. Women STILL aren’t being paid equal wages for equal work in the US, women STILL only account for 19.4 percent of legislators and a many-times bankrupt, many-times married, morally disheveled, ill-spoken, ill-prepared, boorish male with a ferocious ego and no public service experience whatsoever can STILL beat the most polite, erudite, qualified political candidate to ever step up to a podium if she happens to be a she.

Yes–balance is a BIG deal in our world because there’s so damn little of it.

But as I was getting up from my meditation pillow this morning, feeling all glow-y and balanced and content, it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps the reason we’re still struggling to establish balance on the outside is because we haven’t found balance individually on the inside yet.

Living in physical bodies, this isn’t surprising. Despite what mysticism and science tell us to the contrary, despite all that talk in church about the Holy Spirit and the soul, most of us fully believe we’re physical beings dwelling in a physical world. So a belief that contentment and a certain degree of happiness can be achieved through the balance of our physical activities isn’t illogical. It’s just that it doesn’t work.

And the reason it doesn’t work is because the physical world isn’t reliable. Life is, by nature, mutable. Situations and people change. You can have a 401K, money in the bank, and a house in the burbs and still lose it all. You can sign a marriage contract in blood and still end up divorced. Accidents happen. People die. Pets run away. Children get sick. Hurricanes, floods, tornedoes and earthquakes level whole cities.

The most balanced, orderly, clock-work regime in the world can go tits up in a heartbeat. That’s life.

Inner balance on the other hand, once actually established, is unshakable.

It’s the “once actually established” part that puts most people off, I think. With our focus fixed on the world circus, absorbed by the trials of our own tumultuous lives, seeking outside solutions, we believe we don’t have time for such pastimes as meditation. But if we genuinely knew it was a scientifically reliable answer to all the unhappiness and flailing around we do … ?

If we genuinely knew that all the answers to all the questions in our hearts lay within us … if we genuinely knew that peace would prevail on Earth once we located it within our own minds through meditation … wouldn’t we go for it?

Wouldn’t we?

And if not … why not?

There’s a one-word answer: EGO. But it’ll take more than one blog to address that story.

Why Sofia Vergara Relying On Latina Stereotypes For Laughs Is So Damaging

I use to love Sofía Vergara. I was proud to call her a fellow Colombian immigrant. I thought she was a positive representation of my country during a time when most Americans seemed to think it was synonymous with cocaine and Pablo Escobar. 

I loved that she was beautiful and charming but didn’t take herself too seriously ― a combination that’s made her a darling in the entertainment industry. Her shrewd business sense and ability to juggle numerous endorsement deals, merchandise lines and the Hispanic talent management company, Latin WE have made her the highest paid actress on television for five consecutive years. 

Vergara is a self-made businesswoman who has built a profitable and impressive empire. She is well beyond needing to rely on Latina stereotypes for a laugh ― which is why it’s so frustrating to watch her step on screen (or on a revolving Emmy platform) and continually make herself the butt of the joke.

Unfortunately, she did little to change those tendencies at Sunday night’s Golden Globes. While on stage, she made the “mistake” of saying anal instead of annual. She then jokingly corrected herself by saying “anus” before ending the bit she later told Instagram followers she came up with backstage.

Sure, the crowd laughed. Perhaps I would have too if it weren’t for how often she makes her accent the punchline. 

A quick search on YouTube of Vergara will surely bring you to a clip of her making a dig at her thick accent. It’s become normal that she and others make fun of the fact that she pronounces things like the name of her favorite football team or Covergirl’s tagline differently.  

The habit of using her already hypersexualized figure for laughs is troubling, as well. Vergara, and all Latinas, are more than their bodies or possible sex appeal but her actions on-screen do little to dispel the stereotype. She was willingly objectified during the Emmys in 2014 when she stood on a revolving platform and said her big boobs made her look “like a hooker” at the 2013 SAG awards. 

So enough is enough. What Vergara thinks and says of her thick accent and curves is, of course, very much her own business. Yet how she continually portrays it on-screen is problematic for Latinas everywhere. 

It wouldn’t matter if Vergara was the only person poking fun at herself, but doing so has given others comedic license to do so as well. And the result is the normalization of laughing at thick accents.

What Vergara thinks and says of her thick accent and curves is, of course, very much her own business. Yet how she continually portrays it on screen is problematic for Latinas everywhere.

Diego Luna very recently proved there is real power in treating accents with respect. When the actor proudly kept his thick accent on the big screen for “Rogue One” he made hundreds of fans, including a Mexican father who became the subject of a viral post, feel represented and proud of their own accents.

I, admittedly, don’t have much of an accent, but I did grow up with a mother who spent decades too ashamed to speak English to others because of hers. My mother fearlessly left her country and family behind to give her two daughters a better life in a country where she knew neither the language nor the culture. She would attend community college courses night after night just to get a better grasp of a language she first began to learn in her late 30s while others never even considered learning a second language in their early 20s.

And it fills me with rage that anyone would think any less of my mother or any other hardworking immigrant in the U.S. based on how they pronounce the word “beach.”

But that is the reality of today, when “Speak English, this is America” and xenophobia is as rampant at a Kentucky mall as it is among politicians.

No, Sofia Vergara isn’t in charge of single-handedly eradicating Latina stereotypes on television, but she sure as hell shouldn’t be a part of the problem. And saying things like “I don’t know why people think stereotypes are so terrible” to a trade publication is only setting us back further. 

I only hope the actress realizes the damage she’s doing to those who don’t have the privilege of fame to fall back on every time she makes her accent or her curves the butt of any joke.

The Joker Reading A Trump Tweet Is Terrifying. Thanks, Mark Hamill!

If you thought Donald Trump’s tweets couldn’t sound any scarier, think again.

Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill just put a twisted spin on the president-elect’s messages by reading one of them in the cackling voice of the Joker from the animated Batman series.

Hamill, who has voiced the diabolical villain since the early 1990s, uploaded the 30-second reading of Trump’s New Year’s Eve message to Twitter on Saturday. He labeled it “The Trumpster quote #1,” suggesting there may be more to come.

The chilling clip was apparently inspired by comedy writer Matt Oswalt, who had suggested that Trump’s New Year’s Eve tweet sounded like something the Joker might say “before releasing a swarm of killer bees into Gotham.” Just before Hamill uploaded his recording, Oswalt pitched what he called a “billion dollar” app that would play back Trump’s tweets in the Joker’s voice.

Hamill readily jumped onboard.

“Nobody writes better super-villain dialogue than Trumputin!” he declared, using a mashup of the president-elect’s name with that of Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

Twitter users seemed to agree while also pointing to a similar effort by “Futurama” actor Billy West, who voices the cartoon character Zapp Brannigan.

Brannigan, as it happens, is an egotistical and sexist senior member of the show’s interplanetary military who considers himself a hero, but is actually a brainless coward.

I learned the secrets of being likeable from a waitress named Debbie.

I was working in a high-end restaurant as a cocktail waitress. The place was known for its steaks and was a hot spot for businessmen. The lunch crowd was made up mostly of suits and ties; a lot of powerful guys who wore beautiful watches and who all had sort of a new car scent about them.

The tip potential from a single shift was huge. Most of us were young, broke waitresses; we quickly got to know the customers and could spot the big spenders the minute they walked through the door.

You had one shot at gaining a customer’s loyalty; from the time they sat down until they paid their bill was your chance to make a big impression. If you did it right, they would reward you with a great tip and choose your section again in the future.

It was high stakes peacocking.

We would each try to be the most requested server. We were required to wear black skirts and white shirts so that we would make subtle improvements to our uniforms in the way of shorter hemlines, tighter shirts, and push-up bras; the whole idea was to get noticed.

We would be charming, and would try different approaches to get them to like us.

Most of us were great at getting first timers to sit in our section, but for some reason they didn’t become regulars. In this type of an environment, regulars are everything.

This was the case for everyone except Debbie.

Debbie was a money maker, big time. I had heard about her during my training period. The server I was shadowing told me the fastest way to get fired is by messing with Debbie.

I had heard stories about her. Customers would forfeit available tables in other sections and wait at the bar until something opened up in her area. She had most of the big spending customers as her regulars. The bartenders and staff loved her; she was the queen of the kingdom.

I finally met her two weeks into my job, and she was not what I had expected.

I had imagined her to be this super model look alike with a tiara practically welded to her head. Going off of her incredible reviews, I had drawn her very differently in my mind.

She was from Tennessee. She had long wavy brownish hair that she pulled back into a messy ponytail. She wore no makeup, had on a regular length black skirt and an oversized men’s button-down white shirt. She was not what I had expected.

She was the girl next door.

So what was it about her that connected so powerfully with everyone? It wasn’t her looks or her sex appeal; Debbie’s magic was her people skills.

I studied her. Seriously, I watched her like an educational film. I wanted to learn her secret. I paid attention to her body language, listened to her tone of voice and dissected her interactions with the customers. I asked people why they liked her so much, and I was able to piece together the anatomy of her social gift.

  1. She was easy. She didn’t need anything in the way of approval from anyone. She didn’t have any expectations of people. She maintained her own self esteem.
  2. She let you be you. You didn’t have to edit yourself around her or apologize for your opinions. You could talk to her openly about anything.
  3. She heard you. There’s a big difference between listening and hearing. She had the ability to interpret what you were trying to say, and understand where you were coming from.
  4. She refused to trash others, ever.
  5. She cleaned up her messes. If she made a mistake, she owned it.
  6. She was comfortable in her own skin. This was a big part of her charm. She liked who she was, felt good about herself.
  7. She was warm. Debbie was like the sun; she was warm and welcoming. People felt good being around her.
  8. She had no expectations. She didn’t do anything with an agenda. She didn’t manipulate people or situations.
  9. She was real. She wasn’t trying to be anyone or anything; she came as she was.
  10. She liked people and understood human nature. Debbie would often say you can’t have a beautiful garden without fertilizer. She knew that people could be ugly and give you crap in life, but the key was not letting it make you hard or bitter. Whatever was thrown at her in life was added to her garden and made her more beautiful as a person.

Debbie was popular because she was real.

She was honest; everything about her was hers. She didn’t alter herself to impress anyone. She didn’t need validation. Being around her was effortless; she didn’t need your constant approval, she didn’t bring along drama, and she accepted you exactly as you were.

She required zero maintenance.

There are so many copies and fakes in the world; people want the genuine article. It doesn’t matter how shiny a piece of glass is; when you put it next to a diamond it loses its luster.

I learned you can’t create who you are and try to pass it off as an original; at best you’ll be a good forgery.

Debbie was the real deal; she was the diamond.

California Killer Is First U.S. Inmate To Have State-Funded Gender Confirmation Surgery

A convicted murderer serving a life sentence in California has become the first inmate in America to have gender confirmation surgery paid for by a state.

Shiloh Heavenly Quine, 57, had the surgery in San Francisco Thursday and will be moved to a women’s prison when she leaves the hospital, Reuters reported.

Quine — who has been convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping and robbery for ransom and has no possibility of parole — won the right to the surgery after a hard-fought court settlement in 2015.

As part of the settlement, the state also agreed to create new policies in California allowing other inmates to apply to a six-member committee for gender confirmation surgery. In addition, California agreed to supply clothing and some accessories in prison consistent with an inmate’s gender identity.

“For too long, institutions have ignored doctors and casually dismissed medically necessary and life-saving care for transgender people just because of who we are,” Kris Hayashi, executive director of the Transgender Law Center, which represents Quine, said in a statement. 

The daughter of Quine’s victim is furious.

“My dad begged for his life,” said Farida Baig, who tried to block Quine’s surgery through the courts, The Associated Press reported. “It made me dizzy and sick. I’m helping pay for his [sic] surgery. I live in California. It’s kind of like a slap in the face.” 

Quine and an accomplice kidnapped and fatally shot 33-year-old Shahid Ali Baig, a father of three, in Los Angeles in 1980, and took $ 80 and his car.

The state was legally required to pay for the operation, said Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections.

“The 8th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution requires that prisons provide inmates with medically necessary treatment for medical and mental health conditions including inmates diagnosed with gender dysphoria,” she said in a statement. 

Quine told a prison psychologist who recommended her for the operation that it would bring a “drastic, internal completeness,” according to the AP. 

She tried to cut and hang herself in prison five times in suicide attempts.

Michelle-Lael Norsworthy, a transgender former inmate, won a federal court order in 2015 mandating that California pay for her gender confirmation surgery, but she was placed on parole before she could have the operation, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

After Less Than A Week Of GOP Control, Kentucky Passes 20-Week Abortion Ban

The Kentucky legislature on Saturday passed a bill banning abortions after 20 weeks, sending it to the desk of Gov. Matt Bevin (R), who is expected to sign it.

The ban came less than a week after Republicans took control over all three branches of Kentucky government. Before the November election, Republicans had not controlled the Kentucky House since 1921.

Anti-abortion advocates argue that fetuses can feel pain at 20 weeks, but that claim isn’t supported by medical evidence. Reproductive rights advocates worry that 20-week bans could be used as a vehicle to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that protects a woman’s right to have an abortion. Nearly 20 states have passed 20-week abortion bans.

The Kentucky legislature also passed a separate bill Saturday that requires a woman to have an ultrasound before she receives an abortion. Bevin is also expected to sign that bill.

ACLU-KY Advocacy Director Kate Miller called the ultrasound bill “nothing more than a state-mandated guilt trip designed to shame women seeking safe, legal abortions.” 

Neither the 20-week abortion ban nor the ultrasound bill contains exceptions for cases of rape and incest.

Both measures moved remarkably quickly through the Kentucky legislature, which opened its session on Tuesday. The laws contain emergency language that will make them effective immediately once they are signed, the Lexington Herald Leader reported earlier this week.

The ACLU of Kentucky and Planned Parenthood have criticized how quickly the 20-week ban moved through the legislature. Demonstrators took to the state capitol building in Frankfort this week to protest the bill. 

Things are moving so quickly, members of the public and press were unable to obtain copies of the 20-week abortion ban and ultrasound bills before they received a reading and were headed to committee for a vote.”

Lawmakers are also considering a different measure that would block state and local funds from going towards funding any organization that provides abortion services.

WATCH: Getting More Than Your Money’s Worth

We’ve all heard the expression, “You get what you paid for,” but we also all have experiences of feeling like we got little value for something we paid a lot for, and lots of value for something we got for little or no money (I’m hoping that certain YouTube videos fall into that category…). Maybe the real truth is that we get what we choose to get – that we are responsible for the amount of value we receive. And if that’s the case, choose to get maximum value from whatever you invest your time and money into. I hope this helps you get the most from this new year.

Steve Martin, Carrie Fisher, and the Male Response to Female Beauty

In response to the news that Carrie Fisher had died, Steve Martin shared on Facebook the vivid memory of the impact Ms. Fisher had had on him nearly forty years before (presumably when he’d seen her portraying Princess Leia in the first Star Wars movie).

“When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen,” Martin began.

As has been widely reported, Steve Martin’s tribute was publicly attacked by some as “sexist.” “Remember Carrie Fisher for her talent, her feminism, her commentary on mental health,” New York Magazine wrote, “– not for the way she looked.” A Twitter user’s comment captured the essence of these attacks: “”Seriously @SteveMartinToGo quit being such a jerk for thinking Carrie Fisher was beautiful and saying so on the occasion of her death.”

Although Steve Martin had his defenders, nonetheless, in the face of the attacks, he retreated and deleted his posting.

More needs to be said about how wrong-headed are those attacks.

Let me begin by acknowledging that women have much to complain about the manner in which men relate to them regarding their looks and their bodies. And they have much to complain about how men fail to relate to them– as full human beings worthy of respect. Particularly in the aftermath of an election to the presidency of a man we have heard boasting of sexually assaulting women, the injured feelings of women whose humanity has been denied and abused warrants acknowledgment and consideration.

So the following is not intended as a counter-attack on those women who, triggered perhaps by his rhapsodic comment about Carrie Fisher’s beauty, attacked Steve Martin. It is, rather, an attempt to clarify what there is in men’s response to womanly beauty that deserves to be honored, not condemned.

“Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen.” One can hear a fullness of heart in Steve Martin’s statement. He is recalling an experience of inspiration–a breathing in of spirit in response to something that touched him deeply, a pleasurable recollection of being moved by beauty.

I imagine most men can identify with that appreciation of womanly beauty. And it’s a good thing that we are that way. That response is deeply wired into our nature. It is a response that has for eons been life-serving, and life-enhancing.

The evolutionary process that has shaped us has seen to it that, by nature, we feel the feelings that help keep us alive and serve to pass our form of life forward into the future. It is good that the male human is moved, as Steve Martin was, by the perception of female beauty. That is no small part of how it has come to pass that there are people on this earth.

It has been well-established scientifically that what the human male finds beautiful in the human female is correlated with health, fertility, and advantageous genetic endowment. The perpetuation of life is vital business, and it is life-serving for us to appreciate what will help us continue our kind.

Appreciation of this sort connects with our fundamental being at a level way deeper than our liking someone’s “commentary on mental health.” That sort of thing can be real, but it is most unlikely to produce a memory that is still resonant forty years later.

Steve Martin was accused of responding to Carrie Fisher purely in physical terms. But I doubt that’s true at all. We humans do not just mate, we also form relationships as lovers. We are wired not just to produce offspring, but also to form families that can nurture our offspring through their prolonged period of dependency. Heart and soul are also involved, and when we see one another, we see more than just the purely physical.

Carrie Fisher was a woman of real spirit, and that quality of her being was entirely visible in her portrayal of the highly spirited character, Princess Leia. I would wager that when Steve Martin found Carrie Fisher beautiful, he was responding also to that spirit.

That was certainly the case the moment I first met my own beloved, April, more than thirty years ago. As she walked toward me on that afternoon in Rock Creek Park in Washington (on April 21, 1984), I saw her physical loveliness. (Not beauty-queen beautiful, but certainly pleasing to the eye even at that level.) But what captivated me immediately was a beauty that was both visible and at the level of the spirit.

Here’s how I put it two and a half years later, in the vow that I’d composed for our wedding. Describing her eyes as “like an open blue sky,” I said, “I saw in that first moment that your face is a clear window of your brave and beautiful soul.”

I continue to be moved by that beauty at moments that are, thankfully, not at all rare. Indeed, the moments that I’ve been most deeply moved by womanly beauty have been in recent years with April, who is now in her sixties. It is part of what I call “the sacred space of lovers.” And the experience of the heightening of my perception of such beauty illustrates the wisdom in the question asked by that old song: “Do I love you because you are beautiful? Or are you beautiful because I love you?”

The connections between the perception of beauty and the feeling of the open heart are complex. Steve Martin, I imagine, was not coming from any less-than-human “sexist” place in his perception of Carrie Fisher. I imagine that, back when he was a young man and he saw that beauty, had Steve Martin been given the opportunity to sit across the table from the young woman he had appreciated, he would have treated her as endearingly as he knew how to. If “sexism” implies some sort of lesser treatment, I doubt how he beheld Carrie Fisher would have been sexist in the least.

Men are supposed to appreciate women, and it all begins with first sight.

I am still moved also by the beauty I see in other women. Experiences of beauty – in general – are important to me. I am moved by the beauty of the music of Bach and Mozart. Moved, too, by the sight of the trees’ spring leaves emerging in the valley and ascending the slopes toward our house on the ridge. But nothing moves me more profoundly than womanly beauty, and the way movie stars are cast suggests that looking at such beauty is a pleasure that is pretty nigh universal.

I’m sure Steve Martin would affirm that his memory of seeing that “most beautiful creature” is a pleasurable one. Beholding womanly beauty is pleasurable for the men I know, and thus this response is life-enhancing as well as life-serving.

It does not diminish in the least that sacred space between April and me that I appreciate womanly beauty wherever I see it. As I see it, our being lovers is more than just a connection between her as a specific human woman and me as a specific human man. It is also a representation of that ancient reality of woman and man coming together in love, as lovers.

As Leonard Cohen put it in his song, “That’s No Way to Say Good-bye”:

Yes many loved before us
I know we are not new
In city and in forest
They smile like me and you

I love April not only for being her, but also for being the embodiment of Woman in my life. Did I not appreciate “woman,” I’d appreciate April the less.

That a man should respond to the beauty of woman is a sign of life’s flowering in him. Just as I would wish for every man to see in his beloved some substantial piece of the beauty that Steve Martin saw in Carrie Fisher, so would I wish for every man the capacity to see representatives of such beauty in the world around him.

The love of womanly beauty, and of the beautiful qualities that can be conveyed in that visible beauty, partakes of the sacred in the human realm.

Steve Martin’s recollection of Carrie Fisher’s beauty deserves to be celebrated, not silenced..
