Brexit And The South China Sea: Why Politicians Lie

2016-07-13-1468373311-7400519-image_update_img.jpg

China’s so-called historic rights in the South China Sea are bogus (see here, and here.) Since the 1990s, Chinese leaders and politicians have consciously been spreading false historic evidence about purported ancient Chinese possessions in the disputed waters, not only to rally domestic support for China’s maritime expansion, but also to justify the seizure of territories occupied by other neighboring states.

Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage and the majority of politicians campaigning for the United Kingdom to quit the European Union have consciously been feeding the British public untruths in the run up to last month’s Brexit vote. The most blatant example being the Leave campaign’s promise to spend the (£) 350 million Great Britain purportedly sends to the EU every week on the National Health Service. (The UK Statistic Authority repeatedly exposed the number as false.)

In the two instances cited above, both Chinese and British politicians are liars. However, they appear to lie for two different reasons. Whereas the former are telling strategic lies–falsehoods in the service of the national interest or raison d’état–the latter have spread selfish lies-untruths spread to protect their own selfish interests–during the Brexit campaign. (Simon Kuper recently classified the referendum as an Oxford Union election gone awry.)

Of course this classification is a subjective assessment. Nevertheless, one thing is objectively true: Both Chinese President Xi Jinping and former London Mayor Boris Johnson have primarily lied to their people rather than lying to leaders of other countries, which unfortunately for the two, however, may have a greater negative net effect than inter-state lying on their respective countries’ institutions and population, as John J. Mearsheimer points out in his 2011 book Why Leaders Lie:

[T]he most dangerous kinds of international lies are those that leaders tell their own citizens. They are more likely to backfire and damage a state’s strategic position than the lies leaders tell other states. Moreover, they are more likely to corrupt political and social life at home, which can have many harmful consequences for daily life.

In the case of both China and Great Britain, Mearsheimer appears to have been proven right.

Enforcing dubious historical rights through so-called gray zone coercion in the South China Sea–justified by an obvious historic untruth akin to the Donation of Constantine–China has isolated itself internationally and helped cement a burgeoning anti-China coalition in the Asia-Pacific region. The United States, while not always prone to speak the truth on the South China Sea either, only had to sit back and bear witness to China containing itself in the murky waters of the Western Pacific.

The lies of Boris Johnson and his cohorts threaten the very existence of Great Britain with a Scottish referendum on the country’s independence again on the table. Northern Ireland might follow suit. Great Britain might turn into the Little England of the 15th and 16th centuries “with trouble at home and an uneasy relationship with the continent, at once needing trade with it yet fearing its influence,” as the historian Margaret MacMillan recently wrote in FT Weekend.

It would be, however, too easy to just blame the leaders and politicians of the countries for spreading lies in one form or the other. Lying about a historical record is often tied to the presumed necessity of creating nationalist myths in order to build and maintain a state. China’s “historical rights” in the South China Sea are partially predicated on this assumption that national myths are essential in the country’s rise to power, and that they are, even if not true, needed to hold the country together.

Brexit supporters in the United Kingdom have also tried to invoke English nationalism by recalling an idyllic but simultaneously glorious past, when Great Britain was sovereign over its destiny; Britannia was ruling the waves, and–most importantly–foreigners and immigrants were confined to their proper place (presumably not England). However, English national myth making (unsurprisingly) appears to have had a centrifugal effect on the United Kingdom that has divided rather than united the country so far.

Ere yet another frontal assault on the Elite, it is worthwhile to point out that Mearsheimer asseses that the people, not just a country’s leaders, are complicit in creating national myths, or, put more bluntly, national lies:

The creation of national myths, however, is not simply a case of elites concocting false stories and transmitting them to their publics. In fact, the common people invariably hunger for these myths; they want to be told stories about the past in which they are portrayed as the white hats and opposing nations as the black hats. In effect nationalist mythmaking is driven from below as well as from above.

Nevertheless, this observation should not be taken as an excuse by leaders and politicians to whitewash their dishonesty. While a good case can be made about the necessity for inter-state lying on occasion, a case for leaders to lie to the public is much harder to make, and one does not even need to recall Kipling’s chilling epitaph on the British dead of the First World War: “If any question why we died, Tell them, because our fathers lied.”

The principle issue with leaders and politicians consciously lying to their constituents is that it prohibits people from making informed and rational choices. In the case of China, this is specifically the reason why they are being lied to, since an informed and rational Chinese public, in all likelihood, would not support Xi Jinping’s brinkmanship over a few rocks in the Western Pacific (“Mourir Pour Scarborough Shoal?” Anyone?).

In the case of the United Kingdom, a Western democracy, the fact that Boris Johnson’s acolytes got away with lying to the public without serious repercussions not only spreads mistrust between those who govern and the governed, but more importantly, and alas more troublesome to a democracy, it is poised to undermine the rule of law–the lifeblood of the democratic experiment–since trust in elected leaders and the law is the sinew that holds any democratic system together.

Ultimately, lying in any form, whether in domestic or international politics, more often than not increases the chances of unintended consequences–Brexit is happening, and the anti-China coalition in Southeast Asia is consolidating.

“If we’ve been telling lies, you’ve been telling half-lies. A man who tells lies, like me, merely hides the truth. But a man who tells half-lies has forgotten where he put it,” a British civil servant tells a disgusted T.E. Lawrence in the film Lawrence of Arabia highlighting an additional danger in lying. Liars sooner or later will have difficulties separating facts from falsehood. In that sense, both Boris Johnson and Xi Jinping may simply also have forgotten where they put the truth.

Dial Up The Frequency Of Love — It’s All Good

“The world has gone crazy!”

“People have lost their minds!”

“It’s not a safe place!”

“The world is going to hell in a hand basket!”

SO.MUCH.FEAR.

How about instead of getting sucked up into that vortex, we dial up the frequency of Love?

Yes, there is a lot of upheaval, chaos, if you will. And instead of trying to control it and being afraid of it, we can look at it for what it is:

The perfect unfolding in which many blessings lie. The new paradigm emerging as the old ones crumble.

It’s all good.

Fear, scarcity and lack are not sustainable anymore. That’s why it’s showing up more than ever. It’s fighting for it’s last breath. It’s always been there – all the horrors that are happening around the world – we just know where it lives now.

It’s in our face.

Why?

Because we are waking up!

I learned that in space when light expands and hits darkness, there is initial friction when they meet before light expands some more.

So, shine on and embrace the friction, knowing that on a grander scale, everything is playing out as it should for one simple reason…

To restore balance and harmony.

Does that rub you the wrong way?

Ah, there’s the friction.

Do you want to defend the limitations of being right? After all, there’s so many stories to support why the world has gone mad. Just turn on the news, read the paper, or log in to the social networks.

Instead, dare to Love even when it seems impossible or even when it feels wrong – after all, shouldn’t we be raging when yet another act of violence has been reported across the globe? Doesn’t that show we care? So, how can we love when atrocities are happening around the world?

How can we not?

I do know from experience that Love is the most powerful frequency on the planet and it’s always there because it’s all there is. We are conduits for that frequency. We can at any moment choose to allow Love to flow through us.

Talk about true power.

Ask yourself how it feels and what it looks like to dial up the frequency of Love when, in that moment, you want to react and post away on social media the expression of your rage.

Pause and pay attention to what comes up for you.

I definitely have my reactions to what’s happening in the world and I have my feelings about it. When I’m triggered, I step away and deal with my emotions first. I allow them to show me what it is I’m really upset about.

I check in with myself before I post anything. Am I coming from a place of Love? If not, I do not post.

These are extraordinary times to be living on the planet. Extraordinary times to be choosing Love.

So no matter what’s happening around you, I dare you to dial up the frequency of Love.

And then pay attention to what happens.

Because, as a friend of mine always says, “It’s all good.”

And it is.

How I Went From No Way To Namaste: How Yoga Saved My Life

Last year I was a heap of depression. I was a 35-year-old new mother who suffered major complications after the delivery of my daughter. Those complications gave way to the aftershocks of PTSD and a heavy dose of postpartum depression. The dream of summer days spent enjoying my little one, taking long walks with the stroller, working the garden, and getting a night or two out with my partner were shattered into shards of anxiety, anger, lethargy, a deep mistrust of my own body. It was lonely, and it sucked the life out of me. I got real bitter before I got better.

My younger sister came to visit from California where she lives as a yoga instructor; reached out down to the depths of me and encouraged me to just “try” a yoga class. I was completely turned off, there was no way that I was going to Namaste my way out of the sinkhole that surrounded me. Or so I thought. She went back home and I spent a few more months in my misery until one evening I received a phone call from another friend asking me to join her for an all to early morning yoga class the next day. I accepted her invitation and the next day I found myself sweating and sliding across a yoga mat.

There were women twice my age holding poses as I flipped and flopped all over the floor. My sweat turned to tears as I realized how far I had fallen away from my body. Despite my poor performance something peaked my interest. I was moving through my body to reach my monkey mind. I felt just the slightest bit more settled after that first class, so I went back the very next day, and I have kept going back for five months now.

After the first week or two of scrambling to get a sitter so I could show up to the studio every day my life began to change. I was sleeping better, eating better, I had more patience for my children and for myself. Physically I was still not anywhere near the others in the class, but my mind started to calm down. My anxiety began to subside slowly. I was hooked.

I began a steady practice, missing perhaps one or two days per week. I tried all different kinds of yoga. Hatha, Vinyassa, Restorative, and Kundalini. Each class had its own unique benefits and I began to round out the rough edges in my head and in my heart. The studio where I practice noticed my dedication and asked me to intern; and now I have found a community amongst the other yogis from all walks of life. The teachers would begin and end each class in meditation and it was in those moments where all the physical work of yoga integrated into mental stability and calm. I began to emerge better than I was before my bout with depression.

Yoga and meditation has completely transformed me. Physically I am stronger, leaner, more flexible; my skin even glows. But inside, mentally is where the real change has occurred for me. I am quicker to note the positives in life before the negative. I am more kind to those closest to me. I want to help others achieve their goals. I think the practice allowed me to step outside of myself and become part of a bigger picture painted with patience, understanding, compassion, and endurance.

Where once I was skeptic, I am now an advocate. I have my sister and all the wonderful teachers to thank for that. They inspired me on my journey from “No Way, to Namaste”; and I am forever grateful.

Kensuke’s Kingdom

Kensuke’s Kingdom

Kensuke’s Kingdom is a true children’s classic by former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo, the creator of War Horse. I heard the wind above me in the sails. I remember thinking, this is silly, you haven’t got your safety harness on, you haven’t got your lifejacket on. You shouldn’t be doing this. I was in the cold of the sea before I could even open my mouth to scream. Washed up on an island in the Pacific, Michael struggles to survive on his own. With no food and no water, he curls up to die. When he wakes, there is a plate beside him of fish, of fruit, and a bowl of fresh water. He is not alone. From the author of War Horse, Private Peaceful, An Eagle in the Snow, Listen to the Moon, and I Believe in Unicorns comes a stunning children’s story – loved by kids, teachers and parents alike. Michael Morpurgo has written more than one hundred books and won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, the Circle of Gold Award, the Children’s Book Award and has been short-listed for the Carnegie Medal four times. 5 Questions For Rick Smyre And Neil Richardson About America’s Political Future And ‘Preparing For A World That Doesn’t Exist – Yet’

As we head into convention season, it has become apparent that something is broken in America’s federal politics. Gridlock has ground much of government to a halt and the process of choosing presidential candidates has never been so drawn out, expensive, and for many, disheartening. According to a recent Gallop poll, Party affiliation has dropped to a new low. People are asking: Is the Federal system failing its citizens?

Rick Smyre and Neil Richardson are futurists who have seen the growing dysfunction of government coming for some time. Their book, Preparing for a World that Doesn’t Exist – Yet, offers some surprisingly optimistic pathways for a more vibrant and more resilient future in politics, economics, community development, education and healthcare. The book’s launch takes place Saturday, July 23rd at the 50th World Futures Conference in Washington D.C. This falls right in between the Republican and Democratic Conventions – as if they are two slices of bread, and the book launch is the sandwich filling. I decided to interview Smyre and Richardson about the book, with a focus on what needs to change in our political process:

Question 1: Why do you think the federal political system is in trouble, and what do we need to do to fix it?

Answer: The federal system is broken. It no longer works as it did 200 or 50 years ago, perhaps even 20 years ago. All systems evolve and transform over time to be able to adapt to constant change. A key problem with the political system in the United States is that fundamentally it is the same system as it was when George Washington was president. It was designed to slow down decision-making to insure that the principle of “sovereignty of the people” limited the power of government. When mass communication and the Internet emerged, it created a context of real time, exponential change. As a result, our representative system of government began to struggle to deal with complexities of the society that did not previously exist. Added to this concern is that Americans do not see themselves represented by either of the major parties and, therefore, hold a high level of distrust for elected officials who, too often, have replaced rampant self-interest for the common good.

We believe that we are in transition from an industrial society to an ecological one in which deep collaboration and interdependency increasingly will be required. Until recently leaders searched for and believed that there was “one best answer” to every problem. This reflected the Industrial Age’s emphasis on efficiency and standardization. As the pace of the society and economy grew faster and faster due to the impacts of emerging radical technologies, faster travel and real-time communication, the interaction of multiple factors now predominates. Yet we are not prepared for a time that is increasingly fast-paced, interconnected and complex. All citizens are searching for new ways to feel that they can make an impact as traditional forms and methods are increasingly obsolete.

We believe that Americans want to have access to the right information at the right times in order to make informed choices. There is a strong sense that interest groups, lobbyists and the wealthy have too much influence. We propose that elected officials and citizens work together to reconceptualize how to design a system of broader and effective citizen involvement in an ongoing “futures generative dialog” that uses the power of transformational thinking and the web to co-create and birth of a new concept of the common good for the 21st century.

Question 2: In America’s first elections, the population of the nation was around three million people; less than 2% of them could vote – only white, male property owners. Today, in a population of roughly three hundred million, over two hundred million can vote. This increases the gap between people and their politicians, and makes responsive democracy seem out of reach. What’s the way forward?

Answer: We believe that in order to reenergize our democracy, we need to rethink how to close the gap between citizens and their elected officials. Although not necessarily advocating for direct or referendum focused democracy , we do believe that new systems of decision making will need to emerge over time in order to balance the needs of adapting to constant change, co-creating new ideas, and insuring the ability to make appropriate real time decisions as fast as possible.

For example, many, if not most politicians, base their policy initiatives on polling data. It’s been our experience that policy that is driven and created from back and forth dialog is the best way to come to consensus and set the stage for decision making. For issues that are extremely complex we recommend something we call Future’s Generative Dialog that builds capacities for transformation over time by seeding new ways of thinking and acting in the short-run.

The next step in democracy is Polycentric Democracy that connects networks and allows for free thinking groups to come up with original solutions. In a Polycentric Democracy, instead of networks of lobbyists and single-issue interest groups working on specific, predetermined goals, we see interlocking networks and ecosystems of diverse people and groups coming together to work on emerging issues that will be increasingly complex.

Question 3: What do you see as the role of local community governments in the future?

Answer: Local government has a responsibility to be the first responders to public challenges. It is our view that local elected officials should also be held accountable for sensing, anticipating and preparing new ways to deal with emerging issues within a “futures context”, not just reacting to existing, full blown problems.

At the local and the national level, we foresee self-organizing groups of citizens forming together to dialog about and recommend imaginative approaches to deal with emerging issues. At the local level especially, we see amazing opportunities for elected officials to tap into the desire of citizens to undertake research and development and create a “citizen’s congress of the future” to identify the most important issues of concern for today as well as the emerging future.

Locally elected leaders need to be facilitators and bridge builders more than they need to be autocrats or generals leading a charge. The more brains involved in parallel decision-making processes for current issues and future capacities for transformation, the better.

Question 4: At the local level, what skills will future leaders need?

Answer: Future leaders at the local and the national level are going to need to develop the abilities and skills we call “master capacity builders,” such as: how to identify “weak signals” before they become trends; how to seed new ways of transformational thinking and action; how to design a system of parallel processes where “capacities for transformation” are created.

A society that is evolving from a structure of hierarchies, standard answers and predictability to one that is based on interlocking networks, multiple outcomes and a comfort with ambiguity and uncertainty, will increasingly demand thinker who can process diverse and often opposing information and make sense of it, as well as facilitators of transformational change able to connect disparate ideas, people and processes.

Also, leaders will need to be able develop the skills and techniques of “adaptive planning” when tangible strategic planning is not possible, and understand the role of networks whose connections lead to multiple outcomes and truths. Effective decision making in the future will take into account as many perspectives as possible.

Question 5: How do we get from here to there?

Answer: Our society and our economy are both changing too fast to be able to determine where “there” is more than one year out in most cases. And people are ready for change. They know the current political system of checks and balances, factional and ideological conflict is not working. We believe, more than any other time in American history people are fed up with elected officials and the network of lobbyists and wealthy special interest groups who have an outsized influence on politics.

It is time to let democracy evolve and acknowledge that ordinary residents have amazing access to information and can be engaged to help solve the most complex issues. For too long information was the ultimate powerbroker. Now with a few clicks on a search engine, one can learn and share thoughtful original research, and can dialog with neighbors near and far. It’s essential we connect this creative activity with our government’s decision-making processes. This will promote insight and innovation to our design of our collective future.

We see this transformation leading to a new emerging civilization, an ecological civilization. Not one defined by hierarchies and bureaucracies, but one that is interconnected, informed, imaginative, and in which all citizens are working to co-create their future.

Some things that we see happening are increasingly elegant ways that government is bringing people together to deal with increased complexity, whether using large-scale citizen input processes as was done focusing the vision on how to rebuild the World Trade Center complex, renew New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, or redesign parallel processes to rethink the future of education that is happening at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, NC.

We are working with local government leaders in Washington DC and elsewhere on how to engage people authentically in the very beginning of campaigns and how to keep them engaged over time. Of special interest is helping smaller communities learn how to prepare for a different kind of future.

Sh*t’s Bad Right Now, So Here’s A Short Story About A Rescued Cat

2016-07-21-1469123925-9440893-lauren1.jpeg

Shit’s kind of heavy for all of us right now, and we have a long road ahead, but I thought maybe, just maybe, you’d like five minutes of light reading about how I saved a cat and she saved me.

Her name is FatFace.

She’s been feral for at least five years and she has three teeth and she weighs under five pounds.

2016-07-21-1469123962-4057465-lauren2.jpeg

FatFace was part of a feral colony my neighbor took care of, and which I’ve subsequently taken over after my neighbor moved across town.

I enjoy our cat colony, which totals between 10-12 mostly black or Russian blue cats, but let me tell you something about taking care of cat colonies: Don’t publicly share that info at parties. One time I was at a networking event and met a handful of interesting people and had to stop this sentence from coming out of my mouth: “Oh, man. I have to get going! My cat colony is going to be piiiiissed if I don’t get home soon for feed time.”

(Side note: Our colony is fixed and if any genitalia-sporting cats come into the colony, my former neighbor traps them and gets them fixed through the Austin Humane Society’s trap-neuter-release program.)

2016-07-21-1469124003-4024795-lauren3.jpeg

FatFace was one of the oldest cats in the colony, and like most of the other ferals, she was terrified of us. Most of her time was spent hiding under the neighbor’s house or keeping herself at a distance, squinting, watching our every move. However, we took a shine to the little goober because of her tiny stature and her expressive face. When I acquired the colony and discovered she only had three teeth, I began feeding her soft food.

2016-07-21-1469124049-7101457-lauren5.jpeg

Over the course of nine months, FatFace went from eating soft food we left out, to letting us get very close to her, to letting us touch her, to letting us brush her, to letting us pet her. Now I’m happy to say she lives in our house and enjoys sleeping on my butt and sniffing my armpits. She also enjoys curling up like a tiny donut.

2016-07-21-1469124111-559913-lauren6.png

Here are some other fun fact about FatFace:

She’s between 5-10 years old.

We called her “he” for five years until I asked my vet to check out her netherparts.

She also likes to sleep on my chest and stare at me from about two-to-three inches from my face.

She does not like to be picked up; she makes this pathetic “muu-annn” sound when you do it.

She doesn’t like fancy-ass soft food; she likes good-ol’ mystery meat from Friskies.

We’ve managed to put one pound on her; she now weighs over five pounds.

My bf thinks she is part dwarf cat.

She has mouth herpes.

She loves when you push on her nose really hard. She gets so into it that she might bite your face.

She doesn’t mind if you scratch her stomach — but not the feet.

She’s a very affectionate, chill cat. Even when she’s ready to party at 3AM or eat at 7AM, she just stares at us or head bunts us.

She’s kind of a slob. Because she has mouth herpes and few teeth, she can’t eat or groom well. Most of the time we get salmon sneezes all over our faces.

During the day, I’ll lay on the bed next to her and instantly fall asleep.

At night time I can no longer get work done because she sleeps on my neck.

She’s very much loved by us.

2016-07-21-1469124146-6102112-lauren7.jpeg

I’ve never owned a cat before, and I never thought I could love a cat as much as I do. She has brought great joy to my life, and I hope I bring joy to hers.

Eugene Monroe Retires Early Over Concussion Fears

Seven-year NFL veteran Eugene Monroe announced his retirement from the league Thursday on The Players’ Tribune. In a blog post, he cited concerns that the game was affecting his brain and mental health as the main reason for hanging up his cleats at the age of 29.

“My wife used to joke about the ‘little things I forget,’” wrote Monroe, who played left tackle for the Baltimore Ravens for his final three seasons. “Things like that were just a joke around the house until this past winter, when my four-year-old daughter said, ‘Daddy you don’t remember anything!’”

By retiring due to mental health concerns explicitly, Monroe joins a growing list of former NFL players who put their brains before their money, including Buffalo Bills linebacker A.J. Tarpley and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland. The primary fear of these players is developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a degenerative brain disease cause by repeated hits to the head, which can only be diagnosed after death. According to Boston researchers, the disease was found in 87 of the 91 deceased former NFL players that were tested.

“The last 18 years have been full of traumatic injuries to both my head and my body,” Monroe wrote in The Players’ Tribune. He attributed those injuries to a “never-ending cycle” that seems to be the norm for most players in the NFL: “injury, shake it off, ‘recover,’ repeat.”

Monroe admitted that his decision might be perplexing to many people, but added, “I am thinking of my family first right now — and my health and my future.”

Zero Regrets

Zero Regrets

Over three consecutive Olympic games, Apolo Ohno has come to symbolize the very best of the competitive spiritremaining equally gracious in victory and defeat, always striving to improve his performance, and appreciating the value of the hard work of training as much as any reward it might bring. In Zero Regrets , Apolo shares the inspiring personal story behind his remarkable success, as well as the hard-won truths and strategies he has discovered in good times and bad. Raised by his single father, an immigrant from Japan who often worked twelve-hour days, the young Apolo found it difficult to balance his enormous natural gifts as an athlete with a wild, rebellious streak. After making a name for himself as a promising young speed skater, his career was almost over before it began when his lack of preparation caused him to finish last at the U.S. Olympic trials in 1998. A life-changing week of solitary soul-searching at the age of fifteen led him to recommit himself to his training, and at the 1999 world junior championships he won first place overallone of the most remarkable turnarounds in sports history. From that moment on, the world of speed skating had a new champion and Apolo was on his way to legendary status. Much more than an account of races won and lost, Zero Regrets is a compelling portrait of a father-and-son relationship that deepened over time and was based on respect, love, and faith in each other. For the first time, Apolo reveals what he knows about his long-absent mother; he makes us feel what it is like to face the best competitors on the planet with the eyes of millions of fans upon you; and he shares his secrets for achieving total focus and mental toughness, secrets that can be applied in situations well beyond sports. We learn the details of the unbelievably intense workout and diet that he endured while training for the 2010 Winter Olympics, a regime that literally reshaped his body and led to some of his most thrilling victories.

Preparing for a Trump Presidency

2016-07-20-1469042466-3000370-download.jpg

Although we progressives don’t like to contemplate the prospect of a Trump presidency, it would be wise to at least be prepared for such an eventuality, especially since polls show Clinton and Trump in a virtual tie. (Clinton is still favored roughly 60-40 in Nate Silver’s 531 analysis, down from 75-25 about a month ago). Even if Trump loses, the dynamics of American politics and government will have changed considerably, and progressives need to think about how to deal with those changed dynamics.

There are obvious dangers for progressive policies with Trump in the White House. Clearly, Trump will go after Obamacare, tighten immigration policies and promote a law and order crackdown. If the Republicans retain the Senate – the House is pretty much guaranteed to remain Republican through 2012 because of gerrymandering – then Obamacare will likely be repealed, although it is unclear how quickly it will be replaced and with what.

Depending on the nature of Trump’s anti-immigrant proposals, they are likely to be blocked by a Democratic Senate, or even watered down by a Republican Senate. However, Trump could go the executive order route, in which case Democrats would find themselves taking a similar tactic against Trump’s executive orders as the Republicans took against Obama’s actions. Trump might also use executive orders in law-and-order initiatives if his proposals risk running afoul of the Constitution or the Democratic Senate.

If incidents of domestic and foreign terrorism increase – as they are likely to — a Trump administration might attempt a crackdown on civil liberties, which would certainly provoke a fight from progressives and even some libertarians on the right. However, since Trump is skilled at stoking public fears, he could probably succeed in winning over public support for limits on speech and movement, as well as beefed-up surveillance of suspect communities.

Another, less obvious but equally important outcome of a Trump presidency could be a severe economic decline. Most of Trump’s trade and tax policies, not to mention the volatility of his personality and the political instability he represents, would likely impact economic growth and faith in the American economy. This could lead to more inflation, loss of jobs and financial instability. To counter these adverse economic effects that would hit middle-class, working-class and minority communities the hardest, progressives might have to make political alliances with some strange bedfellows – particularly the business community and big banks – who strongly oppose Trump’s damaging economic proposals.

Similarly, Trump’s nationalist and isolationist foreign policy could create lots of problems in our relations with other countries. His anti-China rants could conceivably lead to a trade war with China, our biggest creditor, and severely impact not only our economy, but also our national deficit and fiscal stability. And his get-tough attitude towards terrorism, as well as his “you-gotta-pay” approach to our allies, threatens to destabilize the globe. Here again, progressives may have to line up with a more globalist and interventionist world view to combat the xenophobic isolationism of Trump.

Obviously, Trump’s personality – which has been a central focus of both of his campaign and of the Clinton campaign – will be critical in any Trump administration. It is probably inevitable that he will commit offenses that would be regarded as impeachable by many in Congress, and therefore it is important for progressives to think about how they might position themselves in an impeachment proceeding. Simple revenge or retribution cannot be the theme of an impeachment, as the Republicans learned from the Clinton impeachment.

There may a few – very few – positives for progressives in a Trump presidency. For one thing, he has soundly rejected both establishment Republican and Tea Party orthodoxy, which may be good news for pro-choice supporters and those who support higher taxes on the wealthy. He also may be softer on climate change, bank regulation and other traditional conservative positions than either the establishment or Tea Party factions. However, the racism and xenophobia of his core supporters will spell trouble for minority communities, immigrants and other progressive constituencies.

Even if Trump loses, the political landscape will have changed dramatically. It is unlikely – even with a Democratic Senate and White House – that immigration reform, universal health care, strong environmental rules, increased taxes on the wealthy, infrastructure and education spending or a boatload of other progressive programs will make it into law. There will be an opportunity to change the direction of the country after the 2020 Census by correcting the Republican gerrymandering that will guarantee a Republican House until 2012. In the meantime, progressives would have to continue their uphill battle.

Why Heartache Is Good For You

The best is yet to come.

Dear ex-boyfriend,

I never got to say thank-you.

When you left me I was broken. You walked away without even a glance back, no second thought, not even a “sorry.” I was lost.

For months you stayed in my head, as pain, wondering where you were and what you were doing. How could you just leave me here on the floor?

Unable to understand.

And then I did.

I’d blindly marched in, eyes tightly shut and hands over my ears, I refused to speak out when it felt wrong – surely this was it, surely this was love. It was definitely my turn to get it right.

And all the while, deep down inside, this quiet screaming, “this isn’t right, this isn’t healthy.” We cheered each other on, deeper and deeper, drowning out the doubt.

I guess you just figured it out first, or perhaps the pretty girl helped you see the flaws in what we’d created.

Either way, it was over.

It took the longest while for me to see how right you were.

What I thought was my heart breaking, my world collapsing, my chance of happiness ending, was simply me growing, me getting better.

I found my voice, my sense of self, my confidence.

And now from the most genuine place I’m saying thank-you.

If I hadn’t gone through all of that with you, all of your pain, all your heartache, I wouldn’t be able to feel the happiness I feel now, the connection I have now and the love I’m falling into right now.

The best is definitely yet to come.

What did you learn?

Pokemon Go: Healthy or Deadly?

Whether you are a fan of Pokémon Go or not, no one can ignore its recent surge into global consciousness. In this article, we ask whether its popularity is likely to be positive or negative for the health of humanity.

Unless you have been deep-sea diving on Jupiter with your fingers in your ears, you will not have been able to avoid bumping into the phrase “Pokémon Go.”

In just a matter of days, the app became the biggest mobile game that the United States has ever seen, finally eclipsing Candy Crush Saga.

As with any fad, popular news outlets are either praising Pokémon Go or lambasting it as the next plague.

In case you have only just returned from Jupiter, I will briefly explain this new technological phenomenon.

Pokémon Go is a free-to-play smartphone game, based on the Japanese designed Pokémon franchise. The game encourages you to trap, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokémon.

Its premise is not dissimilar to a number of other games, but it has one major difference – it is linked to the real world. Using the mobile device’s GPS capability, players are required to physically walk around their local area, hunting out hidden characters within real-world maps.

Although the Pokémon Go concept itself is relatively standard, the game has the unusual ability to get gamers up and out of their chairs and moving around outdoors.

The effect of any app, game, or new technology on a population is likely to be minimal. That is, unless its uptake is huge; with Pokémon Go, the uptake certainly is huge.

Following its release in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S., the pressure on the game developers’ servers was far greater than expected. They had to postpone upcoming releases in other regions until they could strengthen their technology sufficiently to cope with the demand.

Within two days of Pokémon Go’s U.S. release, it was installed on an estimated 5 percent of all Android devices in the country. As of July 12, Pokémon Go boasted around 21 million active users.

With so many players, the game has the genuine ability to influence public health. The question is, will Pokémon Go yield positive health outcomes, or is it a potential death trap?

Pokémon Go: The good

Computer games are not generally considered to be good for one’s health. Other than the Nintendo Wii, computer games are often attacked for rewarding a lack of exercise. Pokémon Go, however, is a different beast.

The scourge of the sofa

First and foremost, Pokémon Go is getting younger (and older) people out of the house and moving around. This offers a huge potential benefit for the health of the population.

Researchers have demonstrated time and time again that a sedentary lifestyle is detrimental for a number of health parameters.

A study published in 2012, for instance, concluded: “Sedentary time is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.”

Another, published in 2015, found that long periods of sitting, regardless of fitness level, had a negative impact on health. The researchers concluded: “Prolonged sedentary time was independently associated with deleterious health outcomes regardless of physical activity.”

In that respect, Pokémon Go could have a very positive impact. If millions of Americans are walking farther than they normally would, on a daily basis, that has the potential to produce a significant benefit to public health.

Depression and walking

Other than the cardiovascular benefits of a swift stroll, being coerced into the great outdoors has other potential perks.

A meta-analysis, published in the journal Mental Health and Physical Activity in 2012, concluded that, although evidence from randomized, controlled trials is limited, “walking has a statistically significant, large effect on the symptoms of depression in some populations.”

Major depressive disorder affects an estimated 14.8 million American adults. Even if Pokémon Go only tempts a small number of these individuals outside, it could produce a significant upswing in their mental health.

Anecdotally, other Pokémon Go players have reported the benefits of interacting with people they would have never otherwise spoken to. Modern society has a tendency to minimize the amount of human contact we have. For some, an isolated life is no concern. Others, however, can feel lonely.

A British study, published in 2012, titled “Social isolation, loneliness, and all-cause mortality in older men and women,” concluded that “mortality was higher among more socially isolated and more lonely participants.” After controlling for demographic factors and baseline health, social isolation remained a significant predictor of mortality.

Pokémon Go: The bad

The media has been quick to report on the negative consequences of playing Pokémon Go.

Some of the stories are, no doubt, true. Others are probably exaggerated or beyond the scope of this article (armed robbery, kidnapping, and pedophilia traps, for instance).

One of the many tales of Pokémon woe involves 19-year-old Shayla Wiggins, who was lead to a river on her quest for Pokémon characters.

On her trek, she reported spotting two deer and, more worryingly, one dead human, face down in the river.

Although interacting with dead bodies certainly is a health concern, no one is blaming the creators of Pokémon Go for the incident, and it is doubtful that anyone is predicting that corpse discovery will become a regular issue.

The main, overarching health concern surrounding Pokémon Go is simple: people are not paying attention to where they are going. Injuries are rife and, as the game grows ever more popular, this is likely to worsen.

Already, official warnings have been released by the New York City Transit (NYCT) Authority, New York’s Department of Motor Vehicles and Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the NYCT Subway, the New South Wales police in Australia, and the Arizona, Sarasota, and Virginia police departments; the list goes on.

Even more worrying are reports of people being caught playing the game while driving. That is a health concern that needs no explanation whatsoever. And, to a lesser degree, if people are driving on their search for Pokémon, it negates any benefits that could be gained from increased walking.

The most extreme Pokémon Go incident to date occurred last Wednesday in North San Diego County. Two men in their early 20s fell off a bluff while playing the game. One fell at least 75 feet, the other around 50 feet. Both were rescued and suffered “moderate injuries.”

To summarize, there may be some genuine health benefits to playing Pokémon Go; alleviating loneliness and depression, and reducing the chances of premature death are all valiant outcomes. The only real downside, as far as health is concerned, is that players are not paying enough attention to their surroundings.

Regardless of the warnings, people are not likely to pay full attention while they interact with the world of Pokémon Go. The Pokémon-fueled “trespassing epidemic” will no doubt continue, as will stories of people walking into traffic and trees.

Black August

Black August

First published in 1934, Black August is set in a terrifying future Europe on the verge of collapse; financial breakdown and revolution, civilian panic, street-fighting and an uncontrolled exodus from the cities to the countryside, where bands of starving people wander, pillaging for food. Out of the terror and the bloodshed steps the former British secret agent Gregory Sallust, to take the leadership of a group of men and women seeking only to survive: to lead them through bitter hardship and terrible hazard to a rural settlement which they fortify against invasion, and which, at first, seems reasonably secure.

An Astrophysicist Used Math To Show Melania Trump Stole Her Speech

Since Melania Trump got caught red-handed at the Republican National Convention Monday night appropriating passages from a speech Michelle Obama delivered in 2008, Donald Trump’s team has engaged in a breathtaking effort to gaslight America.

Paul Manafort and others from the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s campaign have even attempted to argue that it’s simply a coincidence, and that both women used “common” words.

McGill University astrophysicist Robert Rutledge is having none of it.

In a series of posts to Twitter and Facebook, Rutledge ran the numbers, breaking down the disputed passages into distinct phrases of a few words each ― “word is your bond,” “because we want our children,” “willingness to work for them” and so on. Based on this analysis, he determined there’s something like a 1 in 87 billion chance that Melania Trump and Michelle Obama would use such similar language.

On Facebook, Rutledge puts it like this:

So let’s just give that all those words are from a limited number that Melania Trump could have used, and just give the fact that the thematic thrust is the same as Michelle Obama’s passage.

And let’s just ask the simple, calculable question: What is the probability that, giving Melania Trump the same distinct phrases as used by Michelle Obama, they are used in exactly the same order? […]

According to this calculation, there are a grand total of about 87 billion different permutations for those 14 distinct phrases. That’s 87,000,000,000 ― or about the number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy.

So never mind Manafort’s claim that there are a limited number of words in the English language. For Melania Trump to have gotten all 14 of those phrases, in the same order as Michelle Obama did at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, is a chance of 1 in 87 billion ― about 7000 times less likely than winning lotto 6/49.

Highly unlikely.

Sad!

Rutledge, 48, told The Huffington Post that the numbers would change under different assumptions about, for example, the number of distinct phrases. But the clear conclusion would still be that, mathematically, it’s extremely unlikely Trump just happened to use the same language as Obama.

Rutledge, who plans to vote for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in November, said it took him just minutes to conceive and execute his analysis. “It’s something that’s taught in high school,” he said in an interview.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

Three Freedoms Worth Fighting For

Another Independence Day just passed, and I have always loved it for the fireworks. As a self-proclaimed “fireworks snob,” I have strict criteria for what constitutes a great show. Sitting in the grass rather than on concrete benches and not fighting a crowd are a couple of my “must haves.” But, the 4th of July is more than just “oohs and aahs,” it serves as a reminder that living in the U.S grants us more freedom than much of the world, and this year, it made me think about what really defines freedom. It means different things to each of us but there are certain freedoms that are universally valuable. Today I’m sharing three freedoms worth fighting for.

FREEDOM FROM SELF-CRITICISM: How we talk to ourselves plays a big role in our overall happiness. For whatever reason, it’s in our nature to be tough on ourselves. We have an average of 60,000 thoughts a day. That is a lot of opportunity to feed our brain! It takes awareness and practice to make sure that we are giving ourselves positive and encouraging messages. For example, when you look in the mirror in the morning, do you appreciate something about your appearance, or does your focus go straight to the extra pounds or new wrinkles? Start paying attention to how you talk to yourself. It has a direct correlation to how happy and satisfied we feel in our lives, and is often reflected in how tough we are on others. If you wouldn’t say it to your best friend, don’t say it to yourself. What standard are we holding ourselves, and others to? Being human means we don’t always look, feel or behave our best.

FREEDOM FROM “SHOULD”S: We live in a time where despite all the challenges, there is also a move towards less rules and constraints. Compared to our grandparents, we have more freedom of choice in every area of life: to marry or not, have children or not, divorce or stay together, work at one job for life or change careers (as many times as we choose), be a working mom or stay at home with children, leave our hometowns and relocate, travel the world, and many more. Most of our “should’s” come from our own self- judgement and perceived limitations. For any one thing that we feel we can’t or shouldn’t do in our lives, there are plenty of examples of people who have done it and lived to tell about it. Try counting the number of times you say “should” in a day and challenge yourself to bust through them to make new and more empowered choices.

FREEDOM FROM EXCESSIVE WORRY: Worrying from time-to-time is natural. Worrying excessively, however, steals joy from life and sucks our energy and sense of well-being. There is a difference between worry and anxiety. “Normal” worry is usually based on a specific situation, has a time limit and feels as though it can be contained. Anxiety tends to be more compulsive and invades other activities; it can be brought on for no identifiable reason, and go on for months or years. If you identify yourself as a “worrier,” begin to make notes on your calendar, helping to track how much you are worrying and what is causing you this stress. Is it time-limited or a long-term pattern for which you need additional support and help to overcome? Are the things you are worrying about real problems that you can solve? If so, create a step-by-step plan to do so. Embrace the saying that “action cures fear” and do something to get out of your head and into solutions.

6 Things Obama Can Teach Us About Self-Care In Stressful Times

You are not the president of the United States. But chances are you too have real stressors in your life that make it feel as though the weight of the world is on your shoulders.

There’s a way to break free. Upon examining the daily routine of President Obama, it becomes clear that the commander-in-chief lives a life carefully constructed to avoid burnout, promote wellbeing and remain as stress-free as possible. Below are a few moves from his presidential playbook you can borrow in order to do the same:

1. Learn how you recharge best (even if it’s alone).

Extroverts gain energy from being around other people, but introverts need solo time to reboot. While President Clinton reportedly spent his free time chatting on the phone, President Obama spends four to five quiet hours alone in his office every day. “For some of our presidential leaders, the energy they need comes from contact with other people,” historian Doris Kearns Goodwin told the New York Times. “[Obama] seems to be somebody who is at home with himself.” Likewise, learn how your personality recharges best, and practice it.

2. Take breaks to play.

During his early White House days, Obama had a standing date every night ― not to sift through paperwork or make business calls, but to play pool with a friend. Indeed, taking a break can make you more productive, even if it’s just 10 minutes away from your desk during the day.

3. Block off time for the people you love.

Obama eats dinner with his daughters every day, and his family goes on vacation together each year. It turns out he’s onto something: Regular hangouts with best friends or family members have been shown to reduce anxiety, boost happiness and even extend your lifespan

4. Keep things in perspective.

When it comes to handling extreme stress, Obama has one major key. “I think the most important thing is to take the long view,” he told HuffPost in a 2015 interview. To him, that means keeping in mind that what seems like a failure today won’t seem so important tomorrow, next month or in a year.

5. Eliminate unnecessary decisions.

Some of the world’s most successful people free up mental space by turning small, everyday decisions into routines. Take Obama’s wardrobe, for example. “You’ll see I wear only gray or blue suits,” he told Vanity Fair in 2012. “I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.”

How can you adopt this practice at home? To feel a greater sense of control, make your morning or your workout schedule routines you can emulate every day.

6. Exercise often.

Obama credits regular workouts with keeping stress levels under control throughout his presidency. “I’ve been very consistent about exercising in the morning,” Obama told HuffPost. Regular exercise can reduce your risk of heart disease, improve your mood and even ease anxiety and depression. Now THAT is a habit worth holding on to.

FDR Was Right

I was talking with a friend the other day, and she was telling me about the trip that she and her husband were planning. It was to be in two weeks… in France.

Needless to say, the couple is now uncertain of their plans. And though she said they’ll likely still go, it’s something they’ll be sitting down to discuss.

I can completely understand their concern. It’s such a horrible situation what happened in Nice. As well as earlier in the year in Paris. And I told her that I don’t know what I would do in their situation. While I suspect the same as them, probably go, it’s impossible to know until I faced it. It’s a very real question.

I did offer one piece of information, though. Not offered remotely as “advice” but as perspective to throw in the mix when they talk things over.

Terrorism is often viewed from the deaths it causes, and that view understandably overwhelms most other thoughts about it — but the reality is that the main intent of terrorism is generally to cause paralyzing fear. Which it does overwhelmingly more than cause deaths. The tragedy in Nice killed 84 people, which is gut-wrenching. And understandably it got world news, headlines around the clock, the near-entirety of the news cycle, and kept France as a nation under Emergency Law.

For perspective’s sake, last year in the U.S., 38,000 people were killed by cars. That works out to averaging 105 people killed a day. Every single day. Day after day after unrelenting day. 105 people killed in a car accident today and tomorrow and the next day and day after and after. Non-stop. Month after month after year after year after year. 105 people killed by a car every single day. Yet no one even blinks at that. We accept it, almost without thought. We accept it as the price of the convenience, to the extent that most people don’t even see it as a price. The sun comes up and 105 people will be killed by a car that day. And the next. And yesterday. And the day before. And before. Pass the coffee. I of course understand the situations are different. But they’re not as totally different as one might try to make them. The intent is different, but the end result the same. And for all the differences, context still helps.

Or another perspective: Last year, throughout all of Western Europe, under 200 people were killed in terrorist attacks for the entire year. More people than that we killed by car crashes in the U.S. over just two days.

Or from 2001-2014 (that’s as far as the stats went), more American were killed by falling furniture (293) than by terrorist attacks in Western Europe and the U.S. combined.

Really.

I know that it’s one thing to read cold, dispassionate “stats” and another thing to personally face a reality. And I don’t know what the proper answer is to my friends’ travel plans — or anyone’s travel plans. Or concerns over the horrors of terrorism. It’s deeply serious, tragic and worrisome. And significantly more so in other areas of the world that western society is separated from. But I still just passed along the information to my friends as one thing to include in their discussion.

Because in the end, the point of terrorism is… to terrorize. And one death can do that. And “intent” is a problem of its own. But the expanded reality is that long before the concerns of terrorism, as well as during the concerns, we have had mass killing by crazed people who also intended to do harm. Whether in all the mass shootings that we know of all too well, or domestic violence, or bombings like in Oklahoma City or at abortion clinic, or anyone there were sick people out to cause harm. And not only do they rarely bring society to a screeching halt, but we’re often told, “Now is not the time” to concern ourselves with fixing them.

The deaths in Nice were galling. 84 people dead. And more attacks throughout the world.

But last year, in just the United States alone, 38,000 people were killed by cars. Around the world, the number becomes astronomical — 1.24 million people are killed by cars a year, every year. There are 32,000 people killed with a gun each year, in only the U.S. 370,000 people around the world drown each year. 1.2 million people in the U.S. alone die every year of heart disease or cancer. And almost none of this phases people. Death is a sad part of our lives we mourn and accept.

Terrorism is a worldwide problem that not only must be addressed, but is. The point of terrorism is to paralyze people with fear.

In Nice, 84 people were tragically killed, and the world came to a halt. It was a horrific, sickening act. And the very same day, 3,400 other people around the world were killed by a car. And no one gave it a thought. And 3,400 more people died in a car death the next day. And the next. And will again today. And will tomorrow.

Yes, in terrorism, someone is making an intentional attempt to cause many deaths. But so too was someone attempting to do the same at people going to see a movie in Aurora. Or those going to see Trainwreck at a movie theater in Lafayette. Or students just going to school at Columbine — or going to school at Virginia Tech or at New Town. Or those working in Oklahoma City. Or at any of the other far-too many just as intentional mass killings that are caused by someone who wasn’t a terrorist. Yet which have caused far more deaths. On and on and on, just as regularly. All of which were intentional, to just masses of people. Yet none of this has stopped people from going to movies or going to school or going to work. Or brought about national emergency laws. Or even simply changed national laws for the use of a gun. (We can’t even pass a law to prohibit a suspected terrorist on the No-Fly List from owning a gun.) We mourned, offered prayers, and went on with our lives. The world did not come to a half .Which the world shouldn’t. Yet when 84 people are killed by what is presumed to be a terrorist — though not yet even established — we (for absolutely human reasons) consider not even traveling to a country. And half the country nominates a man for president who wants to ban all people because of their faith from simply entering the border.

Perspective matters.

Society must and does work to contribute massive resources to combat terrorism. It is a much-too real and devastating threat. And if we kept doing that and also put one-tenth the effort, money, time and attention to combat cancer, heart disease, guns, cars safety, all the seemingly insignificant oversights that kill so many in the U.S. and around the world, even things that appear so small and almost stupid as the ability to swim and poorly-made furniture — we might be able to save the lives of several million people a year around the world. Each and every single year. After year. After year. Millions. Including you. And me.

This is not said at all to diminish concerns or raise awareness of anything. It is to put a perspective on what the world is focused on, in order to better address all what needs to be addressed.

The point of terrorism is to paralyze people with fear. And it is always easier to work to solve a problem — any problem, all problems, always, since the beginning of time — when you are not paralyzed with fear.

We work to solve problems. We mourn loss. And the only thing we have to fear, it turns out, is indeed fear itself.

How We Can Come Together When Our World Is Falling Apart

2016-07-18-1468850246-141222-BWWD30SFX0.jpg

Here we are, a week later with more images of terror and broken bodies and weeping after Friday’s attack in Nice. And just as I was about to publish this post yesterday, I learned about the policemen shot in Baton Rouge. Then shortly after, the protests in Cleveland.

It seems we must decide for ourselves if we will become who the media says we are becoming. Or if we won’t. If we will prove them wrong and become something new up and out of all these ashes.

I want to be a new. Do you?

But it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It doesn’t happen when we’re huddled up on ” a side” or hiding for fear of it all. It happens in relationship. We’ve got to come together when the world seems to be falling apart.

That’s a pleasant thing to say and a harder thing to do. Not because we don’t want to, but mostly because we don’t know how. Sure we can cling to those who are like us and those who agree with us. But what about those who think, act, and look differently than we do?

How do we come together for real, rather than just throwing words around?

Last week, I wrote about how we must humble ourselves and listen to one another. But what does that look like in action?

First, it looks like being honest about our own brokenness. Admitting our fears and hang-ups. Opening the hatch on the junk we tend to keep locked in the trunk.

The first step is being humble and admitting to ourselves and to God,

I am broken too. I do things that hurt others and hurt myself. I cannot point to the specks in other people’s eyes until I acknowledge and ask for help removing the 2×4’s in my own.

Because the 2×4’s in our own eyes are often the things blurring and skewing our vision. They keep us from seeing clearly what is really going on in the lives of others.

Second, it looks like getting to know the 2×4’s in our own eyes.

We tend to think of our enemies as outside of us, but the most dangerous one can hide within. The 2×4’s in our own eyes are often set with a strong sense of pride, which makes them hard to see.

We can all use help finding these any day of the week. So, try this…

Consider these statements not only for the inciters and perpetrators of hate and terror, but also for people in your community, your neighborhood, your office, and even your home.

  • He/she does/says ____________, and I would never…
  • He/she is absolutely wrong about _________ because…
  • He/she will is never willing to see my side of_______________.
  • He/she doesn’t deserve my respect because ______________.

Am I saying there are not absolutes in this world when it comes to moral conditions?

Not at all.

But I am saying that judgment is to come not from us but from Elsewhere. And it’s not made based on appearance or what we think we see, it’s evaluated by what’s in a heart.  And you and I can’t see what’s in a heart, what experiences make a heart beat the way it does.

So third, we must admit we may not have the whole story.

That there is absolutely more to the other person than meets the eye.

And fourth, we need to learn something about him or her.

We need to lay our 2×4’s down, so we can make eye contact, really see the person with an open mind. Whether the person is warm to our effort or not, we won’t be offended (because remember, we are operating without 2×4’s). We can simply say, “I’m sorry we’re in this spot. How can we figure this out together?” Then, listen.

This is where healing starts in our families, our neighborhoods, and our nation. With acknowledgement of our own brokenness and 2×4’s… then the healing words, “Let’s help each other.”

Because we are exponentially more together than we can ever be apart.

If we really want to do something about the mess we’re in, then we can apply this process to one person who rubs us wrong this week.

Shall we do it together?

If you are struggling with anxiety and fear in the midst of all this upheaval, here is a free guided meditation for you.

Train (Your Brain) Like An Olympian

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games are just a few weeks away and our nation’s greatest athletes are making their final push to prepare their minds and bodies to compete on the world’s stage.

We hear a lot about the physical and mental components of competition like this, and understandably so – both are important in their own way and absolutely critical to an Olympian’s success.

According to the latest Center for BrainHealth research, both components are also critical to improving and maintaining our brain health and building brain resilience as each type of exercise produces distinct brain benefits.

Results reinforce the importance of healthy lifestyle habits that exercise both the mind and body, to maximize our brain’s potential throughout life.

For the study, a group of 36 sedentary adults ages 56-75 years were randomized into two different groups where they received either cognitive or physical training. Neurocognitive, physiological, and MRI data were taken before, during and after training.

Group A received Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Training (SMART), a manualized brain training developed at the Center for BrainHealth. The training focuses on three executive functions: strategic attention (prioritizing brain resources); integrative reasoning (synthesizing information at a deeper level); and innovation (encouraging fluid thinking, diverse perspective-taking, and problem solving). The best way I can think to explain this type of exercise is to ask you to think like a reporter. By that I mean to synthesize the message and expand to a broader audience.

Healthy adults who participated demonstrated positive changes in executive brain function as well as a 7.9 percent increase in global brain flow with regional increases in the frontal cortex (our brain’s reasoning and decision-making center).

This is huge! If a pill achieved these results, the drug would be wildly sought after and prescribed. Consider that we can lose 1-2 percent in global brain blood flow every decade, starting in our 20s and that decrease is associated with declines in cognition. To see almost an 8 percent increase in brain blood flow in the cognitive training group may be seen as regaining decades of brain health since blood flow is linked to neural health. Many adults without dementia experience slow, continuous and significant age-related changes in the brain, specifically in the areas of memory and executive function – so finding ways to reverse these changes are critically important.

Meanwhile, Group B engaged in aerobic exercise. Participants completed three, 60-minute sessions per week that included five minutes of warm-up and cool down with 50 minutes of either walking on a treadmill or cycling on a stationary bike while maintaining 50-75 percent of maximum heart rate.

This group showed significant improvement in immediate and delayed memory performances that were not seen in the cognitive training group. Additionally, exercisers with improved memory performance also showed higher cerebral blood flow in the bilateral hippocampi, an area underlying memory function and particularly vulnerable to aging and dementia.

The takeaway is mind-boggling, truly. To embrace the fact that we can enhance our brain function by our physical and mental activities is welcome news since we are living longer lives. Indeed both aerobic activity and reasoning training are valuable, readily accessible and inexpensive tools that give our brain a boost in very different ways. The key, now, is to figure out how to best unite these training protocols for the highest health returns starting early and continuing into late life.

In the near future, we fully expect to have comprehensive training programs for the brain — similar to the training programs used by our Olympic athletes — to get and keep our minds in peak condition throughout life.

Future trials are needed to further develop and test such neuroprotective programs, but thanks to this study, we are well on our way.

Dietary Chinese Herbs

This work presents up-to-date information on chemical, pharmacological, clinical studies and historical uses of common dietary Chinese herbs. Authored by native experts in the field, the reader is introduced to each herb with a brief chronological review of Chinese literature on dietary herb uses, with chapters dedicated to each selected herb including color photos for each herb. In addition, Chinese characters as well as the Latin botanical name indices, and chemical structures for the known active compounds are also provided. The clear layout examines the health benefits that have been studied for centuries, including current clinical and toxicological data. A wide range of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbs are investigated for their suitability into daily diets for maintaining general wellness or disease prevention. In the past decades, natural health products, dietary supplements, functional foods, or nutraceuticals have emerged in the West due to the increasing demand for non-pharmaceutical healthcare products. Traditional Chinese Medicine disease prevention and treatment incorporates the use of foods, and herbal medicine in an integrated manner, and thus the dietary Chinese herbs in used in TCM for thousands of years could be sources for developing new, effective, and safe ingredients to capture the rapidly expanding opportunity in the global market place.

Obama Calls Baton Rouge Police Shooting ‘The Work Of Cowards Who Speak For No One’

President Barack Obama condemned the killing of three police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, saying there is “no justification” for violence against law enforcement.

“These attacks are the work of cowards who speak for no one,” Obama said in a statement Sunday. “They right no wrongs. They advance no causes.”

The three officers were shot while responding to another shooting less than one mile from police headquarters. Their deaths come less than two weeks after the killing of Alton Sterling, who was shot to death by Baton Rouge police in a case that drew national attention, and just 10 days after a sniper attack left five police officers dead during a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas.

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump tweeted about the shooting Sunday, calling America “divided.”

Read Obama’s full statement below:

I condemn, in the strongest sense of the word, the attack on law enforcement in Baton Rouge. For the second time in two weeks, police officers who put their lives on the line for ours every day were doing their job when they were killed in a cowardly and reprehensible assault. These are attacks on public servants, on the rule of law, and on civilized society, and they have to stop.

I’ve offered my full support, and the full support of the federal government, to Governor Edwards, Mayor Holden, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Baton Rouge Police Department. And make no mistake – justice will be done.

We may not yet know the motives for this attack, but I want to be clear: there is no justification for violence against law enforcement. None. These attacks are the work of cowards who speak for no one. They right no wrongs. They advance no causes. The officers in Baton Rouge; the officers in Dallas – they were our fellow Americans, part of our community, part of our country, with people who loved and needed them, and who need us now – all of us – to be at our best.

Today, on the Lord’s day, all of us stand united in prayer with the people of Baton Rouge, with the police officers who’ve been wounded, and with the grieving families of the fallen. May God bless them all.

The Silent Languages

It is Day Two of one of my headaches, which usually last for three. It is morning, and I am in bed, my head wrapped in a black-and-white Yasser Arafat scarf, one forearm pressed hard against my skull and the other resting on my husband’s chest.

It is on this latter arm that the jazz musician with whom I live is “playing,” with the fingers of one hand, a tune. A silent tune, as my skinny forearm is no trumpet.

Dean knows that, while the pain in my left temple is relentless, language–of any sort–will tempt me out of the hole down which pain thrusts me. Eventually, I will have to know . . . what tune he is playing. Eventually, the language which he speaks so fluently, and hears constantly within his cranium, and which I can only hear (and then, imperfectly), when a band performs it, will charm me (as the flute, the cobra).

“What are you playing?” I ask, eventually.

He smiles and, in his endearing falsetto, pipes a bar or two. “‘Spring is Here,'” he interjects.

“By?”

“Rodgers and Hart. Stan Kenton.”

“So, I have an entire orchestra playing here? On my arm?”

The fingers are onto something else, however. “Now, what?”

“‘Yesterdays.’ By Kern and Harbach. Stan Kenton again, though.”

Not skipping a beat, he begins ‘Stompin’ At The Savoy.’

Lying here, in almost total silence, one of us speaking through the fingers of a hand, the other listening, clumsily, through the skin of a forearm, we are something like the members of two early, isolated tribes of homo sapiens, upon first contact. I will never have time enough to learn the language-of-jazz in which my spouse has been steeped since early childhood. And, by this point in our marriage, I know he will never learn the proper use of “went” and “gone”: his participles will remain, for this grammarian, blood-curdling, lo, unto the grave, whichever of us arrives there first.

“I’ve never went to . . .” says Dean.

“Gone to!” says Elizabeth. “Gone!*&%”

When one of us is in pain, in the little co-mingled tribe that is this marriage, the silent languages predominate: those comprising simply sounds, as opposed to words; those expressed through touch.

Throughout my husband’s surgery of a month ago, and my own headaches, we have spoken, for the most part, without a lot of words. In fact, because I myself am so beset and beleaguered by words, living with a musician, who communicates primarily and happily and by choice via sounds alone, most of those sounds mediated by instruments (and, so, at a remove of one or two from the human breath or the human hand, or both), I have found being with Dean a relief, a refuge.

In our house, there is much music, but most of it comes without lyrics.

Which is not to say we do not communicate profoundly. We communicate, with all our various languages, signs, and signals, across most silences and distances. But we speak best, usually, without words.

What, I wonder, did Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis “say,” upon first encountering one another, over 100,000 years ago, somewhere in the Middle East? What was communicated in that first gaze?

In the way that we “use” language, and considering the languages we have chosen to learn well, even over the short course of our shared time on the planet, my husband and I could be members of different species. Here, we have an instance of Homo trumpetensis taking up residence with Homo comma-oxfordensis
.
No wonder one of us seems always to have a headache (she said, smiling).

Lost in Translation: “Saudade” & “Hiraeth”

We are losing human languages, year by year, as we lose the last native speakers of each.

Languages go extinct with their speakers, unless studied, recorded, and preserved for prosperity, and many, many human languages (I think, just, of all the extinct aboriginal languages of Australia) were gone before . . . we knew it. In this new century, with the death of their last-standing native speakers, we have lost Klallam, Linvonian, the Cromarty dialect of Scots, and Pazeh, along with at least 14 other distinct tongues.

Tongues: given my husband’s (and Koko the gorilla’s]) fluent fingers, tongues and breath are not essential for communication, but most languages may still be called tongues.

Language has ever been based on breath. And tongues. Both human.

And, with every year, and every year of globalization, the tongues we speak decline in number. Soon, we will be left with what, which? Chinese? Spanish? English? Hindi? And, then? Just Chinese?

I grieve the loss of all tongues for, in and through each, we have expressed what is almost impossible to express in others.

There is one, solitary Portuguese word, saudade, for example, which originated in Galician, and for which English (and perhaps all other languages) has no twin, no cognate (or “blood relative”).

Saudade (as per Wikipedia) “describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return. A stronger form of saudade might be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing, moved away, separated, or died. Saudade was once described as ‘the love that remains’ after someone is gone.

Saudade is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live again. It can be described as an emptiness, like someone (e.g., one’s children, parents, sibling, grandparents, friends, pets) or something (e.g., places, things one used to do in childhood, or other activities performed in the past) that should be there in a particular moment but is missing, and the individual feels this absence. It brings sad and happy feelings all together, sadness for missing and happiness for having experienced the feeling.

“In Portuguese, Tenho saudades tuas(European Portuguese) or Tenho saudades de você (Brazilian Portuguese), translates as ‘I have saudade of you,’ meaning ‘I miss you,’ but carries a much stronger tone. In fact, one can have saudade of someone whom one is with, but have some feeling of loss towards the past or the future.

“In Brazil, the Day of Saudade is officially celebrated on 30 January.”

I, myself, “have saudade of” the lost languages of Klallam, Linvonian, the Cromarty dialect of Scots, and Pazeh, along with the other 14 tongues which have gone extinct since the year 2000. I have saudade, as well, of all those lost languages whose names I will never even know.

For me, in a sense, every day is The Day of Saudade.

And then, there is the Welsh word hiraeth. Wikipedia: “The University of Wales, Lampeter, attempts to define it as homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed. It is a mix of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness, or an earnest desire for the Wales of the past.

“Oxford and Merriam-Webster define hiraeth as: (noun) ‘a homesickness for a home you cannot return to, or that never was.’

If this sounds familiar: “Hiraeth bears considerable similarities with the Portuguese concept of saudade (a key theme in Fado music), Brazilian Portuguese banzo (more related to homesickness), Turkish gurbet, Galician morriña, Romanian dor.”

So, whatever language we speak, or no longer speak, we Homo sapiens, trumpetensis, and/or comma-oxfordensis, have coined a plethora of words with which to express À la recherche du temps perdu.

Extinction is a concept with which we have long been acquainted, but with which we are never, ever, comfortable.

Breath & Dragon’s Breath

Recently, in my ongoing, Oedipal, and Conradian quest to nail down just when and through what mechanism runaway climate change will effect the Sixth Extinction, a planetary cataclysm resembling the great Permian die-off, in which fully 83 percent of Earth’s genera went extinct, I came across a long, peer-reviewed article by marine biologist Dr. Ronald L. Shimek, former chair of the Biology Department at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, assistant director of the Bamfield Marine Science Centre on Vancouver Island, Canada, and a “CORAL Magazine” senior editor. (The version of the essay which I cite here, and which is available online is this one: http://www.reef2rainforest.com/2016/04/22/dragon-watch/)

Dr. Shimek, while researching coral reef extinctions, one of his areas of expertise, stumbled upon the research of Dr. Natalia E. Shakhova, “a Russian oceanographer and geologist who has been studying the permafrost methane distribution throughout the offshore region of the Laptev Sea known as the Eastern Siberian Arctic Shelf (or ESAS in scientific circles) and the adjacent onshore areas.”

Shakhova’s research has been in another neck of our shared woods, entirely, from that of Shimek. Her focus is the release of methane into the atmosphere, and the probability that the next great planetary extinction will be caused by a catastrophic release of the gas also known as “Dragon’s Breath.”

Quoting from Shimek’s piece: “[Shakhova] estimates the [methane] clathrate deposits in the ESAS to be between hundreds and thousands of gigatons. This is not easy to visualize, but the total mass of carbon in living plants and animals on Earth has been estimated at 500 gigatons, making these buried deposits of solidified methane unimaginably huge in the true sense of the word. Some observers have dubbed the collective, buried power of these deposits the ‘Methane Dragon.'”

Shimek continues: “In 2010, Shakhova and her co-workers estimated that a catastrophic methane release in excess of 50 gigatons (a minuscule percentage of what is in that area) is possible at any time. She said, and continues to assert, that such a catastrophic release could take place over a period of one to ten years. The fear is not the potential explosive effect–terrifying caribou in the wild, barren north–but rather the massive infusion of enormous clouds of potent greenhouse gas into Earth’s atmosphere. As a result of her work, the question that needs to be asked is this: ‘Are her estimates of catastrophic release reasonable and possible? And, if they are, what difference would that make?'”

Shimek concludes his essay (and what can I really do but quote him at length?): “When and how things might unfold is profoundly uncertain, but the trigger point for the short-term catastrophic methane release postulated by Dr. Shakhova could be a temperature rise as low as an additional 1.5°C or as high as an additional 10°C. These are not the rantings of fearmongers, but scenarios described by respected Arctic oceanographers. The 50-gigaton decadal methane pulse scenario posited by Shakhova, Semiletov, and Alekseev, who are probably the leading experts on Arctic methane and methane ices, is considered plausible by scientists at the UK Meteorology Office, as well as multiple scientific reviews, including one written by more than 20 Arctic specialists. Current Arctic atmospheric methane concentrations are unprecedented, but the best minds believe that if 50 Gt were added to the atmosphere, conditions would become very bad, very fast. It would be, some experts fear, the beginning of ‘runaway global warming’ that humans would be powerless to stop.

“Given an effective meltdown of methane clathrates in the Arctic, climate expert Dr. Malcolm Light has estimated global temperatures of around 50°C above averages between the years 2040 and 2050. In summer, if the normal average had been 30°C (for example, where I live in Montana), the post-methane belch temperature would rise to 80°C or 176°F.

“While the timing is unclear, the consequences can be predicted with some certainty. They include: Complete melting of polar ice caps; global flooding; Disruption of global ocean currents and gyres; demise of oceanic fisheries; Crop and food production failures; Spread of disease and parasites; Collapse of power grids and transportation systems; Mass human mortality in heat and cold waves; Catastrophic breakdowns in political, economic, and societal stability.”

Shimek concludes: “There is no easy way to write these words: Should such an event occur, it is certain that the coral reefs I set out to research would have no chance of survival. More to the point, most of us would perish.”

While We Have Breath

Other scientists believe all of us will perish, and the event will occur before the end of the current century. Day by day, I review the science, and it seems, to me, incontrovertible. The Sixth Extinction, the one brought about by mankind, will occur in the lifetime of our grandchildren, and it will snuff out every last creature “with breath,” and most without, on our shared planet.

If I, with my small knowledge of science, know this truth to be self-evident, how long will it take my peers in “The Reading West” to surpass me in my researches? I would like to think that many, many of us will come “online” with the science rapidly, and turn global attention to what appears to be just ahead for us all.

In thinking out loud about extinction here, I have begun with the extinction of languages but, perhaps just after my own sojourn on the planet ends, and the small extinction my death will signify, language itself will become extinct along with any being who parsed, or will ever parse, language.

Based upon and an expression of the consciousness of Homo sapiens (and Homo sapiens‘ forebears), language–the concept, the thing itself–will disappear with us, as though it, and we, never were.

Floating through space on the wings of Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecrafts were, are, the so-called Pioneer plaques, humankind’s early-1970s “messages in a bottle” to the universe. If and when they are “received,” and if ever they are “understood” by other beings–a possibility so remote as to defy all probability–perhaps someone, somewhere, in some dimension, may know that we lived and breathed: but the likelihood of our still being here then appears nil.

The enormity of that realization is now being pondered by relatively few homo sapiens, but will affect each and every one of us, whether we choose to inform ourselves, or not.

And many of us–the current ponderers–believe the time has long since passed when we might have avoided the iceberg, or the dragon’s breath. The time now is for pondering alone. For facing the music as we can.

Readers still with me here may want to explore the writings of Dr. Guy McPherson and, perhaps, join me on Facebook in the (closed) group, Near Term Human Extinction Support Group.

We who speak and breathe and touch and sing now face the end of humankind’s tenure on Earth, and we will together be choosing how we face it; not if, or when.

While I have breath, and while I may be heard, I will continue saying, “Choose. Choose how we go forward. Choose together.”

We have no other choices left us, we who coined the words saudade and hiraeth.

7 Ways Your Height Affects Your Health

At 6 feet, 8 inches, Dr. Eeric Truumees literally stands out. “People remember who I am,” says the orthopedic surgeon in Austin, Texas. But despite height’s association with social and professional benefits, such as appearing more attractive and earning more money, towering over others has downfalls, too. “The bane of my height has been hitting my head on things,” Truumees finds, “and as I get a little slower and little less flexible, I find I’m doing that more often.” That’s just the start of height’s influence on health. Here are seven medical issues that may disproportionately affect people who are taller or shorter than average:

1. Longevity

From an evolutionary perspective, there’s a price for enjoying the perks of being tall: a shorter lifespan. As the theory goes, “growing faster and being bigger will mean that you’ll have a shorter life, and we’ve seen that in rats,” says Mary Schooling, a professor at the City University of New York School of Public Health and Health Policy. But in humans, how the theory plays out isn’t quite clear. While certain genes have been linked to both short stature and long life, and shorter populations also seem to live longer, it’s tough to know whether stature itself influences lifespan or if characteristics like nutrition, socioeconomic status and disease risk are responsible.

2. Cancer

If you think about what cancer is ― abnormal cells multiplying out of control ― “being taller and having a higher risk of cancer makes some sort of sense,” Schooling says, since more cells might mean more opportunity for a cancer-causing mutation. That explanation plays out in the research on hormone-related cancers, such as breast, ovarian and prostate, which are more common among the height-gifted. Growth hormone, too, may play a role in the development of cancer, since studies suggest that a lack of it lowers your risk of the disease. “That would be another possible pathway,” Schooling says.

3. Heart disease and diabetes

Here’s one area where short people get the, well, short end of the stick: They seem to be more prone to heart disease and diabetes, research indicates. “Greater height might allow larger, more robust blood vessels,” Schooling explains. Or, perhaps taller people tend to be protected from cardiometabolic conditions because they were fed healthier diets as children or grew up in an environment where they were less exposed to infections. “We don’t know for sure if it’s really truly the height, or whether it’s something else which makes you taller and protects you against cardiovascular disease,” Schooling says.

4. Lung transplantation

Whether in line at the deli counter or separated from friends at a concert, short people can be at a disadvantage when seeking attention. That tendency can be particularly detrimental if those folks are waiting for a lung transplant: Research suggests people 5 feet, 3 inches or shorter wait longer for the organ and are more likely to die in the process than organ recipients with more average heights. The authors suggest adjusting the transplant process – including potentially surgically “downsizing” too-big lungs – to address the disparity.

5. Injuries

Not only are tall people more injury-prone, but their injuries are often worse than those experienced by the shorter set. “Taller patients, when they take a fall, they’re going to go a lot further and … the impact will be higher,” Truumees says, noting that older tall people have higher rates of hip fracture. Some data suggests lanky people may also be crippled by slower reactions times, he adds, since their nerve impulses have farther to travel. Professional athletes, for one, know the consequences of this phenomenon all too well: Towering players, Truumees says, tend to have higher rates of injury and take longer to recover than their littler teammates.

6. Blood clots

Long legs: Great if you’re a model, not-so-great if you’re on a long plane ride, wearing a cast as you recover from surgery or are otherwise unable to move your leg muscles frequently to prevent blood clots, Truumees says. Indeed, one study found that men 6 feet or taller were 2.6 times more likely to develop venous thromboembolism than men at least four inches shorter; men who were both tall and obese were more than five times as likely to develop the condition. “Those people need to be very careful,” Truumees says, since, in the most severe cases, blood clots can travel to the lungs and cause death.

7. Spine, neck and back problems

Most workspaces aren’t designed with non-average heights in mind: “Short people, tall people – they’re all working around the same cubicle or work unit, and that can cause all kinds of back and neck problems,” particularly for the tall ones, who are more prone to spine conditions like scoliosis, says Truumees, director of spine research at the Seton Spine and Scoliosis Center in Austin. While ensuring your workspace is ergonomically correct helps, some environments, like planes, can’t be altered – much to Truumees’s disappointment. “They say life is about the journey, not the destination,” he says, “but for me, it’s the destination – the journey is not all that fun.”

The Roman Navy: Ships, Men and Warfare 350 BC-AD 475

The Roman Navy: Ships, Men and Warfare 350 BC-AD 475

The Roman Navy was remarkable for its size, reach and longevity. As significant as the Royal Navy was to the British Empire in the nineteenth century, the Roman Navy was crucial to the extraordinary expansion of Imperial power and for its maintenance over a period of more than 800 years. The fabric and organisation of this maritime force is at the core of this new book. At the height of its power the Roman Navy was, at least in numerical terms, the largest maritime force ever to have existed. It employed tens of thousands of sailors and maintained and fought fleets of ships larger than any forces since. In these pages the author looks at all the aspects of the Navy in turn. Shipbuilding, rigs and fittings, and shipboard weaponry are covered as are all the principal ship from the earliest types to the very last. The command structure is outlined, as are all aspects of the crews’ lives, their recruitment, terms of service, training and uniforms. Life onboard, food and drink, discipline, religion and superstition are described, while seamanship and navigation are dealt with along with bases and shore establishments. Operations feature prominently, the allied and enemy navies compared, and specimen battles employed to explain fighting tactics. All these aspects changed and developed hugely over the great span of the Roman empire but this fascinating book brings this complex story together in one brilliant volume.

Turkey Blames Coup Attempt On Group Led By U.S.-Based Cleric

Although it is still unclear who is responsible for Friday’s failed coup attempt against the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish officials have placed blame on members of the Gülen movement, a religious and social group that the government has accused in the past of endeavoring to establish a “parallel state” inside of Turkey.

This presents a potential rift between Ankara and Washington, as Fethullah Gülen, the Sunni cleric who heads the group, has lived in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999.

Erdogan, whose alliance with the Gülen movement ruptured in 2013, demanded on Saturday that Washington hand over the cleric. Additional comments from Turkish officials suggested that Gülen’s residence in the U.S. could pose a threat to relations between the two countries.

“I do not think any country would support [Gülen], the leader of a terrorist organization. Countries standing by this person will not be a friend of Turkey,” Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said at a press conference in Ankara, in a clear reference to the U.S.

Gülen strongly denied any role in the uprising against Erdogan’s government. “As someone who suffered under multiple military coups during the past five decades, it is especially insulting to be accused of having any link to such an attempt. I categorically deny such accusations,” he said in a statement distributed by the Alliance for Shared Values, a U.S.-based nonprofit connected to the movement.

Speaking to reporters in Pennsylvania on Saturday, Gülen suggested the coup may have been staged, Reuters reported.

It’s an inconvenient time for a flare-up in the already strained U.S.-Turkey relationship. Cooperation between the two countries appeared to be on the rise after the Islamic State militant group attacked Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport last month, said Soner Cagaptay of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

“This is going to become a major sticking point in bilateral ties,” Cagaptay said. “Washington does not want a problem to arise right now, but it has risen.”

Erdogan, who himself was once allied with the religious Gülen movement, has waged a campaign to purge its members from all levels of government since their alliance broke down in 2013.

Washington has rebuffed past calls from Ankara to turn over Gülen, citing a lack of evidence that he was guilty of wrongdoing. It’s likely that Erdogan’s government will now step up the effort to present evidence against the cleric, putting the U.S. in a difficult position with an ally that currently hosts U.S. troops operating the air war against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Secretary of State John Kerry, speaking to reporters in Luxembourg, said the State Department had yet to receive an extradition request from Turkey for Gülen. The Associated Press later reported that Erdogan was demanding the U.S. turn over Gülen, although it’s not clear whether he has filed a formal request.

Kerry invited the Turkish government to present evidence of Gülen’s involvement in the coup attempt that “withstands scrutiny.” A State Department official declined to elaborate on how the U.S. would go about determining whether the evidence would warrant sending the cleric back to Turkey, where it is almost certain that he would face harsh punishment.

Turkey abolished the death penalty over a decade ago as a condition of ascension talks with the European Union, but Yildirim hinted on Saturday that the government was considering reinstating the policy.

“As is known, capital punishment has been abolished in the Turkish legal system. Today, our parliament will convene and we will discuss with other parties the additional measures or legal arrangements that should be put in place to prevent crazy attempts of this kind in the future,” the prime minister said, adding that those responsible for the uprising “are more despicable than the PKK terrorist organization.”

Because the Gülen movement is an opaque group whose members don’t identify themselves publicly, it is difficult to gauge the size of their presence in Turkey, much less within specific government or military institutions. A former member of the Turkish Foreign Service, Sinan Ulgen, estimated that Gülenists account for 1 to 2 percent of the population, but some reports estimate that it is closer to 10 percent.

There’s an “obvious risk” that the government will indiscriminately target people it suspects of being affiliated with the Gülen movement based on limited evidence, Ulgen said, referring to the precedent of the 2014 crackdown against the group.

“The government has not particularly followed the rule of law, believing that the ends justified the means,” he said.

Already, the government has arrested more than 2,800 people, though it is unclear what ties, if any, those people have to the Gülen movement or this week’s uprising.

Gülenist involvement in the attempted coup that began Friday night is, at this point, still only a matter of speculation. Experts are divided on whether the government’s allegations are likely to be true.

“The one institution that is quite impervious to the Gülen movement is the military,” Henri Barkey, director of the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, told The WorldPost on Friday.

But Ulgen had a different view.

“Given that there were already accounts that military was getting ready for large-scale purge within its ranks, I think it is fair to say that there is indeed Gülenist activity within the military ranks that potentially may have been part of this coup attempt,” said Ulgen, who is now a visiting scholar at Carnegie Europe. “I think it would be a fair assessment to state that Gülenists were at least part of it ― if not exclusively responsible.”

My Love Letter To You

2016-07-15-1468620026-5807673-1400415_10154064214148711_917411793151883215_o.jpg

Thank you for the love letter. Thank you for the lengthy text message you wrote me from a space of total vulnerability. You hit send hoping for the best as your heart rested anxiously on your sleeve awaiting my text back. Thank you for the crumpled up piece of paper that you ran to give me on the beach, leaving your lifeguard tower abandoned for a split second so as to not miss the chance to ask me out. Thank you for the ride home from yoga. I know it took a lot of guts to ask me on a date just a breath before I closed the car door shut. Your cheeks were bright red as you grasped the steering wheel. But you did it, you faced your fear and made the ask.

I may have turned you down but I didn’t ignore you and I was polite, gracious, and compassionate in my response. I realize that it’s not what you were hoping to hear but I thanked you. I thanked for your sincerity and I meant it when I said that I was humbled by the effort. I see how you show up for love and it’s the same I see in me. Believe me when I say that I know how you feel.

There was the time that I went to the other side of the country to surprise you at your concert, palms sweaty in the back of the venue as I awaited the imminent moment that I’d say, “Hi! I came to see you because I care, I’ve missed you and I really like you.” Remember when I sent you that tiny box with a gemstone in it to protect you on your travels? Or what about when I left you a flower under your windshield wiper?

I’m the not-so-secret admirer just like you.

Whenever my romantic actions result in a “turn down” I don’t let it get me down. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be bold and tear down any walls of fear that existed around being rejected. I know I did the right thing by stepping forward and diving into it.
Disappointment can last a minute but regret can last a lifetime.

When I receive your old-school love letter, your authentic compliment in line at Whole Foods, your poem and your nervous ask, know that I see and understand you. I may not say “yes” but I’ll tell you thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. It’s easy to hide behind technology as we explore our hearts that are seeking to connect but It’s not easy to show up in person. If we desire something or someone, it’s our actions that will propel us to a result. Some of the most treasured words to me are those spoken by Mahatma Gandhi,

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

Thank you for the love letter, the art you made me, the authentic compliment, and for asking a stranger to dinner. I hope that you’ll receive this love letter back to you:

Dear Fellow Romantic,

Please keep showing up for life like you’ve been. Don’t let a “no” or even silence jade you. It’s you who sees the rose and it’s you who gets to smell her enchanting aroma. With eyes wide open continue to see, feel and express your deep experience of the world because that will inspire others to dive into their fears instead of letting fear block destiny. The more you show up for life in full expression of your hopes and dreams, the more that life will become your dream come true. It’s the romantics that see the glass half full. So please, beautiful soul, never become jaded. Always write love letters and always be able to receive them with grace, compassion, and a warm thank you.

With Love,
Alicia

5 Reasons We Need To Introduce Meditation Into Schools

When a child goes to school there is a lot that we teach them.

At first, we want them to learn to master reading, writing, and some basic arithmetic. Later, as their analytical skills develop we give them other areas; maybe geography, history, economics and social studies.

Depending on the school they go to, they may also be exposed to more creative activities such as art and music.

These skills, while useful, aren’t what we would call hard life skills. In fact, most of them aren’t very useful once we enter the ‘real world.’ This is particularly relevant given that the world is changing so rapidly.

But there is one skill that we could teach our children that would help them in all areas of their lives.

It would help them develop more emotional intelligence, cognitive acuity, compassion, and confidence.

This skill would strengthen their immune systems, increase their willpower and improve their ability to make difficult decisions under pressure. All in all, it would make them happier individuals and allow them to better deal with the stresses of technology and modern life.

So what is it?

Meditation.

Meditation is the antidote to the aspects of modernity that have become pathological.

This pathology is manifesting itself as an inability to look at ourselves openly and honestly. We are conditioned to look for distractions in the form of social media, movies, Netflix, and junk food.

As human beings, it is natural that we should fall into the trap of listening to our ego, but what modern society unfortunately does is amplify that voice. We’re seeing a few ways in which children are being impacted by this change.

But meditation can help us solve alleviate these issues whilst at the same time allowing us to develop some of our greatest human strengths.

Here are 5 reasons we need to introduce meditation to schools:

It can help reduce symptoms of ADHD and Autism.

The causes of Autism are highly contested. However, the one thing that is clear is that autism is a stress response. Meditation can increase children’s resilience to stress and offer relief when it comes to the symptoms of autism.

With regards to ADHD, diagnoses have skyrocketed in recent years and it serves everyone involved to look for a solution that doesn’t involve prescription medication. A number of studies, including on out of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), found that only 8 weeks of mindfulness meditation training was incredibly beneficial to both adolescents and adults suffering from ADHD.

Imagine how much 8 years could help!

For those that don’t suffer from ADHD, meditation is also hugely beneficial to general concentration.

It can combat Depression and Anxiety.

There are dozens, if not hundreds of studies demonstrating the benefits of meditation on depression and anxiety. Goyal & Singh et al. for example, studied the effects of mindfulness meditation on 3515 participants, adding to the increasing body of evidence that it can decrease depression and anxiety.

This is a particular problem amongst young people these days who have to deal with novel issues such as cyber-bullying and body image issues related to social media exposure.

It improves creativity

Schools and educational programs have been widely accused of diminishing creativity, so any effort to stimulate it would be beneficial.

One study that looked at 5 measures of creativity saw a significant increase in those that meditated over a 6-month period.

It improves emotional intelligence and compassion

We now know that both emotional intelligence and compassion aren’t inherent traits, they’re skills that need to be developed and nurtured over time. Studies have shown that meditation can play a fundamental role in this process, improving our emotional intelligence and expanding our capacity for compassion.

It improves learning

This probably seems like the most obvious benefit for schools to consider. A study at George Mason University looked at students who attended a lecture after meditating and found that even with a short meditation they were able to retain the information better. Meditation also serves as an accurate predictor of who will pass and fail.

If meditation became part of the school curriculum it could have deep benefits not just for our children but for the future of our planet.

Some of the most profound benefits of the practice only come after a very long-term practice of 20 or more years. Some studies have found super fast cognitive functioning, the ability to repress the startle response, the slowing down of neurodegenerative diseases

However, children who start at 6 years old can have 12 years meditation experience before they leave school. This means by the time they enter the workforce and start having influence in positions of authority, they already have a degree of emotional maturity usually reserved for someone far beyond their years.

Whether they’re an old favorite or you are interested in trying something new, our Brazil nuts make a tasty treat that’s good for the palate, the planet, and you! Brazil nuts are technically seeds, since the meat of the nut separates from the shell when split. They grow only in the Amazon rainforest, where only one species of bee is able to pollinate the trees due to the coiled hood and complexity of the flower. The trees can reach 100 to 150 feet in height, with trunks from 3 to 6.5 feet in diameter, making them among the largest trees in the Amazon. Organic Brazil nuts are an excellent source of magnesium, thiamine, and selenium. Roasted and unsalted 8 oz. (225 g) USDA certified organic Made in and fairly traded from Peru Shop Green!
